OHMSS is one of my favourite pieces of music ever let alone favourite Bond theme. Smith’s whiny voice really grates on me. You know my name is the only modern era theme I actually like.

While I am used to the Quantum hate, its my favorite of the Craig bonds even if I don't think its the best. It keeps the brutality of bonds personality, while directly showing him the consequences. Saying that, it is also a bit lighter than the rest of his bond films, which I feel they get their head up their asses and are too serious. I also didn't mind the plot of gonna get rich of loving the poor, as opposed to i hate you cause we are family or going to destroy the world.

Casino Royale undid about 10 years of extremely mediocre films (excluding Goldeneye obviously) in the first 10 minutes of the movie. The gun barrel blending into the scene, Bond was actually doing hitman poo poo and the opening credits were fun to watch. It’s a complete whiplash after Die Another Day. As someone who thought the franchise was toast after Brosnan, CR is the most fun I’ve had watching a Bond movie in a theater. e: it’s kinda funny considering the best movies are partial reboots with new actors (The Living Daylights, Goldeneye and Casino Royale). Casino Royale was needed but the only real problem I have with the Brosnan movies is Die Another Day. You sit me down in front of Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World is Not Enough and I'll have a good time.

I honestly don't know if I like it or Goldeneye more. Pryce is delightful, Yeoh will never be surpassed as one of those "looks like Bond has met his match... but it's a female?!" characters, the score is fantastic, it's got one of the best car sequences ever (including the Backseat Driver track on the score which rules and IIRC has been taught to students sometimes as a masterclass in action movie scoring), the plot is fresh and timely and campy, the intro is pure gold, I could go on but yeah I think it's great. There are isolated elements of Tomorrow and World that are good. I like the Dr Kaufman scene quite a bit, for instance. But by the time Die Another Day tanked the franchise, Craig Bond was exactly what I wanted. And unlike for a lot of people, I didn’t hate Quantum. It wasn’t Casino Royale, but I enjoyed it for the reasons the other poster above did.

I just find Craig Bond to be a weird missed opportunity because of how they have him perfectly set up after Casino Royale. He's a new 00, just had this traumatic loss that cements his character, and he's ready to be in his prime as the classic Bond. But instead of doing that they immediately skip ahead to where he's all bitter and washed up, which for me was a mistake.

Ironically the Craig video games ended up pushing this interpretation by complete accident: the Goldeneye remake and the godawful 007 Legends essentially had you play through classic Bond movies as Craig, essentially implying he did all those things* * Never mind inconsistencies in Legends like Felix Leiter inexplicably being a white guy again in Goldfinger, and the Blofeld amalgam...

Honestly the Brosnan era is starting to age pretty well There's been enough said about Goldeneye, it's obviously great Tomorrow Never Dies always ruled and the contemporary criticisms that Carver was too over the top and obviously evil in his public mannerisms go right out the window in 2023 as we've seen the world's richest man acting like an especially dumb bond villain and shrinking into a corncob on a daily basis The World is Not Enough is maybe the worst of the bunch for me? It has some good moments and some of the best acting of the Brosnan era (Denise Richards aside) but I felt a little bored by it on my last watch and it's the least memorable of the bunch. Not a bad Bond movie by any stretch, though I used to hate Die Another Day but now that it's over 20 years old it's a vintage, cozy kind of bad that makes it just as fun as Diamonds Are Forever. I have a blast watching this dumb as gently caress movie now Brosnan having a 4/4 hit rate on movies I'd actually want to sit down and watch leaves him with one of the best hit rates of the entire series

I recall really liking TWINE in the past, and enjoying it more overall than TND. Obviously Richards is not as charismatic as Yeoh, and individual sequences in TND are better than what is in TWINE (the Kaufman sequence particularly) but I like the various twists and double-blinds that it throws in its plot. It has Bond being a dumbass, human and vulnerable in varied ways that carry through the story. I should re-watch them at some point. I did my last rewatch before Spectre.

Roger Spottiswoode had never directed a big action movie before; he was known for directing comedies. Michael Apted did documentaries and biopics. And Lee Tamahori? Character dramas. Just some very strange choices made during that era, almost as odd as Marc Forster getting the Quantum of Solace gig.

Tomorrow Never Dies is pretty good, thinking back on it. Carver is extremely prescient and a good fit for a post-USSR Bond villain. TWINE never really clicked with me, I think Bond straight up murdering Elektra was really ham fisted. It might give his character an edge but it was just awkward. The boat chase at the beginning is ridiculous to a point I could not take it seriously. The positives are Robbie Coltrane returning and Goldie being one of his henchmen. e: I will agree that taking things seriously in a Bond movie is setting yourself up for disappointment but the TWINE boat chase felt like something from the Moore era. The big problem with Quantum is the absolutely godawful editing that makes most of the action almost completely incomprehensible. The movie itself is full of great elements when you can actually see what's happening.

I wrote a huge analysis on TWINE in the last thread* and basically stockholmed myself into liking it, I think it's very clever in many ways but those details don't really add up to an overall super enjoyable movie. My biggest criticism of it is actually that the action scenes aren't very good; a lot of them feel weightless and awkward and go on for too long, deflating tension. I never liked TND and even rewatches didn't endear me to it, I can't really put my finger on why, it just seems flat to me, once again individual scenes aside. *I'm awful at plugging myself and also didn't get that much resonance last time, so please if you're interested tell me and I'll try to find them, but also I don't have archives lol Gervasius posted:TWINE also has the honor of worst Bond pun ever. That's probably not a coincidence; semi-reboots to reinvigorate a franchise are when you want to actually put in the effort after having coasted for too long with mediocrity and/or ill-advised trend-chasing. So you get both a back-to-basics approach to the franchise while also giving thought to what actually works in the current era, but risk-averse enough to not do anything too outlandish or ill-advised to try to compete with whatever the kids are into these days.

There's a coldness to his Bond, which I think you need, that I think starts to show itself in Tomorrow Never Dies that wasn't really there in Goldeneye.
