The ‘niche in my region’ subreddit is going to be 1000x bigger than any regional content in a general niche forum covering the whole world. Reddit subs for some things are/were just 1000x more active than any similar forum.

some of the biggest internet services are such ubiquitous communication tools. some lovely company won the race XX years ago and becomes the main place for that type of communication, but in their quest to make money from it they ruin it. maybe this sort of poo poo isn't profitable and doesn't need to be. it serves a great utility to people, so it should probably just be a utility. it was especially silly when we had that joke president using twitter as their main form of communication with the public. just make techbro tax, then fund a goddamn public municipal twitter/youtube/ig/reddit. worst case scenario use .00001 of the defense budget to fund them for a thousand years.

Back in the AOL days it was super easy to report people for Terms of Service violations and AOL took it super seriously. Many people made it their MO to bait people into saying things that could be reported, and after too many TOS violations I think your account would be shut down. Ironically if you wanted to cancel AOL that was the easiest way. If you wanted to just stop subscribing it'd take hours fighting their retention team, but just make a bunch of barely offensive message board posts and you'd be gone for good very quickly!

Heath posted:I mean this is kind of what I assumed it was based on the name alone but people are talking like there is valuable insight buried in there somewhere so I'm curious what that is None of this answers your question because the answer is: nothing. There's nothing insightful. At one point I tried to find value in it, and other writing subreddits, but I don't think there's any actual value to be found in any of them other beyond "a place that encourages people to write". The most immediate thing that struck me as terrible about it is that they claim to be for creatives of all types, like Artists, game developers, etc. But they literally do not allow any submission that is not accompanied by a fiction piece. I tried posting some art of some sci-fi landscapes I made for a game I was working on, with some minor commentary on how they were interlinked and the world they were part of etc. and they got deleted with a message not to repost them unless I also wrote and provided a short fiction piece backstory for them. The next thing that sucks is very hard to define or describe but the entire subreddit has one shared 'voice', they all sound like the same exact teenage writer obsessed with victorian england, ancient egypt, steampunk, and magic, and they want to combine them all. They all use the same naming schemes for their characters and cultures and regions. A post pops up that gets a ton of upvotes and goes to the front page, and then whatever trope it was about gets absorbed into the writing of everyone from the worldbuilding sub. They almost cherish their ability to create entire worlds without using a single original idea. There are constant posts that are like "Hey I decided my world should have ghosts and the main character should have the ability to talk to ghosts and so they get recruited by a big secret agency, but I need help - I can't think of any reason why ghosts would exist, or what the secret agency would do with them, or why my protagonist got the power. Ideas???" where they're just clearly uninterested in the idea of actually doing any world building or creating something of their own and the comments are nothing but people brain-barfing about how that worked for the characters/secret agency/ghosts in their world. Also there's the poor quality of the content there but upon looking at it/reading it I'm pretty sure it's mostly by tweens so that's excusable I guess. And the last bit I guess is that there's very little discussion of worldbuilding or how to build worlds, it's entirely people showing off their embarrassingly-bad fiction worlds or asking questions like "WHY ARE NECROMANCERS EVIL IN YOUR WORLD?" or "WHAT'S THE EQUIVALENT OF ANCIENT EGYPT IN YOUR WORLD?" Anyway overall my problem with it is that it's full of bad content and bad advice, anyone with unique or cool ideas isn't going to post them there because they will get stolen and absorbed by the community, and also because you're not allowed to post teasers or sneak peaks of your material, you have to post it all so that they can absorb it and use your ideas in their dime-a-dozen stories. It's like it's designed from the ground up to keep anyone who's serious about it away. I posted something in a critique thread in /r/writers once and the only things anyone said were things like "I don't know what [word] means." or "whoaaaaa this went over my head lol" or "i think its good!", it was like opening your writing up to Youtube comments. It's like sitting in on a Middle School Fiction Writers club workshop - it's cool that it exists for them and maybe you want to help them out with some critiques but serious writers have nothing to gain from it. Most of this applies to places like /r/writingprompts too I suppose. They're good for complete amateurs getting started but these places should not be engagement-driven communities designed to keep people in the community, reinforcing the bad parts of their work because no one is around for serious critiques, they get invested in the community and stick to all their bad habits instead of growing as a writer. deep dish peat moss fucked around with this message at 03:45 on Jul 10, 2023 |

"Just scroll past the bad posts and ignore the posters you can't stand"? Yeah, it turns out you can do that on Reddit too. I don't get something out of reading the sub every time (though I also only read it every few days), but there's usually a few people who have thought about subjects that come up in my project in a different way than I have. Even if their writing sucks rear end, it's still a different frame of reference to think from and draw on. I've had some cornerstones come from different handlings of subjects that I wouldn't have thought of on my own. I'm not going to claim to be a good writer, I'm not. I'm pretty trash at writing actually. I'm sure a professional or even a mildly competent writer would look down their nose at the whole approach. But it brings me joy most of the time, and unlike "fishing for sick dunks on a dead comedy forum" it's a hobby that doesn't come at anyone else's expense.

You have to believe that most of reddit is kids writing for each other. Its very predictable and can be criticized for many reasons (too insular, self-referential, derivative). But kids have to start somewhere. Sidenote: I don't read it. Reddit clogs up my timeline with subs I don't care about because I accidentially clicked something. Boy do the mods make themselves the least sympathetic people. No wonder the boycott didn't work.
