Seriously, do drugs
Funnily enough there is a market for elon's "based" unfiltered LLM, and it's horny weirdos who want to erp with a chatbot. Every publicly accessable LLM gets swarmed by them and ends up heavily censoring their outputs and/or restricting access. If he ever ends up releasing anything, he's going to once again quickly learn why things are done the way they are, as the AI is bombarded with requests to generate pedophilic raceplay torture porn.

Just read a local news article about the gov't agency that notifies of highway conditions and safety got rate limited while trying to get out the word of highway closures due to forest fires. I hope this is a wakeup call to anyone wanting to share vital information that it's a bad thing when a key link is in the clutches of an idiot manbaby with no oversight.

Yeah, a lot of storm information used to come to us through the ABstorm hash tag, so much so that the government weather website specifically mentions it.

That's all gone now.

We dealt with this tonight. In our Discord channel we had a bot to post weather alerts and updates from the NWS along with some other local safety stuff. Since Twitter took a dump the bot died and we haven’t been able to find a replacement. Low and behold tonight we had active tornados going through the area and were all handing together to post what updates we could get from various sources. Thankfully a couple of us were paying attention or else many of us would have been unprepared entirely.

Public safety especially really needs to rethink relying upon a third party service that they don’t own or control for a vital service.

I wonder if this is something that a distributed system like mastodon could be useful for, ie governments agencies can run a node or whatever.

There needs to be something a step below emergency broadcast and amber alerts

The NWS has a direct API, there's no need to use a Twitter bot.

I mean point the Discord bot at the NWS API instead of the Twitter API, which is just pulling data from the NWS API anyway.

The discord bot is probably a generic twitter bot made by someone with no connection to the server whose only function is to repost tweets. You can't just give it an API url instead of a twitter handle and assume it'll figure it out. That's.. That's not how computers work.

You just gotta show up to discord with your resume and ask the introductions channel to speak with the bot. Kids these days 🙄

Is the discord bot not some engine that makes an API call to twitter on a schedule to see if a particular account has tweeted, then parses and reposts that content to discord? That's what the twitter bot is probably doing, except with NWS and posting new data to twitter as it comes in. Just ... skip the middle man? I feel like I'm missing something basic, what is twitter adding here.

I can’t tell if you’re trolling or not, but the Twitter API and NWS API have nothing to do with each other. You have to model the NWS API to know how to talk to it and parse/present data… You can’t just feed a fit-for-purpose Twitter API bot a different API and have it do anything.

EDIT: AreWeDrunkYet could probably run twitter now that i think about it.

How do you make sure you don't go over the rate limit?

AreWeDrunkYet

Yeah of course you can't just reuse the bot you made to hit the twitter API. But the level of effort of "discord bot that reads and reposts from twitter" and "discord bot that reads and reposts from NWS" is about the same? If anything the bot dealing with twitter is going to be more of a hassle because of twitter limits on unauthenticated access. Why would someone that can navigate the twitter API be unable to figure out NWS's?

I was thinking about this and I wonder if there are just a lot more examples available for making Twitter to discord bots that people can copy paste and then change one small thing, compared to the possibility of writing something to consume the NWS API from scratch.

You didnt need to make a bot to have twitter posts automatically go to discord, it was built in as a easy to setup webhook until the API price changes.

I just realized what I dislike most about Musk: He's not ambitious enough.

I mean, yeah, this is a good thing in terms of how awful anything he realizes would be, but when my tech-bro adjacent friends keep telling me, "At least Musk is pushing boundaries and inspiring innovation," I have to wonder -- this is your idea of world-defining innovation? A car tunnel in Las Vegas? Touch screens in cars? Dream bigger, my bros.

You're missing a great deal, yes. On the user side they install a twitter bot and give it the instruction "hey look at this twitter handle". The bot is built by someone else who they don't know - it only takes twitter handles and only parses the specific JSON objects it returns. Could that programmer have the expertise to build something that looks at other APIs? Probably. The user however doesn't have access to the programmer nor means to contract them to make bespoke bots - they have a bot that translates twitter output. They can't point his twitter bot at any API and get coherent output, that's stupid.

To try to dumb it down. It's like asking an agency to send you someone who speaks Spanish then handing him a document in French and when they tell you they only speak Spanish you go "well gee it's the same thing - just looking at letters written in another language and making them English right? I don't see the difference."

Legit the only good thing Twitter has done post Musk.

No idea why he doesn't carve out some kind of exception for gold checkers from Community Notes (he could just fudge the votes internally so that it never actually gets published, as I'm sure he does on his own disputed stuff).
