People use risers like this if they don't want to raise their desks typically https://www.amazon.com/VIVO-Converter-Adjustable-Workstation-DESK-V042KB/dp/B09XVQ9YJN/

Now, there are other issues with that approach beyond aesthetics such as the vibration of slamming fingers on a keyboard can keep moving one's monitor around and even cause headaches. But a properly solid, heavy lift / riser can do the job of cushioning one's clumsy goon fingers against the goon keyboard and mouse. I am not actually envisioning a goon but a previous boss who was absolutely not a goon but certainly hit his keyboard super hard and kept bumping his monitor around all the time. Even though he used his MacBook Pro's keyboard typically I could hear him typing halfway across the office.

So this seems like the place to ask, maybe.

My desktop is basically a space heater. i7-8700k @ 5GHz, 3080 whatever OC'd out of the box. I want to put it in the basement, directly underneath my office, and just run cables up through the wall or something.

What's the best way to go about that and make it clean? Wall plate with all the jacks? Where can I find that? I'm running displayport @ 144Hz so I don't think an extension box or usb-c extender will work.

edit: I think some sort of modular wall plate would be best. I need displayport, 3.5mm audio, and a bunch of USB

Linus from LinusTechTips has a bunch of videos on his home setup which does more or less that using Thunderbolt over fiber. It's not simple, it's not cheap, and it has occasional weird quirks that he turns in to money via Youtube but you will just turn in to annoyance.

Alternatively you could use fiber extension cables for both USB and DisplayPort separately (if your hardware supports it HDMI 2.1 might be easier to get fiber cables for than DP) and have less quirks to deal with at the cost of more independent cables to run.

Wall plates probably won't be a viable option, at least for the high speed connections like DP and USB-C, but there are passthrough plates designed to allow any arbitrary cable to cleanly pass through the wall which would work fine as long as you're not totally fixed on the idea of connectors on the wall. Audio and other low bandwidth connections are of course pretty straightforward.

It wouldn't even be a 2 meter run, I would put it on a shelf close to the ceiling literally right under my desk in the basement. DP 3440x1440 @ 144 should be fine at that length without any amps or anything, I just don't want a bunch of wires coming up through a hole in my floor.

I have one because my computer used to be on the ground and my toddler used to press the power button while I was teaching on zoom.

Even though my computer is now on my desk it’s really convenient.

Also, my case never had a hard drive LED so I wired the power LED to be the hard drive LED.

the easiest way, if money is no object, is to replace the monitors as a lot of them have KVM functionality built in now, and even a lot of the ones that don't will still have multiple inputs and USBC charging. You could also look at logitech peripherals that let you save 1-3 devices directly to the mouse/kb. Otherwise you're looking at a dedicated KVM box which may or may not play nice with Apple Silicon.

I've had a fuckton of headaches with various laptop docks and even docks "made for mac", and at the end of the day this setup (plugging poo poo straight into the displays, KB+mouse either going through one of the displays or wirelessly paired with both computers) has been the most workable and painless for me. I have two 4K Dell displays from 2021 connected both to my PC and my Macbook Pro.

Well, the Amazon algorithm got me and I replaced my third monitor, but I am actually extremely happy with it..

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C5CX2KH4?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

Looks like this is a design sold by a bunch of companies, $99 is a great price though. My old display wasn't really meant to fit under existing monitors, the ports were messy, the display wasn't great, it was fine for what I used it for, mostly iMessage, weather radar, whatnot, but it wasn't great.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078K1HXQW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Despite saying it is a 1920 x 1080 display, I doubt it.

New one is 12.3 inches, but in an ultrawide 1920 x 860, I believe the specs. Also the screen quality is great, I wish the brightness was a little higher but it's fine. Accepts HDMI in as well as video and power over a single USB-C connection. Touch screen and speakers, the speakers are, not good, but it's $100. I would have been happier if they went with a smaller form factor without speakers though. I guess a nice thing is the speakers and touch screen are USB C as well, so with my setup I have USB C to A for the touchscreen/speakers, HDMI for video and USB C for power. It looks like it powers fine just over USB C to A on my Mac Mini, but I won't want it drawing so much power it.

