I read The Great Divergence in grad school and really liked it. it’s a historiographic examination of the economic changes of the 18th and 19th centuries specifically with regards to trying to understand why China, objectively the wealthiest polity on earth in 1700, was eventually displaced and exploited by Europe. it’s got a few parts about the first embassies and ambassadorial visits between European powers and the Qing discussing the sort of social and economic pressures/expectations scaffolding the way the two sets of officials would interact with each other, doing a sort of narrative thing about early official encounters between China and colonial entities. the second half has a lot of cliometrics and historiography exploring why the author thinks things happened the way they did with lots of nice CSPAM friendly charts about linen production, exports, etc but with none of the Diamond style determinism and a lot of appropriately hedged and contextualized historical interpretation.

no yellow peril since it largely avoids discussing the Communist Party and I remember it being an pretty edifying read

Thailand is about to erupt. Pita failed in his bid to become PM despite MFP winning the most votes in the election. In the whole of the 250 member junta-appointed senate, I believe only 11 voted for Pita (he had 312 members of parliament in an alliance with him before today and got 323 as his final tally).

No idea what's going to happen now. Probably Pheu Thai will offer up a compromise candidate. There are definitely going to be insane amounts of protest

It was pretty clear that the MFP is US-backed, and it may have been a case that both Pheu Thai and the military weren't that enthused by such an outcome.

I think you're reading too much into the whole "color revolution" U.S.-centric narrative. It might be true that they are more aligned toward the U.S. than China but I think it's much more about MFP wanting to repeal the lese-majeste law than anything else. Thailand has been a bit sour with China as of late anyway https://asiatimes.com/2022/06/china-losing-us-gaining-crucial-ground-in-thailand/

I think any leader of Thailand would likely continue the tradition of playing China and the U.S. off against each other

The one piece of evidence in that article seems to be that a rail-line has been slow moving in terms of construction. Thailand has still slowly been moving into China's orbit and I don't think it is going to stop.

would not be surprised if thaksin wins this somehow. If PT doesnt, will likely be big protests. Thaksin is probably more palatable to the military/aristocrat reactionaries in the senate than MFP.

to be clear, there is a legitimate difference between the South China Sea, and the West Philippine Sea, where the WPS is a subset/subregion of the SCS. It's not a purely semantic shibboleth like CPP versus CPC

when I complain about how Philippine politics treats the WPS, my quarrel is mostly about how:

- it's treated as an absolute non-negotiable
- China is considered the only problematic actor in the issue
- it is worth kowtowing to the Americans over it
