I had to completely separate the food bowl and the water bowl because my dog would get a big mouthful of water and then drift over the food bowl as it all dribbles out. Then she refuses to eat the soggy kibble.

I have to get like three different placemats for my dog over his life because he'd slop water all over, I'd get a placemat big enough to cover his splashzone, then he'd just... Splash more, necessitating a bigger mat

Fucker still barfed up a stomachful of cicada corpses at least three times. He was so happy.

There are dog water bowls that have a float in them with a hole in the middle so the dog can only lap at a tiny bit of water at a time and not get it everywhere. My dog still finds a way to get water on the floor though but it's definitely better now that I have one. This is the one I have: https://www.amazon.com/UPSKY-Feeder-No-Slip-Dispenser-Drinking/dp/B07J4PJNZF/ref=sr_1_1 Caveat: The float is hollow and the 2 halves of the mold are not sealed very well so water will get inside. This means the float will become waterlogged and sink to the bottom, defeating the purpose of the bowl. Worse is that this will encourage the growth of mold. What I did to fix this was go along the edge with a cigarette lighter and melt/weld the seam shut and it no longer takes on water.
