Rickie back to winning. I disliked him and the way they marketed the young players when he first came up, but he's seemed likeable for a couple of years now.

Yeah good for Rickie. He had very few reasons not to not cash a (massive, I imagine) LIV check or even just retire after losing his game. That he went out there and battled and found it again is pretty awesome.

Fixed my swing on the range yesterday enough to get to shoot 92 over 18, closer to my long term norm. I seem to hit the ball straighter, further, more reliably when I have my hands slightly further apart in almost a hockey grip. I don’t know if it’s related to my body geometry or what, it just seems to help me avoid coming over the top so much.

We played a 3 hour round of 18 at a Par 3 course today, when I got there two old retirees were practicing on the putting green, and were still there when we left

Also there was like an 8 year old there playing all by himself and the pro shop guy said he comes like 5 days a week by himself and always stops into the clubhouse with his score card to ask him if he beat the course record. I saw him tee off on the only 4-par hole and he could nail a driver for a little kid, that’s for sure

From what the pro shop guy said, he doesn’t want to know what the record is, he just wants him to look at his score and say yes or no

But I did see him sink a long birdie putt on 18 while we were waiting on 11 and he took off his hat and was running around fist pumping and super amped up, so maybe!

Ireland golf update: Played last week at Killarney Golf Club's Killeen course. Weather was in the 50s, misting and some light rain at times, but good lord was it the most beautiful course I've ever played at. Saw lots of rabbits, and both red and sika dear (one of which wouldn't leave the green as I was trying to chip). Brutal day score-wise (110 with about two mulligans per nine), and one of the most expensive rounds - greens fees, cart rental, club rental, a bag of six random balls - but I had an absolute blast.

Looks amazing (and cute deer)! I would love to travel for golf but from where I am currently, playing once a week at my local muni, it feels almost unattainable.

I guess part of the problem is that I have no overlap in the middle of my personal Venn diagram of “people who would go on vacation with me” and “people who love playing golf” :sigh:

Do you all tend to go on trips where golf is the main draw, or just find places to play near an area that you are traveling to for other reasons?

This was a bit unique, in that the point of the trip was originally my mom's dream trip, then my sister was going to get married there, THEN the engagement fell apart but we still went. My wife jumped on the grenade that is my mom's neuroticism/"I must be included in everything" and I went by myself while they had a late breakfast and went for a walk. Booked the first tee time that day, showed up early and got a quick start, and finished in 2:56.

I've only done two golf-specific trips: one to visit home and golf with my one of my brothers, and my trip to Phoenix/Scottsdale for a birthday trip with my dad.

One thing my dad does is always travel with a small bag that contains a few balls, a few tees, a marker and a glove, and if he finds a good course he'll book it and play. His personal rule is if he plans to play at least two rounds, he'll travel with his clubs. After missing out on golfing at Punta Espada with my dad, I now always travel with that little bag

Spent some time on the range and got my drive figured out to the point where I hit multiple >=300 yard drives into the fairway on course. Unfortunately, I was also therefore ending up in no mans land a lot, and although my short game within 20 feet is pretty good, it turns out I don't have a feel or a club for the 60-30 yard range. That and a few bad bounces (tough course, Owl's Nest up in central NH) got me up to 94 but feeling better about it if I can just dial in that mid-wedge game (or make smarter club selections off the tee).

The one casualty of my driver oddly enough seems to be my driving iron (2 hybrid from Ping). Couldn't hit it at all, even though my driver was cooking and my irons were mostly fine.

Had my irons fitting session today and man it’s really demoralizing to find out the Cobra hybrid irons for seniors are what is best suited for you (I’m 39). Like I know I’m pretty poo poo, but I didn’t think I was underperforming in nearly every single measurable category. :(

I couldn’t bring myself to take them though and settled for the Callaway Big Bertha. I was hopeful with the Cobra Aerojet, those clubs absolutely SEND balls but my dispersion on them was so high I couldn’t justify the distance.

In high school my one teammate had a Nike sq driver or whatever it was called - giant square one. I cared he was hitting it because it made the loudest most horrific sound I’ve ever heard a driver make. I think that’s probably the loudest club I’ve heard.

Yeah it’s a very unique (and horrible) sound. There’s a guy in one of the leagues that plays the opposite nine from my Tuesday league and I usually hear it once or twice and laugh every time.

I’ve come pretty close to pulling the trigger on some Takomo irons a few times now. I have a set of Mizunos that are only a year and a half old that I typically like but the longer irons are not very forgiving so I’m looking at going for something like the 101T (basically TM P790) but then I’d probably have to deal with gapping issues at either end of the set. I know one guy that has the 101s and really likes them and their prices are amazing.

I played in the wettest conditions on Monday right after a morning of rain, and it had been raining a couple days so the rough was extra long. Wasn’t fun playing on the greens (which were hard as gently caress for around here) but I had a great time chunking the gently caress out of poo poo with my 4 iron out of the rough even if I was losing 10-20 yards that would normally be there. Was also brutal that nothing rolled, drives would just die with a little splash.

Considering buying a new driver. I’ve been using this Cleveland driver with an extra stiff shaft for a while. Never really used to pay attention to this stuff but I suspect I’ve lost some swing speed as I age. I can still dial it up and knock the stuffing out of the ball but it’s getting tougher to do it all the time and maintain good contact. Edit: and to complete my thought, I suspect my driver is hurting me when I can’t maintain a high swing speed based on what I’ve read. But I also replaced a putter I’d used for a decade and my putting is shittier than before so maybe the devil you know is better

I’ve had my clubs 15 years, but only really played one game a year.

Decided last month to try and get better at golf, as I wasn’t going to get better playing Dota2.

Think I’ve played 11 rounds of nine holes, went to the range 3 times and got a lesson booked next week.

So I guess you could say I’m still a beginner.

Ah, but those glimmers. Nothing like it.

Edit: Reminder that the U.S. Women's Open is at Pebble this week, and so far it's a good tough course. The poa is already a problem. Amateurs are for some reason going low. World #1 hit a ball further offline left than you ever have. Drone porn out the whazoo.

It's also Michele Wie West's final tournament, so the end of an era of incredible highs and lows.

Unlike most women's tournaments we have both featured groups livestreamed on UsWomensOpen.com and 3-9pm EST on-network coverage this weekend on NBC. I really like women's golf but without cable or Peacock subscriptions or whatever it's nearly impossible, so it's cool to see some primetime golf this weekend at an iconic course.

So far this year I've been taking an abbreviated swing with my driver and I've lost a bit of club head speed (~103 mph down from 108-110 a year or two ago) but I've been pretty darn consistent with a 10-20 yard fade and I still have plenty of distance on the courses I play. This video has got me really tempted to spend a few sessions practicing and seeing if I can creep back up a bit with the speed while maintaining the consistent shape. We shall see I guess.

Pebble is fighting back this afternoon. Right now it's like 55* with a 10-20 MPH wind, which seems like what we'll see the rest of the weekend, and the greens sound rock hard. Rose was T24 when she finished 4-5 hours ago and is now up to T12. Nelly is playing well this afternoon, one of the few afternoon players under par and making up a ton of distance.

One of the amateurs in the field who's likely to miss the cut by only 1 has been out with the featured groups on the other side of her play which is really cool. Couldn't ask for more up to date detail on how things are playing out there.

For me, Golf isn't about being better than another poster, or beating my father on the course (he is good for low 80s), but rather improvement over time based on how much effort you put into the improvement. I might play once every two weeks, I'm thrilled with my the other day. It was great for me.

Now it's can I avoid the duffs/miss hits and get another ar or two per nine holes.
