unless those boxes are looking like they got put in a cement mixer before they got to your home a couple dents should be expected tbh. you dont know what those things go through and unless retailers start charging like $20+ for just shipping packaging and the manpower needed to do delicate shipping I dunno what anyone expects. Especially from big box retailers that will never invest in something like that.

JERRY! HELLO!

Arrow is offering a replacement if they send back the damaged one, what more could they want? Not saying that if I got it in that condition I wouldn't want a new one, but if I was offered a swap, that's good enough for me.

I got my Ranown Westerns Criterion set yesterday and there was a little dent in a corner. Big whoop?

Dents are fine. I have picked up "dented" boxsets from Orbit and Diabolik for $20 cheaper than the ones not damaged, they look fine, or the dents add charm. The only ones I have issues with are Scream Factory and their flimsy cheap slipcovers. Those dents are lame and I return those discs. A big problem with physical media right now is that there's a large group of people who are buying the movies just to have the product, not to watch the movie. I'm not trying to gatekeep, but let's be real here: how many people out there aside from me actually like Terror at Tenkiller or My Demon Lover?

Yea I always try to keep a frame of mind that I'm buying movies because I love to watch movies, not to collect objects. I have about 700 movies and I've watched every single one of them, and the majority of them are favorites that I watch every few years at least.

I just got my official delayed shipping notification for The Live and Die in L.A. by the way, so yea it's probably gonna be a few weeks.

acceptable dings. I've also fixed dings like that before with those flat plastic pan cleaners with the soft edges and just lightly pushing pressure against the bump.

Nothing's better than postin' in the morning!

Yeah, as much fun as my quest to collect physicals of my and my partner's favorite movies has been, there have been multiple times where I have to pump the brakes and remember that I'm aiming to collect interesting versions of movies I already and would want to watch and rewatch again, not specific formats or JUST specific packaging, and not Any Old Movie. These things are meant to be loved, just like I loved my old Strong Bad Email DVDs growing up, or my copy of Holes.

I've had a wonderful time during this whole journey using a physical pickup as an excuse to watch something I had never seen before, like New York Ninja or The Man Who Fell To Earth, or to rewatch an old favorite in 4k, like Return Of The Living Dead. Hell, I found a bad anime Blu-Ray at a Goodwill for $3 and used the absurdity of the situation to watch it and enjoy every awful second. It's all about watching first, enjoying features, and admiring a collection - your collection of films you love that you can watch whenever you want without worrying about internet connections or browsing streaming apps, and you can show them to others easily too.

On the subject of physicals and collecting, I mentioned that two of my favorite films never got US physicals, so I was making custom cases for them to house DVD-Rs. Well, I finally did it! Spoilering because Antiporno's poster is :nws: but I'm really proud of these. I should get a set of clear cases for maximum effect.

I'm even proud of the spines and how they fit in with a few of my others.

I don't care for the physical packaging at all. The only reason I'm not a Binder Doofus is that I like combing through stacks of unorganized Blus when I don't know what to watch. It's the best way to get inspiration. Y'all would be horrified by my unorganized stacks.

you're gunna have to walk me through making my own covers. I'm still collecting stuff to work with for the Twin Peaks ones I'm working on and made these as temp (so whenever i'd see them id get annoyed and motivated to finish this project).

like what sorta paper should I use, do i need to find a specific printer type or is my home one good? got a template for different cover sizing (like season 3 is an 8 disc set, season 2 is a 6 disc set and season 1 is a 2 disc set).

Honestly I usually print them on the thicker glossy paper at Office Depot and use a standard Fiskars trimmer to get them down to size. These are sized specifically for Criterion (or PS4/5 in a pinch) cases, and I use Photoshop. It's pretty imprecise stuff and I'm nowhere near as good at the actual physical stuff as some folks on Etsy who make really cool customs but for ones I want to give the personal touch to I enjoy getting a little crafty.

The only reason I don't print at home is because my printer never seems to get sizes quite right or prints crooked or something, but I think for most people printing a CMYK file at 300 DPI and actual size would be fine. I use templates for sizing as well.

I'd love to up my game, especially with straighter cutting, so if others have better technique let me know.

When I finally get that set I'm gonna do the same! I also plan to also commission two custom cases just because I found a seller whose work I like and want to support them.

Network really has one of the worst DVD cases I've ever seen. It deserves the royal treatment.

if my copy of heavy metal, which was scanned at 4k, is any indication of what animation can look like at that resolution..yes

Obviously you're not getting much out of the increased resolution when it comes to most animation, but HDR definitely adds a ton of color depth.

most of it upscales well but there are textures and imperfections that you can actually see at a higher resolution that gets smoothed out otherwise..i kinda like seeing that sort of thing..they could also DNR the hell out of this release so I'm going to save my excitement until reviews hit

I just bought some a few weeks ago and it was worth it just to be able to put the movies on the same shelf as my other newer Godzilla movies and move the criterion “book” near my Kaiju figures as a display piece. Maybe one day Return/Biollante/vs ghidorah/vs mothra will be in print for blu rays again so I can have a complete movie set.

Watching a movie you love but have only seen in lower quality on BD or 4K really is something special. Finally broke out my Kino Lorber release of Zachariah I was able to get at a good price on eBay and it feels like a different film completely. Beautiful sets and colors, so many details! And the commentary track is surprisingly great, which I wasn't expecting from it being from two film critics/historians. Tons of interesting facts and stories and discussion of the film itself.

To the person who talked about isolating commentary tracks and using them as podcasts: your brain is huge and this movie is perfect for that.
