It probably wasn't really "everyone" on either side. People who knew about the trial details were harassing Yogi because they thought he was technically the murderer, and different people who didn't pay as close attention but found out about Misty harassed her because they thought Yogi was completely innocent. Plus Redd White was presumably inflaming both sides by spreading rumors around for his blackmailing purposes.

It's worth noting that while Manfred doesn't seem to spare much thought for defense attorneys, Gregory's name lives his mind permanently. He is REALLY mad about that penalty. Also, I assume that even if Japanifornia doesn't arrest Edgeworth for "murdering" his father, him being broken by the realization would be enough for von Karma. DKII posted:

What I don't get is why Yogi didn't just shoot the windows in the first place. Or make sure the gun isn't loaded and bludgeon the glass with it. I suppose a single bullet hole wouldn't have much airflow, but that's better than nothing, and I'm pretty sure it would make the rest of the glass much easier to break.

From the dialog snippets we've seen from the time that the three were trapped in the elevator, Yogi was in the middle of a blind panic and definitely not thinking straight, Miles was young and probably just as scared of the panicking Yogi as he was of the actual emergency at hand, and Gregory - who seemed calmer - might have been wary of relying on Yogi for anything.

Part 109: Episode 4, Final Day: Trial: Yanni Yogi We're here. Time to get to the bottom of... everything. Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture (Today, things are going to get settled at last... A lot of things.) Music: Silence Sound: Electric Ping x 2 Wh-what's the big idea!? Sound: Damage 2 Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture S-s-sorry, Nick! I only touched your shoulder! It's the next morning. I guess spirit mediums make good batteries; she held that charge a long time. Anyhow, today's the last day of the trial! Good luck, Nick! Yeah... thanks, Maya. ... (I hope von Karma doesn't push him too hard.) ... Music: Silence Sound: Electric Ping x 2 Sound: Damage 2 Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture Sorry! I'm sorry! Why don't you go over and give Karma a hearty handshake when you see him? Maya... Maybe you should go outside and discharge? Right. Good idea. Sound: Light Bulb (Try not to electrocute anyone on your way out...) Sound: Door Opens Sound: Electric Ping Music: Courtroom Lobby ~ Beginning Overture Sound: Door Opens What's gotten into that girl? Detective Gumshoe! Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Objection Uh... good morning. How did it go, Detective? Sound: Light Bulb I just brought him in. Took all night, pal. Thanks, Detective Gumshoe. You must be tired. (Yogi says he's forgotten his own name...) Music: Silence (But that has to be a lie!) (He does remember... and I'm going to prove it!) I guess we know what the first part of today's trial will be about. Sound: Gallery Sound: Gavel Music: Trial The defense is ready, Your Honor. ... ... Sound: Light Bulb U-uh... right, very well. The judge is stunned into silence by Karma's basic compliance. I ask that the prosecution submit decisive evidence. Understood. ... Sound: Light Bulb We have a very long, steep climb ahead of us. Very well, Mr. von Karma, your opening statement. Right. In yesterday's trial, the defense asserted that the caretaker was the murderer. However, the caretaker has yet to confirm this. Karma's plan is to have Edgeworth confess to the DL-6 Incident, which can only come up if we nail the caretaker as wanting revenge for said incident. So of course he really does want us to succeed here, initially. Very well! Please bring the witness into the courtroom. Ladies and gentlemen of the court... I believe you all remember our witness. In addition, he has currently lost memory of his name and identity. Witness! Why did you run away yesterday? I-I see. Very well, please begin your testimony. Music: Silence Sound: Gavel Zzzz... mmph? Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato But, I wasn't running away or nothing. I, uh, went to buy some food for Polly, see... I figured I got nothing to do with this incident anyhow. So, my testimony yesterday stands as is. Not a lot to work with there. I guess we push on the motive part? Music: Silence Hmm... Very well. (He has to know his name!) (Yanni Yogi! You're Yanni Yogi and I'm going to prove it!) Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato (Do that and the motive will prove itself!) No idea how to do that yet, so I guess we'll just start by pressing on everything as usual. Er, I'm really sorry about just leaving yesterday like I did. I'd call what you did "running away," and not "just leaving." Now, Mr. Wright, there's no need to rush to conclusions. Listen to the testimony. (He sure seems relaxed!) Of course Karma is relaxed, he's in a win-win here. Either Edgeworth is guilty here if we're incompetent at this cross, or Edgeworth confesses to DL-6 because he's a weirdo. But, I wasn't running away or nothing. Then why did you leave!? He's just about to say why! (If I sat quietly, Edgeworth would be guilty in three minutes!) Hey, I wouldn't press on everything if the game didn't hide its plot triggers behind random presses all the time. ...Okay I would still press on everything. I, uh, went to buy some food for Polly, see... Food...? Well, Polly is a bit of a gourmand, you see. They only have them in the big pet shop downtown. But you weren't arrested until this morning! Er... well... I kind of got lost, you see. The witness has trouble remembering things sometimes. (Yeah, right! Nice try von Karma! No one's going to believe that!) (Please! Your Honor, come to your senses!) Sound: Whoops I figured I got nothing to do with this incident anyhow. You've lost much of your memory, is that correct? Er... ayup, seems like it. Sound: Desk Slam Uh... Or... Or maybe you're lying about not having your memory, hmm? You know exactly who you are! Karma may be "relaxed" but he's still objecting to every point we try to make. If you claim he's lying, then show the court proof! (Grr...) (That's impossible!) Very well, witness. Please continue. Er... I mean, I'd need one of those "motive" things, right? And I don't got one. How can you say you had no motive? I say you do! That's why you took revenge on them! Right? Please don't make me repeat myself, Mr. Wright! He can't hold a grudge! It's impossible! (I have to prove he's lying about his memory...) Music: Silence Sound: Gavel Pressing on the last two of Yogi's statements (in either order) leads to the judge interrupting us. Might I say something, Mr. Wright? Yes... Yes, Your Honor? You've been calling the witness's memory of the past or lack thereof into question. Of course, Your Honor. The witness has said he has "nothing to do with this case" and "no motive"... Sound: Desk Slam Sound: Objection Music: Telling the Truth Sound: Gallery Sound: Gavel Order! Order! Sound: Whack Or... are you saying... Of course, Your Honor! Sound: Fwa-Shing 2 Ho hoh! Now, this is interesting. (Don't play dumb von Karma!) Sound: Stab A penalty attached, but it's not much of a choice here. Music: Silence Sound: Objection ... Yogi...? That name seems familiar. Sound: Realization ... Oh! Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Shock 2 Sound: Objection quote:The penalty on this choice doesn't even matter, the other two options are so ridiculous. Let's start by claiming he's Gregory Edgeworth. quote:The old man being the victim would be an even neater trick. Music: Telling the Truth But, what does this mean? Sound: Desk Slam Tsk tsk tsk... Jumping to conclusions again, Mr. Wright! However... How do you propose to prove this to the court? Sound: Realization ... And, allow me to repeat, once more, that the witness has lost his memory! (This is it...) (I have to do this now!) (Then I've got nowhere else to go!) Nick! It's okay. It's actually quite simple. Your Honor! Please take this man's fingerprints! You know, that's not a bad idea. Seems kind of obvious though, so Karma must have a counter for it. I see... that makes sense. Tsk tsk tsk! Sound: Realization Music: Silence Huh? Sound: Realization Wh-why? What? What!? No fingerprints!? Sound: Light Bulb Music: Suspense Sound: Gavel I burned my fingers working with the stuff. Ayup. Wh-what!? Sound: Stab (Yogi, you sneak!) Wait, so was the crazy old man act really just an act the whole time? Hmm... I guess we will not be able to prove his identity. (No...!) Uh... Hmm? (No!!!) (I know what happpened! I know everything!) (I... I just can't prove it!) (There has to be another way!) Sound: Fwa-Shing 2 Nick! What are we going to do!? Sound: Whack (What do I do!?) Tsk tsk tsk... Well, Mr. Wright? (Yeah, yeah, very funny. You're a sore winner, von Karma.) (...) (Wait a second...) Sound: Realization Music: Silence Sound: Realization No way. Wh-what is it, Nick? No... you're not going to...!? Your Honor! Sound: Desk Slam Take Mr. von Karma up? Sound: Realization On my... proposal? Sound: Realization Exactly, Your Honor! Sound: Objection

There's a lot of wackiness in the series. Butz (just all of Butz), the pun names, Redd White, literally bringing dead characters back via spirit mediums, the Steel Samurai, Oldbag, Gumshoe and his array of gadgets, etc. And hell, now we strongly suspect that Von Karma has something to do with the murder and he even tazed the main characters and stole vital evidence! And you think you're ready for just about anything. Then Phoenix requests to cross-examine a parrot. The games are absolutely wonderful, and the best part is that it's not even out of left field! The parrot was introduced. We know the parrot has relevant info. It's Chekhov's parrot. And the writers had the chops to actually take the parrot off of the metaphorical wall!

