yeah the first is the only one that I'd call an actual good movie (good, not great) but there's something about them that I find mindlessly entertaining. Kind of like the Resident Evil movies.

Also just quotable in general.

This tune plus the end credits made me think immediately that it was always intended to be a TV mini, and that these were the opening or closing credits of the show.

Diminishing returns. The second one is basically the first one but less tense since you already know the deal. The third one is just weird, they swung for the fences on that one and for me it didn't work at all.

PKMN Trainer Red

Third one is absolutely dire. Someone on the team was like, 'You know, I think people are watching our horror series for the deep lore,' and then they made a whole movie about deep lore you could not give half of a poo poo about.

They both aren’t great. Gets way too bogged down into lore, which IMO wasn’t why the first one worked. Not really enough juice in that series to warrant 3 movies. But if you really liked the first one like I did, they are worth checking out. I certainly didn’t regret finishing off the series. I think I liked the 3rd one better than the 2nd.

When i was on vacation in Spain i was looking for some old school horror on Netflix (only streaming i have) to watch, leaving me a solid 3 options or so:

Demoni; which i already seen and is cool

Tenebrae; grew on me as it went on and ultimately had a lot of things going for it. Argento consistently takes me out of movies with the Goblin soundtracks that i think are rad as hell but imho don't necessarily fit the scenes. I don't have this problem when it happens in Fulci's movies, i think because those are a bit more outlandish to begin with. Not sure. Anyway fun movie with the dog chase being a highlight for me. This was the Unsane version so it was probably cut here and there but was still plenty gory.

Then i found a little black and white flick called

The Face at the Window from 1939

Leading me to discover an actor known at the time for playing over the top villains called...

TOD SLAUGHTER

This was kind of a treat in that it was basically a thriller story about a poor bank teller getting set up for murder by our evil rich bad guy who is the actual killer. But! the guy would first startle you into fearful paralysis by showing you his malformed cousin's wolfman-like face looking thru your window and doing a wolf howl.
While a bunch of incompetent 1880's French police bumble about in long capes and hats, believing any old bullshit anyone says, our protagonist needs to seek the help of his old friend crazy scientist who is working on reviving people with electricity ( so they can write down who killed them of course )

Slow, silly and funny-ish but i enjoyed it quite a bit.

Didn't help in the third one that they had a billionaire as the heroic protagonist fighting the evil. Which was the last thing I wanted to see in Trump's America.

And someone believes there's enough juice left in the franchise for a prequel.

I think people have it reversed though. 2 is the one that’s all weird and lorey. I remember three being a much more straightforward return to the original scares.
