I played it before, honestly I didn't really like it. Didn't feel very good, and what isn't immediately clear is that it is wave based. So it's just you jumping around the same room for the whole level, iirc. Which I'm not a fan of.

A lot of the negative reviews basically say the same thing; that it's just Xeno 1 with overhauled engine/graphics. I'm gonna wait until it comes out of EA to see if I want to buy it or not, because as much as I love the original xcom game, I think I've probably squeezed as much value out of it as I can.

Same - even if it's just more tech, more aliens, more vehicles, that would be enough for me to get it, but if it's the same game, but looks nicer and plays better, I can't see the justification

It's a bit different, it's on its own engine now rather than the diner dash engine, so a lot of the problems the old game had with that are gone. I remember reading somewhere that they couldn't even modify the original engine because they didn't have the source. I suspect a lot of the delay was just they completely underestimated how much work it actually was to rebuild the whole thing and then got sidetracked in scope creep. (The original estimate for release was several years ago, even)

There's a lot of QOL stuff, some new/different aliens as well as human agents controlled by aliens (the cleaners), and some new mission types. I just started with it but there's missions where you have to raid a cleaner base and you have several turns to retrieve enough intel before new waves of guys spawn. It's still following that old x-com formula so it's not going to stray too far from that but that's basically all I've ever wanted. I didn't play a ton of the original because I got frustrated with the engine issues, but I'm really enjoying this one so far though.

However, it's still way in early access, I've seen some numbers thrown around but only like 75% of the content is done? Like it's missing a bunch of story and content, so if you're on the fence then definitely wait.

edit: had it wrong, they're on Unity now. They apparently got stuck on Diner Dash code for Xenonauts 1 because of an early employee who left and then just powered through it, even though it was basically abandoned by the creator at that point.

I'm liking XN2 a lot after few hours, as a long-time veteran of X-Com. It's definitely not a revolutionary change or massive improvement but it just feels so much cleaner, snappier, and with a streamlined UI that has everything just where you need it to be. It's doing an absolutely excellent job of having me consider exacty how I should tackle each situation, whether I should bait the enemy with my MARS, pop smoke for cover, try and throw a flashbang at them, take a long-range shot with a sniper, etc.. If you have XN1 then it's probably worth waiting on to see how the content gets fleshed out over the next nine months (The estimated time to release, though they freely say it could be longer), unless you're a subgenre fanatic like me. There are plenty of placeholders in flavor text and so on, but the core gameplay seems rock solid and it's so much smoother than the original.

Spewing insults, pissing off all your neighbors, betraying your allies, backing out of treaties and accords, and generally screwing over the global environment?
ALL PART OF MY BRILLIANT STRATEGY!
Just as long as it removes that extremely unfun stage of Xenonauts 1 where the psychic enemies showed up, and it turned out they didn't need LoS to target your guys, so every round was a game of "oh boy is someone getting mind controlled and blasting their buddy in the back?" That was the only part of that game I disliked.

I also know that they pulled back on some changes because despite a vocal part of the playerbase requesting them, when actually put into effect, said changes turned out to just not be fun, like some of the planned changes to the air intercept mechanic.

I watched some people play it and the balance is completely rear end. You have to metagame in the very first level and ignore everything the tutorial says cause you will end up in a death spiral otherwise. Seems very overtuned atm.

Not sure what you watched but there isn't room to do much more as roughly following the tutorial in the first mission. There are different ways to play this game too, if you play "story" citizens, technology and laws won't transfer between chapters so no idea what the "death spiral" should be.

Its very linear in that way even, at least in the first of two parts the campaign is split into.

I never get that far in XN1. I'm just hoping the aliens can no longer camp in their flying saucer, opening the door at the start of their turn, shooting out without triggering overwatch, and then closing it again. Initial impressions are good though, it does clunk a lot less now, and it's nice to be able to throw grenades more than a handful of spaces.

I think the story is supposed to be a prequel or something to Heroes V, but it's been a long time and I don't remember. It has the same factions at the very least. It is not anything like HoMM, though, and even less like a mainline MM game. It is best described as a Match-3 SRPG, though pretty light on the strategy part and heavier on the tactics part. Mostly it's a puzzle game, and it's really fun. There's a lot of things that go into it as you add different kinds of units from across the factions (which all play very differently), but at the core you are randomly given a set of units every turn that are color-coded, and you match them vertically to attack and horizontally to block. The game is all about setting up combos of matches to get extra moves, and then also setting your big units to attack in a future turn and keeping them alive until they do so.
