Oliver (a streamer I started watching for his absolutely incredible Outer Wilds run) just finished playing this game, and I was shocked at how long you can ignore Zote in Deepnest and still have him survive. He went to save him a few times but immediately got distracted because, and I quote, "Zote is very forgettable". Really though I was gonna see him get the neglect achievement but he basically beat the entire damned game before getting around to rescuing Zote before his final cleanup circuit prior to fighting the final boss and he still got to see 100% of the Zote content, I was impressed at how forgiving the game was there.

I’m pretty sure Zote can only die to the Vengefly King, I think the trigger is picking up the Mantis Claw. Once you see him in Deepnest he’ll just stay there until you free him.

Zote's just a bit of a dickhead really and there are good arguments for letting him die (gently caress that rude guy) and there are good arguments for saving him (I get to kill that dickhead over and over again) so in conclusion I've decided that the best fate for him is to never even go into the first room and leave him in a schrodinger's state of deadalive/never-rendered for the rest of eternity.
