As my paternal grandmother was dying in a Catholic hospital, after a few hours of waiting only me, my dad, and a family friend were in the room. The hospital pastor or whatever came into the room and introduced himself, and simultaneously my dad and told him to :frogout:. Dad and I had been estranged for some years at that time, and it was a bonding moment for us to tell the clergyman to gently caress off.

Happily shilling for China!
Mom's side were irreligious New England wasps, probably back a few gens. Like my grandparents on that side weren't even religious.
Dad was a lapsed Catholic.
Took us to a UU church, but that's basically the most irreligious type of building in existence so lol.

Easy enough to be this way in New England, where most people don't give a gently caress anyway.

My mom is technically methodist but we only really went to church on Christmas and Easter and when we would visit my nana during the summers. I didn't know any kids in my city through church. That made me kinda of weird. Most kids had church friends.

I went to a couple of hippie dippie things like this one sweat lodge done on new years when I was a teen. I remember being closed up in a closet as a group with some dude taking about jesus and I think that was the same group. I don't know what church it was. It seemed to pick out the coolest rituals from every religion.

Anyway my dad is more "spiritual" I guess you would say, and he believes some paranormal stuff. Like he tells a story of living in a haunted house for example. I grew up hearing Coast to Coast late nights when I would see my dad. He usually worked until late at night so i didn't always get to see him.

My parents are still together in their 70s. They were high school sweethearts. But they didn't really raise us that religious. I remember one time in my early 20s or late teens talking to my mom and she for some reason asked if I believed in God and I said no and she was actually shocked. I guess she thought my experience with her religion stuck with me more than it really did.

I remember having to learn the lord's prayer to get a bike when I was like 8. My grandmother made me do it. She still loved me even though I grew up to be pretty non religious. I would still go to the big church things like the holidays but I just did it to make my mom and nana happy.

Only time I went to church was when my mom was dating a Catholic guy. It was boring as gently caress but they had lemon filled donuts and chocolate milk after service so no bad memories

My grandma slapped the poo poo out of me in my teens when I said 'Jesus Christ' for something I don't remember.

I guess my family is Irish Catholic? It never was a big part of my life. My mom was scared of Pokémon for being Satanic but Nana was the
one who got it for me.

Nonreligious upbringing here. One summer the couple other kids at my babysitter's house all went to a summer bible school at the lutheran church so I had to sit around bored by myself and they always came back with fun looking crafts and poo poo, so I asked my mom if I could go and she said sure why not (she was raised lutheran but hadn't been to church since before I was born). Anyway it was weird and I was extremely confused

The only time I've ever been to church was one time an aunt had to babysit me and dragged me along. That time I also didn't know what they were talking about but it had the added bonus of being insanely boring

All in all I'm glad my parents didn't gently caress around with that stuff, but if god is indeed real lol thanks for the ticket to hell mom & dad

I think what really sent my parents over the cliff of keeping up appearances, in addition to not caring about religion at all, was when my mom's parents started "rebuking" her for practicing "that satanic yoger crap."

Rebuked for stretching and meditating while they're sending all their money to Robertson and Falwell lol

My parents weren't religious but I went to a good (but also poo poo) high school in the north of England where we had a lesson that covered religion and other people's beliefs. We had a really loving good, passionate teacher for that. He stressed the importance in respecting how other people come to their beliefs and that a difference in them doesn't mean you can't get along.
He had alopecia and a lot of kids were kind of mean about it, at the time it meant nothing to me.
I phoned it in and I know for a fact he had no clue anything he taught ever stuck or meant anything, and reflecting on that now makes me feel bad.

Blah, he didn't even undergo crurifragium - he was given the easy way out by being stabbed.

Now, if he'd been on a breaking wheel, that would have been much different.

my extremely religious single mother grandma forced my dad and uncle to go to church until they were physically too large to force

my mom (7th of 7) was raised by my insanely cool grandma and my chips & porn salesman grandfather. suffice to say they were not religious whatsoever.

for some reason, several of my mom's siblings became religious, I think for their spouses, and the result is I have like 15 extremely religious, politically active cousins who my grandma secretly hated because they were doing poo poo like picket abortion clinics with fetus signs

my parents raised me and my brother atheist but said we were free to become religious but not to expect them to respect us for it lol

We never went to church, never talked about religion, never gave any of that poo poo the time of day. I was in the 6th grade before I found out most people believe in God. It was pretty cool honestly. I mean my parents are Boomers, they have horrifying politics, that's a given. But they kept religion out of it.

There must be other people out there like that. Let's all get together and talk about the stuff our families didn't do.

A couple of days before I went away to university at 18, my Dad took me aside and sat me down saying we needed to have a talk. I thought it was gonna be some incredibly awkward chat about sex or drugs, but instead he said something like "Son, you can make your life own choices at university and do what you want once you're away from us. But if you get religion, we'll think you're stupid."

"That's what they all say!"

Jesus was a carpenter by training, the same as his dad Joseph (Mark 6:3).

So looking at it, it was kind of awkward that he died by being nailed to a piece of wood.

I got baptised to keep the grandparents happy but neither of my parents were ever religious, and hardly anyone I knew really was. Certainly not to the point it was a big thing in their public life, I don’t know what acquaintances got up to in private. My mum’s a lesbian and had a sister get sucked into a Christian cult though, and my dad was a rational sorta guy who taught me it was good to let people be if they’re doing no harm, but also that it was fine to find their beliefs and practices bemusing.

Good parents. Thanks guys. Miss you dad :unsmith:
