I figured Star Destroyers have boarding parties so the crew numbers are inflated.

Also their turbo lasers are all manned units so there's that.

Makes sense to me. The Empire relies on droid labor for many tasks, so they know droids are unreliable little shits. The more automated systems you put in your ship, the closer it gets to becoming a giant droid.

No troop ships attacked Hoth. That ground force and attendant walkers were all organic forces within each star destroyer.

Maybe it's a jobs program. The ship doesn't need 37,000 people. The empire doesn't need 37,000 soldiers on that ship.

What the Empire needs is for every young man who isn't gainfully employed to be recruited into the military to keep him out of trouble. In a deleted scene Luke and Biggs worry about being drafted.

Exploration is ill-advised.
While sci-fi numbers are always lol, Star Destroyers are basically battleships plus carriers, designed to be mobile force projection and carry things like AT-ATs and TIE squadrons. Having basically a mobile garrison of troops makes sense, not to mention support and service crew for them.

I was already disconcerted by that but the whole section you spoilered kept me feeling that way for a long long time. The ending was fairly disturbing. I think the writers wanted to wrap it up in a single movie and not worry about budget.

If she got loose and slept with some other guy that would already be bad as they'd have to find her and catch her plus deal with the dad, but when she swaps sexes and kills the lead and the... offspring? gets sold to the company shuts down any mystery of what would happen if she/he got out or possible sequel leads.

Good movie but there's a ton of what the gently caress and the ending is gonna stick with you and not in a good way.

according to tvtropes, the ending actually made the actress who played the female scientist stop acting entirely.

Species was similar but at least that movie didn't end with such a bad note. Yeah the rat poo poo went nowhere and could have and should have been cut, but Sil was cool and everything in the movie was pretty cool. I remember seeing it in theaters and cracking up when the empath saw a bedroom full of blood splatter and goes, "Something bad happened here."

In terms of AI and ships, I am always reminded of Transformers Prime, a rather underrated transformers cartoon, where the Decepticon warship becomes sentient; it takes no poo poo from Megatron and pretty much knocks all the Cons unconscious so it can do what it wants without being yelled at, or beaten, or threatened. I imagine a sentient ship stocked with Stormtroopers would do something similar.

I think there was a star wars expanded universe story where IG-88 or some other assassin droid thing figured he needed to be the baddest droid in the universe, so he comes up with a plan to sneak onto the death star and upload himself to its hardware. He succeeds, too, right before Luke blows it to hell.

Like any weapon made by fascists, they're about intimidation first, utility second. A distant second*.

Having a kilometre long ship park itself right over a capital city with not only thousands of troops, but thousands of bureaucrats ready to audit your planet's finances while blockading the entire world and the whole shebang run by officers only interested in backstabbing each other to move up the ranks even if it means they burn your world to the ground would be pretty terrifying.

But, yes, sci-fi numbers never make sense. Distance, speed, people, writers give no shits and know even less.

I'm picturing the AI sparing the maintenance crew just because they were nice to it.

Also funny thing is while it's not pointed out in the show, the loosely related Fall Of Cybertron game gives a ready reason why the Nemesis can so easily turn sentient and brutal: it used to be Trypticon, forcibly reformatted and mode-locked.

You might enjoy the book series Ancillary Justice, a revenge opera starring a murdered AI warship. It's intelligence was distributed across thousands of lobotomized prisoners of war, and a single talking corpse survived. Now it's alone against the fascist empire that built it, stranded on the worlds it helped conquer.
