Yeah, I couldn't stand Goldeneye for a while because he was just Remington Steele with a touch of Roger Moore, which was just following Timothy Dalton, which was just excellent. Took Tomorrow Never Dies for me to retroactively accept him.

However groanworthy it is to name a Bond girl something just so a sexual joke can be made about it is still better than the Bond girls who are given outright sexual names to begin with.

Bond also gets in a pretty decent line in TWINE with this:

quote:

James Bond:
I need to know who's in charge here.

Dr. Christmas Jones:
That would be me, Dr. Christmas Jones and I don't want to hear any jokes.

James Bond:
I don't know any doctor jokes.

I gave it a pass cuz at that time we'd already been thrown the curve of Elektra not being the de facto "Bond girl" of the movie and instead being the villain behind everything, so in my mind the (novel, at the time) twist led to Bond causing the death of another woman but this time it was by his own hands.

plus as everyone else said the Christmas pun is so bad it retroactively wiped out like five movies' worth of one liners

Hell, gently caress it why not rank the movies.

1. Casino Royale
2. Goldeneye
3. The Living Daylights
4. Skyfall
5. License To Kill
6. OHMSS

Honorable mention to Tomorrow Never Dies. I’ve watch all of them recently and I just have an aversion to Moore and Connery, outside of maybe Goldfinger.

I'm sure this is super obvious to everyone, but I just realized all the actors have done a different number of films (counting Eon only, not NSNA):

Moore: 7, Connery: 6, Craig: 5, Brosnan: 4, Dalton: 2, Lazenby: 1.

So, whoever they get next should sign a 3 picture deal.

Goldfinger over From Russia With Love?

I'm curious with your list because the three most alike are probably From Russia With Love, License to Kill, and Living Daylights.

15.Tomorrow Never Dies
It becomes more relevant every day doesn't it.
14. Quantum of Solace
The loosest the franchise ever got on account of circumstances. Kind like it like that. It's like Cruises character from Collateral directed a film.
13. Live and Let Die
Absurd in a great way.
12.TWINE
Criminally underrated. The final fight and some of the gadgetry was too goofy but Elektra King as the villain was perfect. I even love how she was going after M not Bond. The final punchline is so loving dumb it becomes hilarious.
11. Dr. No
Practical spying, beautiful location, a cool base. The film feels half way to a perfect bond Film and it was the first released. And as a bonus it doesn't step on any of the landmines that the rest of the franchise does.
10. Goldfinger
It's good, but I don't get the legendary status. Oddjob is my boy though. I'd let him hench for me anytime.
9.You Only Live Twice
Turning Connery Japanese is so absurd it gets a hearty laugh. Tiger Tanakas dubber owns super hard. We get the classic volcano base, love that helicopter shot as the men are chasing him on the roof of the building. Maybe the best opening scene in bond?
8.For Your Eyes Only
God I wish Moore had more films like this and less goofy poo poo. Him kicking that car off the cliff was ice cold.
7.Casino Royale
Mads is one of the best villains wasted in a movie that's half Bourne half bad poker. Eva Green saves the film, and then dooms it by dragging it out for five endings. Worse in retrospect after everything it set up ended up being so lame.
6.Goldeneye
Sean Beans character remains the best Bond but Bad in the franchise. Especially over jokerlites like Silva.
5.License to Kill
Man deserved another film
4.Thunderball
I'm like the only person who loves this movie. I love largo, Fiona Volpe is the first time the seductress actively worked VS bond. Domino is one of the hottest bond girls. The scene with Bond fleeing Mardis Gras is suitably tense and présages some of the more Interesting scenes we get in OHMSS
3.Living Daylights
Would be above Russia of the last act was slightly shorter. Skiing on the cello case remains one of the best gags on the series despite being in one of the most grounded films.
2.From Russia with Love
The perfect classic bond. Beautiful women, semi realistic spying, exotic locales.
1.OHMSS
Best action in the assault on the compound. Blofeld and Tracy are absolutely perfect, incredibly dynamic all the way through. Much more grounded than the films had gotten

I'm still genuinely impressed with how modern a lot of OHMSS feels between the editing, the humor, the bleak ending with meaningful continuity, the characters, and especially the action. That assault on the compound feels like it's from a 90s John Woo movie done in 1969.

While bond always had the one liners, this scene in particular feels like it's the progenitor for Schwarzenegger's one liners in response to absurdly violent things happening to people. The first time I saw this I had to pause the movie because I was laughing too hard, I really didn't expect a movie this old to do something that'd be more at home in a tongue-in-cheek 80s hyper violence flick like Commando or Robocop.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiQK8dLXy5E

Peter Hunt was a visionary for what action movies would be 25 years later and it's nice to see OHMSS get the respect it deserves these days instead of being regarded off-hand as that "bad one the one-and-done guy did"

TWINE also had a pretty good FPS game for the N64 that got overshadowed by Goldeneye. It was a pretty solid game and not a lot of people talk about it now.

I had that game. It was OK, but Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were far better games.

Catching up a bit on the conversation over the past few pages: Tomorrow Never Dies is underrated. It's not as good as Goldeneye but it's better than both TWINE and Die Another Day. Elliot Carver is what Elon Musk wants to be but is too much of a dumb dickhead to pull off.

I wouldn't say that Connery has a perfect record for Bond themes, because Thunderball exists. It's Tom Jones belting out weird sycophantic lyrics about how tough and mighty Bond is; such a terrible song.

Dalton is a great Bond and extremely underrated by a lot of fans. I'm always up for a good revenge story and License To Kill delivers. I've always liked the opening where the wedding march segues perfectly into the theme song.

It’d be the villain in the film, vs the Queen of England and the UK Parliament.

Came up before that Brosnan is considered to have gotten better at playing Bond the worse the movies got.

I think he's just in one of those niches where he's cast in roles based on his looks, accent and screen presence but don't actually give him anything to work with.

I don't think so. If you watch Connery's films again, he does a good job of conveying little moments of doubt or amusement or surprise and it seems natural. Timothy Dalton was also a good actor in a very different way. Being able to act improves the movies so much that relying on someone as obvious as Moore or as unsubtle as Lazenby does a lot of harm.

I disagree, having good acting always helps. Go watch the diner scene from L.A. Takedown, the TV Movie version of Heat. Same script, same director, but without DeNiro and Pacino the scene is a total wet noodle. Granted, Brosnan is way better that those two, he's fine a lot of the time but he often tries to do too much and it's hard for me to ignore the *ACTING*. This scene of him getting tortured is a perfect example.
