yeah don't buy a 4080, the 4090 is only a bit more and so much faster if you're willing to go "gently caress it i'll ball out" with this build anyway

Yeah, that's the other option I should have mentioned. Sub the 4080 for a 4090 in the list I posted, and you'll still end up a little below your initial price, except with a 4090. If you're trying to optimize for gaming performance, I'd strongly consider dropping down to 32GB of RAM too. Nothing needs more than 32GB right now unless you're trying to run 100 different skyrim porn mods at once.

There was a few hours last week where there was a 4080 available for $999, and at that point I can start to see the justification, though it's still painfully expensive. As it is currently though, you may as well either go up or down a tier.

Agreed.

If you want the best gaming experience, and with that 13900k I think they do, you want the 4090.

13700k or even a 13600k or AMD equivalents will keep that gpu happy.

Prime Day sales:

2TB SN850X for $99: https://www.amazon.com/WD_BLACK-SN8...ps%2C104&sr=8-3
4TB for $229: https://www.amazon.com/WD_BLACK-SN8...104&sr=8-3&th=1

These are tied as top tier drives alongside the KC3000 and 990 Pro. Ridiculously good prices on what's basically the fastest storage you can buy.

edit: also worth noting that the 4TB Teamgroup MP34 has been $159 for a couple days now. It's a very solid Gen 3 drive, with reasonably fast TLC flash and DRAM cache. As impressive as the SN850X is, I still maintain that for 90% of people, a solid Gen 3 drive is all they realistically need.

i have a Be Quiet 120 bringing in air on each side, generic 120 exhausting out the rear. that generic fan seems to be making about half the noise, so looking forward to dumping it.

My Gigabyte board blasts my fans to 100% speed the moment my CPU goes over something like 45 degrees, so they definitely love to go way overboard with the stock fan curves. Assuming your GPU is also running cool, it sounds like you have the temperature headroom to relax your fan curve quite a bit.

That makes sense. I don’t think I would have changed what I was planning to buy just to get the game, but it was certainly a nice surprise for me.

Also, the Acer Nitro 27” 1440p 170Hz monitor from my build on the last page is currently $190 on Amazon. I saw Dr. Video Games 0031 recommend it as a good deal at $250 in the monitor thread, and was willing to pay that, so if anyone else is looking at it, you may want to jump.

Edit: Is there any downside to getting the Peerless Assassin ARGB version for $6 less than the plain one? Can I just not use the RGB and the noise and performance will be the same?

There’s a terms and conditions section on AMD’s page that mentions it, but I just get an access denied error when trying to look at that one.

I went back to Newegg to see if my 7900xt was eligible, since the higher tier stuff apparently gets premium edition, and it shows up now to add to cart. Didn’t notice it when I placed my order though.

How do I make sure a motherboard supports RGB lightning? What are the magic words I should look for in a spec sheet?

1. You look for RGB headers on your board. They come in 3 pin (addressable, i.e. you can control individual LEDs) or 4 pin (basic) flavours.
2. They work through the slot.
3. I was going to outright scoff at this but then thought you know what, it probably exists, and lo and behold it does. Good loving luck though, getting RGB components to play nicely with each other is enough of a headache without trying to sync them to another system entirely.

I'm considering updating CPU. First list is my current build, second list is what I was looking at. Is it worth a build refresh going from an 8700k? Feedback would be great, particularly on Mobo and PSU - I currently have a 650 watt PSU from 2018 - should I get a replacement, and should I get one with more wattage? I'd also like a MoBo with Bluetooth so I can use a wireless controller. I just tossed some RAM in there, I don't know how much DDR5 speeds matter. The computer is in a bedroom so keeping noise down is a priority. Current build is pretty good from that perspective, so I was hoping to re-use the case.

Thanks, got my eye on that 4TB SN850X! Do motherboards tend to take care of any heatsink issues? The mobo I'm looking at says "The heat fins have been expanded to cool the PCIe Gen 5 enabled NVMe drive slot." My only experience with nVME drives is with PS5 storage, where a discrete heatsink is required.

Started to slowly buy parts for my build thanks to some prime day sales. Nabbed a 4080 for under $1450 CAD which for Canada is pretty good (under $1100 USD) and a 1TB Samsung 980 Pro for almost 50% off (just need it for a boot drive, I've got plenty of other SSDs for bulk storage).

I just couldn't push myself to go for the 4090. The cheapest even on sale was still over $2000 CAD and an extra $600 was just too much. I'm waiting to see if there's any deals on the 7800X3D in the next month or so before buying the rest but this thing should be a real beast.

Not to apply too much pressure, but if you can grab some things now, you'll save a bit of money in the current Prime Day/Fantastech sales. Particularly, the SN850X, which is equivalent to the 990 Pro, is available for $90 for 2TB. Not sure we'll see that again in the near future, so it's probably worth grabbing now.

Also the Hyper 212 is not an adequate cooler for the 13700K, which is a very power-hungry CPU. I'd go with at least a large dual-tower cooler like the Peerless Assassin.

If you're only interested in gaming performance, then you could consider bumping up to the 7800X3D. It outperforms the 13700K in every review in gaming, though it falls behind the 13700K in multithreaded non-gaming stuff.

This all seems good to me. Though you should consider some of the 12600K + motherboard combos on newegg right now. The $60-off coupon code for the 12600K can apply on top of any of these bundle prices, bringing some of them below the $300 that your current choices sum up to. Not sure how B&H shipping and duties to Canada is, but the link in my post above shows it at $566.98 CAD with Starfield.

I'll take a look but if there's any shipping or duty charges it's probably cheaper here. Most places in Canada seem to have it around $579 CAD pickup/free shipping according to PCPartPicker (Starfield is a "wait for major Steam sale" game for me). I'm hoping for maybe under $550 CAD at least (considering 7900Xs are going on sale for $475 right now) but that's probably too much to ask for.

How do I make sure a motherboard supports RGB lightning? What are the magic words I should look for in a spec sheet?

Some have LEDs, some have 4 pin headers, some have jcorsair headers (which are from corsairs older standard, not the brand new link system)

ASUS motherboards can be controlled by icue corsair or ASUS softwire, which is how I do everything. Even an ASUS GPU will show up in icue.

And I’ve seen some RAM units with attached RGB lights on them. Do they need to plug into the motherboard/a separate RGB controller or do they somehow just work through the normal RAM slot?

Pop um in and run the required program in the background. There are some 3rd party programs that can control and sync RGB but my wife and I are all in on corsair and I highly recommend it if you want a bunch of pointless LEDs to work well together. The companies are all building ecosystems for RGB so my advice is to limit the number of companies you use for RGB or stick to companies that are working together.

E: Is it possible to connect the RGB elements in a pc into a Phillips hue/apple HomeKit setup?

Yes.

Silicon Power UD90 4TB is $170 during Prime Day though not technically a Prime Day sale: https://a.co/d/i8nvWgl

For a secondary NVMe for mass storage, am I right in thinking it’s a good deal? No DRAM but TLC NAND and performance is solid: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/silicon-power-ud90-ssd-review