Part 110: Episode 4, Final Day, Trial: Polly Tells All Music: Telling the Truth Sound: Gallery Sound: Gavel x 3 O-order! Order! Uh... well, what do you think, Mr. von Karma? Sound: Whack Sound: Damage 2 Wait a second! Sound: Desk Slam I have a right to do as you suggested! Mmph... ... ! Sound: Light Bulb Of course, should you go through with this... Nick... this is crazy! Sound: Fwa-Shing 2 Not really, but what choice do we have? Let the parrot take the stand. I will cross-examine her, Your Honor. ! Sound: Light Bulb (von Karma's rigged every person's testimony, every piece of evidence...) (Except the parrot! She's my last chance!) (At least... I think so.) quote:Maybe we should try and back out of this nonsense while we still can? Sound: Gavel Now there's an iconic line for you. Music: Trial I'm so embarassed right now. That's... quite a bird. Please tell us your name? I'm not doing it, I'm not making new talking-head icons for the drat parrot. Name! Sound: Gavel "..." The witness is ignoring me. Music: Silence Ahem. Very well, witness... Who is your owner? Please, er... testify for us. Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato "..." "..." Music: Silence Well I hope you're all very satisfied with yourselves. Hmm... Very well, begin your cross-examination. Right... ... I... I don't know! What do we do, Maya? Sound: Whoops Hmm... Sound: Testimony 2 Music: Questioning - Moderato W-well... We need to show the judge that her owner is Mr. Yogi! Uh, press and pray I guess? "Hello! Hello!" *squawk* Sound: Desk Slam I want you to testify! R-right! Uh... What do I say? That's neat, these are all ones we actually had to stumble across during the investigation. The first one directly led to the DL-6 connection and is the obvious choice, though. (As I recall... two days ago...) *squawk* "Don't forget DL-6!" *squawk* Sound: Realization (If I can get Polly to say that here...!) Um, Polly? Have we forgotten something? "..." "..." Music: Silence Sound: Realization ...! Sound: Light Bulb Forgot! Something we forgot! Sound: Whack "Hello! Hello!" *squawk* Sound: Stab It's not ridiculous enough that we put a parrot on the stand, but Karma actually coached the parrot to ignore our question and make us look even crazier for this stunt. Love it. (This is ridiculous! Why won't she say it!?) Sound: Realization (Wait...) (Don't tell me von Karma expected this!) (He couldn't have retrained the parrot... could he!?) Music: Questioning - Moderato We're brought back to our cross, and the second "line" of the parrot's "testimony". "..." Sound: Desk Slam "..." Not much going on with that one. quote:It's not really different, but it's kind of funny to see the scene for presenting evidence incorrectly when the line of testimony is just a parrot doing its "..." thing. I suppose I'll present the attorney's badge, for old time's sake. I guess everything is in this one prompt that we found. I figured out how the name ties into this guy's identity like 11 updates ago, so let's get the joke answer out of the way next. Huh? The safe? Why? Sound: Light Bulb Polly! What was the number to the safe in the shack? "1228... 1228..." Sound: Realization ... My, what a reckless parrot. Well, Mr. Wright? Wait, does it? I mean, yes, of course it does! I don't like it when Phoenix is in triumph pose and I don't understand why. Music: Silence Hah! Ridiculous! Ohhh I just got it I think! quote:If we're not sure (or, like me, you want to explore other options), we can back off on our question and say the topic doesn't have anything to do with anything. Sound: Fwa-Shing 2 Show us your proof! Here comes the evidence prompt... There we go, attorney's badge it is! Admittedly, I didn't think you had anything to show us. (Uh oh... I think that was the wrong thing to show them.) Music: Questioning - Moderato The witness may continue her testimony... And we're dumped back to the cross, where we have to press again to get back to where we were. No penalties at least - apparently having to cross-examine a parrot is punishment enough. So I ask you, what evidence links the safe combination to Yanni Yogi's identity?
