we had those where i used to live but they had to be run as "tours" where the person steering and braking wasn't part of the group. they shut them down either because the booze was too accessible to the sober one or because the people pedaling were deemed operators of the vehicle as well. i think they carved out a loophole and brought them back after i left, which is great because they are fun as hell

Sometimes I ride my BMX home after the bar with a little buzz on; the streets are usually empty at that time and I get to rip it a little bit.

About ten years ago when I had just got back from college and was partying a lot with my hometown friends I used to ride my road bike home completely ripped. I stopped when one morning I went back out to the bike and the entire derailleur assembly was bent and contorted. Oddly, the rest of the bike was fine, and I checked myself up and down for bruises/scrapes and found nothing. I think what happened was that I stopped for a slice of pizza and some driver I had pissed off followed me and kicked the poo poo out of my gearset while I was in the pizza shop, so I walked the bike the ~1 block home.

Ensign Expendable is right though - the danger of it aside (bikes are near the bottom of the gradient of danger even when you introduce alcohol, but they're still on it), the pigs in the TPS and the sycophants in the media would LOVE to run a story about a drunk belligerent cyclist, and idiots would eat it up.

Absolutely insane behavior. The story doesn't even make sense.

quote:

A 32-year-old Hull man who became the victim of a road rage incident said Thursday he had put his gun away not long before he was attacked.

“I happened to take my gun off about two hours earlier. I never want to shoot anybody, but if you are going to come from behind and sneak up on me, I’m going to hit you with something,” he told the Banner-Herald.

The road rage incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday along U.S. Highway 29 near Hull Road in east Athens. The victim said another vehicle pulled in front of him while it was traveling "really slow."

“Instead of me rear ending it, I had to go around it,” he said, explaining he went into a lane on the right side of the vehicle.

The victim said he stopped at a red light and the other vehicle came up behind him.

“I heard something hit the car. I got out to look because it sounded heavy and it was a McDonald’s cup full of milkshake,” he said. The passenger in the other vehicle stepped out and said, “You wanna go.”

As he returned to his vehicle, to avoid a confrontation, the victim said his alleged attacker grabbed him from behind and started punching him in the stomach.

The victim said he reached for the area under his seat where he placed his gun and his attacker left, but stopped to say “he didn’t appreciate me passing him on the righthand side like that."

The alleged attacker then left. The victim called Athens-Clarke police, who responded and made a report on the assault

The victim said he thought about the situation and had he used his gun, he probably would have shot the attacker in the leg.

“It had hollow points (bullets) and that wouldn’t look too good,” he said.

The police report notes that the victim will press charges if the attacker can be identified.

the loophole in at least one place I lived is they disconnected the pedals of the revelers from anything so that they couldnt in any way be seen as contributing toward driving

You see, normally when you're going faster than the car in front of you, you just smash into them. I'm a little wacky and go around instead. It really pisses off some people. They throw things at me. And then when I try to avoid a confrontation, I walk back to my car. Why was I out of my car? Not important. I was trying to avoid a fight. BTW I will shoot you in the leg with hollowpoint bullets that leave huge holes. I didn't do anything wrong and I'm the victim here.

"We might let you out eventually but no promises" seems pretty reasonable sentencing for murdering a guy in front of his family because you were frustrated about traffic.

Free healthcare too, but bad outcomes and shortened life expectancy. Truly, socialism does not work.

Went for a bike ride today and nearly got hit by two cars, one coming out of a side street and one turning through the bike lane. Another cyclist caught up to me and said man they nearly clobbered you and I said I loving hate cars

This is not true. I've biked home blackout drunk wayyyy too many times in my life. My bike and I always made it home safe undamaged so I must be good at it at least. Thinking back on it it's a bit scary for what could have happened to me and I don't bike or get that drunk anymore, but it's definitely not a limiting factor.

EPA penalizes Fairbanks company $117,000 for installing ‘defeat devices’ | US EPA

www.epa.gov posted:

SEATTLE (July 21, 2023) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that Doyon Associated, LLC, located in Fairbanks, Alaska, will pay a fine of $117,000 for violations of the Clean Air Act.

Doyon Associated, LLC, is accused of installing 55 defeat devices and tampering with 28 heavy duty motor vehicles between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2019. EPA estimates that tampering with one heavy duty motor vehicle is equivalent to putting approximately 280 new vehicles on the road.

The company has since retrofitted the vehicles with the required emission control systems. Additional details can be found in the Consent Agreement and Final Order

“The manufacture, sale and installation of defeat devices is against the law” said EPA Region 10 Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Director Ed Kowalski. “By installing devices that defeat the manufacturer-installed air emissions control systems, the company bypassed a system designed to protect the public’s health.”

This action is part of a national Stopping Aftermarket Defeat Devices for Vehicles and Engines initiative. The practice of tampering with vehicles by installing defeat devices can enable large emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter which contribute to serious health problems and have harmful effects on sensitive ecosystems

If you suspect someone is manufacturing, selling or installing illegal defeat devices, or tampering with emissions controls, report it via email to tampering@epa.gov.
EPA penalizes Oregon company over $148,000 for installing ‘defeat devices’ | US EPA

www.epa.gov posted:

SEATTLE (July 21, 2023) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that Pure Addiction Diesel Performance L.L.C. of Hillsboro, Oregon, will pay a $148,733 penalty for violations of the Clean Air Act.

Between Jan. 1, 2019, and April 27, 2021, EPA found that Pure Addiction Diesel Performance L.L.C. sold at least 351 defeat devices and removed emission control systems from at least 139 motor vehicles. EPA estimates that tampering with one heavy duty motor vehicle is equivalent to putting approximately 280 new vehicles on the road.

The penalty amount was reduced based on the company’s inability to pay a higher penalty and continue in business. Additional details can be found in the Consent Agreement and Final Order
