Yeah, it's really good. I think, in terms of long form story telling I like Bendis Daredevil more than Miller Daredevil, but a single arc it's gotta be Born Again.

I agree on both counts. I prefer Bendis' run to Miller's original early '80s run, but "Born Again" is an all-time great story -- definitely Daredevil's best, and probably one of the best ever to come from superhero comics.

Any recommendations for someone who wants to read some Venom? I'm trying the Cates run but it's not quite clicking for me - a bit too much focus on cosmic shenanigans/Reed Richards in a silly hat. Ideally, I'd want something more in line with the movies whole "twisted rom-com" factor. Should I just steel myself and dive into the 90s Black Suit SM poo poo?

I really dug the Venom run with Flash Thompson as host, at least at the beginning of the storyline when he was using Venom for military operations. Written by Rick Remender, at least for the first 20 issues or so. Kinda fell off when they went off into space.

Found Morrison’s All-Star Superman at the library and decided to reread it after many years. It’s still great. Is this considered the high water mark for Morrison’s writing or…where do I go from here?

It's definitely one of their more accessible works but I mean they're one of the best Big 2 writers of all time. Invisibles, Doom Patrol, Animal Man, Final Crisis, We3, X-men, Arkham Asylum, you really can't go wrong

It's true. It's more about what flavor of Grant you want.

Just read DC One Million and it's like a prequel/sequel to All Star Superman. I really enjoyed it, especially the first half tie-ins, but a friend of mine wasn't really into it.

I guess what I’m trying to avoid is a large commitment.

Edit: As I am at the whims of my local library, Arkham Asylum feels like the next move.

Animal Man is relatively short and (IMHO) has all Morrison's best qualities with none of their worst

Animal Man is a great recommendation. Definitely less polished, but in some ways better for it.

Flex Mentallo is a huge love letter to comics and is great, unless you're violently repulsed by Sex

Seven Soldiers is great if you read the 2 volume version that has everything in publication order. I can't imagine reading the books separately.

Invisibles was great when I read it decades ago, but at this point it goes in a box with Preacher and Transmet, a place I fondly remember and should not revisit.

Batman is generally great but is very interwoven and qualifies as a Commitment.

The best part of Animal Man is that Grant’s author insert got stuck in the DC Universe and eventually got killed by gorillas

I might just read something else so I don't get burnt out.

I didn't much like the post-Morrison Animal Man. I like most of Milligan's other work, but his run was a lot of weirdness for weirdness's sake, and then Delano tried to turn it into a horror comic.

Preacher yes, but outside of one REALLY regrettable part I think Transmet still holds up and its themes are still relevant to the extreme.

He would also refer to these women as his "Filthy Assistant," which Spider did too. IIRC.

Actually, I meant the assistant in the past who Spider basically used as a trojan mule that got exposed to some sort of lust gas and engaged in a one woman orgy that got filmed and put online while Spider got the info he wanted and skipped off, and then she had to deal with all the consequences of 'Spider Jerusalem turned me into a porn star."

Grooming is one thing, subjecting a woman to multiple cases of rape (she was whacked out of her mind on lust drugs, she could not consent, that's rape) and not giving a drat whatsoever is on a whole different level, and if Ellis had never sexpested himself with any women in real life, you could file all that grooming in Transmet under 'Spider's a hosed up, ultraflawed bastard with a core of good intentions'. But the porn star thing is inexcusable no matter what kind of man this theorized non-sexpest Ellis was.

Is there anything out there that's capturing the vibe of slightly alternative early 90s Vertigo strangeness? I'm really missing the "weird" from comics right now.

I'm currently reading the Doom Patrol mini, which is fun and a little off-kilter, but very sanded down to fit into a big DC event and The X-Cellent, which is great fun when it actually comes out.

What are some good books for a 12 year old just getting into graphic novels? My boyfriend and I are struggling to come up with age appropriate stuff for his nephew to try. Wish I had more specifics about the nephew's likes: all I know is typical minecraft loving preteen country boy. And since too much sex and violence is out so that take out titles like Watchmen, which may go over his head anyway. When I was that age I just read whatever was on the library shelf and a bunch of manga, which is no help either.

The Voice of Labor

I was big into sandman at that age. I would contend that neil gaiman is an fantastic young adult fiction writer even when he's trying to write adult stuff.

the 90s were edgier times though so who knows

The 2000s Ultimate Spider-Man run is super long and has aged pretty well for the most part, it's really accessible to kids as they keep Peter a high schooler the whole time. Everyone loves Spider-Man.

The Amulet books are pretty popular with kids those age. (That said, the first book starts with the hero's dad dying in a car accident; it's not graphic or anything but of course not every kid will be able to deal with that.)

Sandman might be on the borderline but we'll look into everything, thanks all! Did some asking tonight and apparently he just finished Naruto so he is reading manga as well (we were just asked for "graphic novel" suggestions by nephew's mom). Though idk if there's much other than My Hero Acadamia on that front for current issue stuff. One Piece is long as hell too, no idea if the kid should embark on that or any other of the classic early 2000s shonen manga.
