I think a fair number of people actually hate life, so to them to think that they’re suffering being unhappy now and there’s no possible payoff later (retirement, kids move out, finally feel fulfilled, whatever) seems unbearable

https://fortune.com/2023/07/21/northeast-floods-destroys-crops-farming/

quote:

Storms dumped up to two months’ worth of rain over a couple of days in parts of the region, surpassing the amount that fell when Tropical Storm Irene blew through in 2011, causing major flooding. Officials have called last week’s flooding Vermont’s worst natural disaster since floods in 1927.

Atmospheric scientists say floods occurring in different parts of the world are fueled by climate change, with storms forming in a warmer atmosphere, making extreme rainfall more frequent. The additional warming scientists predict is coming will only make it worse.

..................

“This is smack dab in the middle of the growing season so anything that was ready to harvest was pulled. Whatever was left was lost,” Guild said. “There were cabbages just floating around in the flood.”

All seven farms were washed out. Losses will likely run higher than Irene, where losses tallied about $750,000, she said.

..............

As of Friday, about 200 Vermont farmers had reported more than 9,400 acres (3,804 hectares) in crop damage, Tebbetts said. He added that, as the state waits to hear on a requested flood-related disaster declaration from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it’s been granted a different one following a late-season frost that wiped out vineyards and orchards in May.

In Massachusetts, at least 75 farms have been hurt by flooding, with about 2,000 acres (809 hectares) in crop losses at a minimum value of $15 million, according to the state Department of Agricultural Resources. That number is expected to climb as more damage is assessed and longer-term impacts set in.

Damaged farms ranged from community farms to a farm with 300 acres (121 hectares) of potatoes that were a total loss just weeks before harvest to a 230-member “community supported agriculture” farm only five weeks into a 30-week program.

warning for parts in there about animal/livestock losses.

and yeah as bad as the climate situation is the political one is worse so things are sliding to poo poo sooner rather than later anyway. enjoy what you can while you can.

Very interesting read, I agree with a lot of what he said. I don't get the hate for renewable power, but in the last 15 years there have been a lot of advances in wind and solar and the prices of both have come down faster than the most optimistic projections. Coupled with advances in battery technology and storage, it has to be part of todays solution. Did he still consider renewable energy to be an empty promise up to his dying day or did he come around?

I do agree that we need more technology, not less and that nuclear power has to be central to that. Back in the late 2000's I remember a lot of talk about carbon offsets and people thinking you could pay someone in Central America :10bux: to plant a tree and that meant you could fly to Europe guilt free. It should have been obvious that it was the same thing as a 16th century Catholic indulgence, this is now consensus view. His politics were confusing and seems to have evolved from socialist to euro skeptic, but I agree we are not going to escape market forces but this is not the same thing as this unregulated late stage capitalism / oligarchy that we have today.

I guess the good news is we are now much closer to artificial photosynthesis and there is always the soylent green route, not this but rather the OG version from the 1973 movie.

But real question: How did 2008 turn into 15 years ago. How does that happen?

the only “solution” (there isn’t any, it’s all too late) would be to stop making massive amounts of useless poo poo and shipping it around everywhere. stop drilling stop building cars stop stop stop. for that to work people would need to be able to access the resources that already exist so we can pivot to mitigating food crop loss and water access, preparing for catastrophic events and rapid climate change. but nah. too hard. Americans can’t even be asked to wear a face mask to save themselves from brain damage or the very least prevent the vulnerable from contracting a still pandemicing disease. guess what. more of those are coming too. thanks Exxon!

You know and I know that this won't happen. It really is too late. Probably the only real solution would be to build a time machine and go back to the 1950s when this consumerist, extractive model where everyone could have a car and a big backyard, where every problem in agriculture could be solved by spraying something, and better living through chemistry was taking root. It would have been much easier to solve the problem if our built infrastructure still looked like 1950 and all the low density sprawl, car dependent sprawl had never been built. But someone from 2023 traveling back in time demanding to see the president trying to deliver an important message would have been immediately committed to the insane asylum. Even if they were believed, telling someone saying that the Dow Jones would be at 35,000 and it would come with unimagined advances in computing, communications and wealth and the bill for all of this wouldn't need to be paid until the very youngest of their world had grown old, they would have seen this as amazing news.

I never hear the question asked the opposite way to Christian Conservatives "if you do fear God and you do think that there are eternal consequences for your actions in this life, why are you OK with taking medical care from poor people, throwing babies in cages when their parents bring them across an arbitrary manmade line, and in Texas anyway taking away water breaks for workers toiling outdoors in deadly heat?"
