Maybe there really isn't combinatory value to be had there.

I feel there are bad seasons/episodes that still had enough hangers-on that many Simpsons fans would still get the references even if the source material was not good. The jockey episode was one of those. That same season produced “stupid sexy Flanders”, for what it’s worth.
