50 thousand people used to live here. Now, it's the Mushroom Kingdom.
Back when I played FF14 2.0 I always felt it a bit stressful to learn new boss patterns in a group. Then theres those dudes who wanna rush through the dungeon and pull several mobs at once while you are still learning what to do.

I played a little of Um Jammer Lammy today on a lark, and man, I forgot how charming that game is. I think PaRappa 2 has a better soundtrack overall, but some of these songs are total bangers. Lammy is a fun protagonist too.

I'm also in love with how completely early-2000s-core the vibes are. Lammy's bob, crop top, and flared jeans are crazily of that time period--the game in general feels like the Josie and the Pussycats movie or something, and it kinda rules.

The plot of Um Jammer Lammy is completely unhinged and feels like something you half dreamt under anaesthesia. From the wiki:

The game begins in Lammy's dream. After arriving barely in time for her concert, she discovers that Chop Chop Master Onion has become the new vocalist of her band, MilkCan. His lyrics foreshadow the events of each level in the game, and once it is completed, he points out that Lammy's guitar has transformed into a vacuum cleaner (although she does not seem to recognize it), and then gives a rather nonsensical speech ending with the phrase "Dojo, casino, it's all in the mind". Lammy then wakes up from her dream and realises that she only has 15 minutes before her concert starts. She begins to rush to her concert but is obstructed by Chief Puddle's fire crew trying to put out a large burning building. As she tries to get past, he notices her and tells her to help put out the fire. Although nervous at first, Lammy notices a billboard for Joe Chin's Casino and remembers Chop Chop Master Onion's speech in her dream, giving her the confidence to put out the fire (as her guitar is "in her mind"). After Lammy puts out the fire, Chief Puddle gives her pizza as thanks, but this causes her stomach to briefly expand. When she remembers her shortly upcoming concert, she again begins to rush but quickly gets tired, and is mistaken by Cathy Pillar to be in labour. Once Lammy's stomach instantly deflates from its owner fully digesting the pizza, Cathy realises her mistake and asks Lammy to help put the delivered babies to sleep. Seeing a few of the babies playing again reminds Lammy of Chop Chop Master Onion's speech, giving her confidence. Once the babies are asleep, Lammy slips on a skateboard and lands on a low flying plane. The plane's pilot, Captain Fussenpepper, is suffering from rapid personality changes and confusion and is clearly in no fit state to fly the plane, so Lammy must act as co-pilot. An announcement mentioning the plane's onboard casino reminds her once more of Chop Chop Master Onion's speech, giving her the confidence to fly the plane without crashing (although the cutscene after shows the plane land in a car parking lot). Unfortunately, Lammy accidentally leaves her guitar on the plane, so she heads into Paul Chuck's shop to buy a new one. He points out how greedy she is being for wanting to give him money in exchange for goods (in a rather erotic manner), and so he refuses to make the guitar unless she helps him saw down the wood. Lammy initially protests as she is running out of time before the concert, but, after overhearing a segment of the song "Casino In My Hair" on the radio, she remembers Chop Chop Master Onion's speech yet again, giving her confidence. Immediately after getting her new guitar, Lammy sprints out of the store, only to literally die and go to hell after slipping on a banana peel (Or in the US, her clothes get caught on the door and flies so far that she time warps onto an island). Teriyaki Yoko agrees to bring Lammy back to life for her MilkCan concert as long as she plays well enough as a guitarist in Teriyaki's own performance. Teriyaki hands her a guitar and she is reminded by absolutely nothing at all that her guitar is in her mind (even though her guitar is actually in her hands), giving her the confidence to play for Teriyaki. Once Teriyaki's performance is over, they send Lammy back to the living world using what looks like a fax machine, although as Lammy is leaving, she has a brief encounter with her evil twin, Rammy, who is angry that Lammy replaced her in the concert. Once Lammy arrives for her concert, she starts to explain what happened, but so do Ma-san and Katy, indicating that they have been on similarly hectic journeys. Then, they play a song at their concert and the game ends.

lol I figured that if FF14 includes a bunch of past series stuff and the music therein that they'd have a version of Four Fiends, but I didn't know until now that they literally asked Hyadain(niconico superstar who made a bunch of video game songs that went relatively viral back in the day) to come in and do it, and he made Forged In Crimson:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uIQeJJrjllk&hd=1

seems like the original animation for his Four Fiends song is gone from youtube except for extremely low res reuploads, but there is this AI upscale that's decent:

:allears: I'm glad people get to enjoy such a heartfelt game like FF14. I'll never play it, but I'm happy for you guys. and hey I get to pillage the soundtracks that get put out for it too I suppose

The moment the Rubicante fight released, everyone went "Wait, is this Hyadain?" So happy he got to do an official remix.

Thinking about that one fight in D:OS2 where you're on a tower and first you fight oil slimes that leave oil everywhere and then you fight fire slimes that ignite all the oil and unless you have a beefy PC it'll tank the framerate. Epic gaming moment.

The equipment scaling is trash, everything feels like an mmo « stat stick » that you have to replace every other level to stay competitive. Hopefully bg3 is more like the earlier bgs, where magic items are unique and cool and awesome

i enjoy collecting gear and looking for new things to keep up with the curve, but I can easily understand why it would be frustrating for many other people

i think they now have a setting you can turn on that will let you spend something (crafting materials or gold i guess? i haven't used it yet) to level up your gear, so you can keep using your favorite items instead of having to look for replacements once the stats start lagging behind too much

My favourite little monsters
Having every weapon/armor that's +1 or better be something important in BG1+2 be quite important, and having most things +2 and higher actually be named, with a story behind it (and be a huge boon despite that seemingly minor increase), was really great. When I picked up Dragon Age and weapons/armor were just +5% to hit or something, it was so boring.

I really appreciated how personal and how limited in scale the plot was for most of the game. Loved hanging around in Liberl and getting to know the setting and characters.

Definitely recommend to fans of CRPGs (Chill RPGs)

I finished up KOTOR and thought I'd try out Jade Empire, since I'm in an earlyish Bioware mood and boy did this game not age well from what I remembered at all. The combat in this game is loving dire. So hackneyed and half-assed. Don't even succeed in the blunt simplicity of it because even the basics are trash.

I can’t remember a ton from that game but I do recall being able to spam one of the sword techniques ad infinitum for basically the entire runtime.

Still wish someone would take another crack at a martial arts/Chinese derived RPG though.

Frankly I’d take any RPG that ditches the standard western tropes at this point.

I didn’t see the appeal to be honest, very linear, and the combat didn’t really click for me either. It was fun for a bit but then I got bored of fighting the same enemies and running in literal corridors from one enemy encounter to another. Not saying it’s bad and I realize everyone likes different things but I just find it weird how so many people praise it and act like it’s anywhere close to GOTY material.

I had the same reaction to Hi-Fi Rush that I had with Crypt of the Necrodancer which is to say the premise sounded amazing but the execution just wasn't as good as I imagined it'd be
