obvs twitter is filled with that stuff too (and musk himself is all over it) but pivoting the thing made by the facebook/instagram guys as the woke one is pretty absurd

That's kinda the issue, I'm really passive in my social media curation. On Twitter the people I followed were a couple low-mid tier streamers/speedrunners, a comedian, two sites that did admin through Twitter (they've now changed their backends), and a Rabbi who spent a lot of her time championing Progressive causes and dunking on bigots. Then the algorithm just did its work and things would drift into my attention and if I engaged they stayed there. I have no idea what sorts of hashtags I want to pull out of that now that I'm doing the work myself.

I had a Twitter account for something like 10 years before I started engaging with any of it, I don't really mind if Mastadon takes 10 more.

The rub is that someone is going to have to do the work of moderating the space. Unless social media platforms actually do something to curb nazi bullshit (which we all know zuck and most wont because nazis will croon "FREEZEPEACH" until they get thier way) nazis will be all over every new social media platform like flies on fresh meat.

Its thier MO now, use every available platform to spread vile poo poo as long as they can get away with it.

The old guard might say they would never use *insert platform here* because its not as "free" as others and they might be right, but that just leaves organic small time nazis to grow into new steven crowders and catturds.

My twitter (mostly podcast people) is basically a ghost town, but I can’t really tell if there’s a migration to Threads because I just keep seeing stupid grindset posts and Paris Hilton. I’ve missed posts my actual friends have made, that I’ve seen by clicking their profile.

I think Bluesky was picking up some steam with those tech/news types before, but I never got an invite so they might’ve lost their window.

It seems like people are keeping a foot in each - I’ve seen a bunch of reporters, sports media, etc over there but they’re definitely posting to both (and probably Bluesky too)

The algorithm makes your feed kinda like drinking from a fire hose at first, but after following a few people, blocking a few more, and throwing out a few likes and replies it’s down to either people I follow or accounts that I have some interest in.

It’s hard to tell how seriously people are taking it, but there’s definitely a “thank god Elon isn’t here” vibe to things right now. Whether that wears off and usage drops off of a cliff is anyone’s guess.

So far a lot of the people I followed on Instagram seem to have moved over. Of course, the bulk of stuff I followed on IG was either miniature painting/wargaming, 3D printing, pro rasslin', or niche music stuff like synthwave or noise rock, so most of those people were probably hopping over to Threads because Twitter became increasingly useless to them (unless they were willing to buy a blue checkmark and/or deal with countless racist chuds, anyways).

Also, anecdotal and all, but thus far I've seen a lot of posts in my feed saying something like "it's so nice to not see a zillion posts from Nazis like you had to on Elon's site, at least for now anyways". Like when someone posted the story about Rudy Giuliani being recommended for disbarment, the bulk of comments were along the lines of "about loving time" instead of "How could they do this to ARE MAYOR, a REAL PATRIOT!!!1!"

I've not had a twitter ever, didn't auto follow anyone from my instagram when I made a threads account (meaning I had zero people I was following) and the thing had no idea what I wanted to see. Sports stuff right off the bat, ok fine but I don't sports, not even a little bit. Basketball and MLB and all that. Mixed in that was hiphop stuff, fashion and R&B and rap music things of which is fine I guess but certainly not my jam. A whole heap of blue checkmark people that I have no idea who they are. Makeup, fashion icons, quite literally stuff I have absolutely zero interest in. I thought facebook had dibs on everyone! I saw absolutely zero anti trans or hate or conservative anything, and I am a cis white dude in Florida that's almost 40 years old :c00l:

Blocking every brand and anyone with a blue checkmark I don't recognize has shifted everything to something that is better, but I've landed on Japanese photography. It seems like a bunch of people shitposting and that's pretty neat. Still nothing hateful or disrespectful at all, actually.