I think this would be a great display for a headless home server.

For a headless home server, as in currently, not after you bought the display. Like, if the reason for it being headless was less about a desire to completely remotely administrate it and more about I won't want to put a 15" HD display in my wiring closet.

My home server is headless. I do all my administration via terminal but I have a monitor in there because you will always end up needing local access at some point. It's a 10 year old lcd and I've actually been thinking of getting a tiny screen like that because the current one is ugly and too big for something that gets used maybe once a year or less.

So thanks for that link!

I received the kvm switch that was suggested here. Plugged everything in and it worked, but I noticed a few flaws. The biggest was that it could only support so high of a refresh rate, and it didn’t play nicely with the hub I used for my work laptop. To get it to work with my laptop I would need to switch out the hub for a dongle, and buy a DisplayPort to thunderbolt cable/converter, and have 2 cables coming out of my work/personal laptops rather than 1.

It also would potentially produce audio issues with my microphone setup.

Ultimately decided I’ll just return it. Looking at my cables, I was able to figure out how to switch everything from one computer to the other through 4 clicks: once on each monitor, once on my keyboard, and once on my mouse. This way I don’t hinder performance on the gaming pc I just spent my entire bonus on. It’s not as nice as hitting one button and everything swaps instantly, but it’s not as much of a headache when I think about all the compatibility issues.

Test if you can use ControlMyMonitor or similar software to switch the inputs of your monitors, that could save some clicking. I believe some people have setup a system where they use a switch to swap the mouse and keyboard between computers, the computers detect the swap and then automatically change the monitor inputs.

I ended up not going for one of those because it seemed like a good one that supports a high refresh rate was stupid expensive? Either way you don't need that if your monitor has multiple inputs.

I have both my monitors connected to my pc and laptop dock. Both monitors have 2 inputs. I have the input selection on the monitors set to auto. When I turn off my pc and open my laptop the monitors switch to those inputs.

If you want both of them on for some reason just turn on the one you want the displays on first. As long as the display port currently active is being used it won't swap over. At least with my monitors.

I do have a cheap usb switch with a button to swap all my peripherals to whichever computer I'm using

I have an m1 Mac and last I checked none of those monitor control apps worked unfortunately but luckily you don't really need it if you just set the displays to auto

OP if you’re down for two button clicks, you can get a usb-c switcher/hub and swap the inputs on your monitor when you switch machine. I decided on that cheap rear end option because a kvm switch that can handle 144hz or 4k was way too expensive to justify saving me like 10 seconds a day switching monitor inputs

I thought about it, but with the exception of the mouse and keyboard, the other peripherals I use may see some noticeable performance issues, especially since my macbook is already connected through a hub. So the line would be something like

PC<---USB switch--->HUB--->macbook

All to save 1 additional button click.

I'll play around with this current setup, see if it needs any work, but in the meantime it seems to be doing well.

It’s not as elegant as a button, but you can probably just swap the usb-c hub connection from laptop to pc.

at some point i ended up cutting out my usb switcher because it was just about as easy to swap the cable as to hit a button with fewer cables and complications. Then i change monitor input (at this point i just move monitor arms around) and push a button on my mouse.

I found that good enough was good enough for this problem

Does anyone have advice on the best way to do two Edifer R1280 bookshelf speakers with two monitors, a 34" ultrawide and a vertical 27?, potentially also with a macbook (Work and Personal computers share the ultrawide)

I obviously don't want them behind a screen, and i want them at head height, so I'm thinking I need two risers, but it seems akward that i'd have to do:

pre:
****
****[SS]*************[SS]*******
*27*[SS]*****34"*****[SS]**MAC**
**** ************* *******
****
(S is speaker)

and jam the one speaker in between the two monitors like that? The mac I may run closed, since it's attached to a monitor and can be woken up via keyboard.

Currently I have both speakers behind the 34 Ultrawide with their tops slightly cut off and not angled at me, which feels goofy at best.

tl;dr: how should i place bookshelf speakers with a 27" Vertical + 34" Ultrawide monitor setup?
