To be fair you don't see many pictures from that era in which people are wearing graphic tee cardi combos. I think most pop culture depictions (contemporary and modern) had men wearing suits to the park and suits to bed. No poo poo three piece sleepwear.

T-shirts did exist, but they certainly didn't seem common in the face or near ubiquitous shirts and slacks. Found a men's leisurewear catalogue from 1948 and it had just one person who wasn't in a shirt  But I also found this one from 1920  That original photo just found some tragically hip guy who mixed a t-shirt with an open cardigan.
