if you take away easy and plentiful access to parking, then you are deliberately discriminating against those who need it most: families with young children, the elderly, small business owners, and the disabled

Ensign Expendable posted:I saw quite a lot of those tiny FIAT 500s in the UK, so I wanted to look up how much they would cost in Canada. It seems that the only Fiat you can buy in Canada is the 500X, which is the bloated 'subcompact crossover' (a segment that surely shouldn't exist?) spin-off of the 500. And the site pushes you towards the Dodge, Jeep and Ram websites so FCA can try and sell you a pick-up truck or an off-roader. My work gave me a 500 Hybrid now my role (unfortunately) requires independent travel and it's actually pretty great as being the least amount of functional car you can get away with in the modern world. It's really only a two-seater (it has back seats but they're pretty cramped and the hybrid battery is mounted where anyone in the back would have to put their feet - awesome design work, Fiat!). A 999cc three-pot engine and it does 70+mpg in a steady cruise and averages about 55mpg. It's only 7.5ft long and weighs under a ton, and it's chubby, comes in pastel colours and has headlamps styled to look like they have eyelashes, so it's a nice counter to some steroidal crossover. Unfortunately Fiat can't help itself and they also sell the 500X, the 600e (a mid-size SUV) and the Tipo Cross (the crossover version of a model that is available as a sedan, wagon or hatchback elsewhere) here. But mostly they sell the 500 and the Panda (same car in a non-retro utilitarian body) by the bucketload. Which makes Ford's decision to stop selling the Fiesta because it was now 'only' the sixth-best selling car in the country all the more stupid. They pulled the plug on the Mondeo (mid-size ordinary sedan) a couple of years ago, have just killed the Fiesta and have announced that they won't replace the Focus when that platform reaches the end of its planned life. It'll all be crossovers, SUVs and electric crossovers and SUVs. This is apparently because that's what the market wants now...except that Ford et.al. have been busy spending the past 20-odd years putting great effort and money into telling people that that's what they want. Because they can't be bothered to sell normal cars at a slightly smaller profit margin.

I store my bicycles in my apartment, pretty hosed up that all these motorists lacked the forward thinking to figure out a place to store their things that isn't right out in public. Genuinely though, even my friends with carbrains that bring up how all these bike lanes are making traffic worse admit that it's hosed how much public space is given over to free or subsidized storage for people's personal property.

It was completely eradicated with construction of the 90 street and the the development of the University of Illinois campus along with other construction. Pilsen and Chinatow were relatively lucky but they lost large chunks as well.

Is there any practical reason why truuuuk and SUV hoods are so tall and flat instead of sloping down like vans? Do they actually need all of that volume or is it just for the aesthetics of the child-mincing grille? Isn't it worse for aerodynamics (lol who cares)?

Everywhere outside NA has pedestrian safety regs on car design, so truck hoods slope down a lot more.

It certainly isn't ease of use or all the sprinter vans would have a 10' high hood.
