He has come home, where he belongs. The Ancient Mariner returns to lead his first team to glory, forever and ever. Amen!

Seeing Dana drag out 45 made me glad I didn't pay directly to watch the ppv.

E lovely snipe so I'll say go Volk, get that 155 belt

“Did those belts ever go to Africa?” Du Plessis asked at UFC 285 media day. “As far as I know, they came to America and New Zealand. I’m going to take a belt to Africa. I’m the African fighting in the UFC. Myself and Cameron [Saaiman], we breathe African air. We wake up in Africa every day. We train in Africa, we’re Africa born, we’re Africa raised, we still reside in Africa, we train out of Africa. That’s an African champion, and that’s who I’ll be.”

To be further clear, du Plessis proceeded to say of these comments that he never said anything racist or anything intimating Izzy wasn't a real African or that he was less African, and therefore this is all the media's fault for trying to stoke controversy.

Coincidentally, Dana White spent the post-fight presser making GBS threads on the media for lying and saying he said USADA didn't matter when he looked into a camera a couple weeks ago and said "Who cares what USADA says?"

Robbie Lawler was the guy who got me back into the UFC in a big way. His late career title run was unexpected and awesome and result in three of my favourite fights ever. Me and my wife watched his fight with Condit at a Hooters in Mexico City because we couldn't find anywhere else close by that was showing it and it's one of my absolute favourite MMA memories. I'm genuinely misty eyed at Bob getting to walk off into the sunset on a win, and a spectacular win at that. Dude is one of the true originals in MMA and watching him is like watching no one else. god speed.

was there a dunc post about a dude paying to be suplexed by large women in motel rooms or am i remembering pornography

A writing project I did at one point was a series of stories set in the porn industry, and as a result, I know quite a lot about fetish pornography. One of the more common ones is 'lift and carry' which is simply large women (like, over six foot) playfully pursuing smaller men and women around a room until they catch them, after which they simply carry them around in various ways. That's the whole thing. There's no sex and often no nudity. So, to answer your question, yes.

Yeah, this is the bit I wrote for the card summary for this coming week's writeup

quote:

There's an ongoing argument about what constitutes a terrible UFC card. Some hold that any card without a championship fight is bad, some need a minimum of a contendership bout, some are happy with prospects. Some consider it a factor of the proportion of ranked fighters to unranked fighters in competition on a given night.

There's truth to all of them, but I think one of the abstract concepts that runs through all of them is momentum. If the fans give a poo poo about people on the card, it'll float even if half of those people are years away from the top fifteen. Momentum's a tough thing to measure, but a real simple, real reductive way of making that measurement is asking a very simple question: How many fighters on this card are on a winning streak in the UFC?

In this case, the answer is seven. Seven out of the twenty-six fighters booked for this card as of this writing are coming off of a win in the UFC. Two of those winning streaks are one fight long. The other 73% of this card's competitors are fighting to either avoid or pull out of a losing streak.

Some struggle with inertia. Some are just inert.
It's...bad.

I've been following Barry Robinson on IG for a while. The material isn't particularly well presented, but he has a lot of good points around skill vs grit, and the common tell he labels the rhythm step.

He got a shout-out from Bo Nickal, and shares a bit from behind the scenes in camp on the gameplanning

that said it's fine for people to take pictures with former presidents, for most people the president part is the only part that matters and unless they're out campaigning in a political context it doesn't really tell you much about their political views or anything

It was such a good fight even the guys who were originally there to watch football ended up watching it. Great loving night.

Also, my wife's very middle class Mexican friends, who'd never watched a fight ever, were a bit taken aback. I jokingly pointed out that Abel Trujillo had quite striking eyes, and they proceeded to comment on every single fighter's eyes. Robbie has kind eyes, which I thought was funny in light of the best Robbie Lawler gif.

I'm still mad at Hendricks. The version of him at UFC 171 is probably the best Welterweight in the sport up to that point. He finally delivered on all that promise. It all came together. His striking, wrestling, game planning. He even added leg kicks. And he dug deep. I don't agree with the decision, but being able to rally and win the last round after rounds 3 and 4 is bloody impressive. He finally won me over. And then he followed it up by never looking even passable as a fighter ever again.
