I picked up a MagicTrackpad the other day to use at my docked setup. It’s nice but the sensitivity is a bit low for my liking. However at a glance it seems like you can’t set the sensitivity for it independently of the built in trackpad for the laptop. Am I missing something or is this a think like mouse scrolling where you either have to deal with it or pay money for a third party solution?

I promise I’m not getting commission; Linear Mouse will let you fiddle with the settings per device and it’s free.

BetterTouchTool can also do this, along a crazy amount of customization across all input devices (keyboard, mouse, trackpad, stream deck, touchbar, notch). I setup three finger gestures to swipe between, open, and close tabs across my browsers and finder:

Oh! I already have BTT installed and making my goddamn mouse scroll wheel work the way the lord intended. May as well use what I already have, thanks for the heads up. I’ve got a page or two on how to actually use it bookmarked and have been meaning to go read up on it at some point here.

My work/life separation is Chrome for work and Safari (or more generally, my iPad/iPhone) for non-work things. I'm not exactly thrilled with Chrome, so thanks for giving me something to play with on a Friday afternoon!

Does anyone else use Jump Desktop on a Windows machine to remote into a Mac environment? If so, is there a keyboard shortcut or similar to pop out of the Mac window when it’s full screened? Feels like there’s probably a better way then moving the pointer to the top of the screen, waiting for the overlay and hitting the toggle button.

E: ah, enabling the Windows shortcuts lets me hit the win-key to get out, perfect.

I do. I get around this by putting the VNC session in a virtual desktop and then ctrl+win+left/right between them.

In macOS is there any way to apply an equalizer or even just treble/bass adjustments to the audio output? The only thing I can find relates to audio from the Music app only. I have an M1 iMac and I can't stand the built in sound, it seems like there are layers of processing added to the sound to make it sound more "full" but it just ends up making everything sound compressed and unpleasant. Alternatively I wish I could turn off that processing if it is there.

Also, is there any way to speed up OS animations like minimizing, maximizing, pop up prompts, etc, other than disabling animations and movement? I've found some terminal command lines online but nothing seems to actually work.

Is there a way to change the default search engine in Arc? I've been using duck duck go for so long it's jarring to have google back in my search.

and if you click 'Search Settings...' in that menu you can get to all the under the hood standard Chromium settings :ssh:

Picked up a MacBook Air M2 16/512 for student pricing. Is Apple Care worth it on the laptops or should I use the $150 gift card on a case or something?

I got the AppleCare because I plan to buy a house any day now and having to fork out $$$$ on a laptop in a pinch would gently caress with that.

Do you have kids or plan on taking it out the house? Then, consider getting it.

oh, my, god. Becky, look at her bitrate.
I'm having a weird issue with crashing. Almost every single time it's when photoshop is open, the entire system just becomes unresponsive (but the audio of a video will continue playing), then eventually black screen, then it restarts.

It gives me an error report after; any idea what's going on here? Adobe being adobe?

Lucid chart just sent an email stating they’re going to stop allowing use of the iOS(bye bye iPad and pencil) app for individual subscriptions this August and only allow it for enterprise or team accounts. They just forced me to buy Visio.

Visio for iOS is view only, you could modify using visio for web but it's not going to be a fun experience on a tablet.

It's a straight faced cash grab by them. I'll be fine but that was not what I wanted to read first thing Monday morning.

I got you.
Have an annoying but esoteric issue that's being thoroughly ungooglable and that I can't narrow down definitively to one help thread so let's ask the macOS thread and see what happens.

YouTube seems to randomly jump ahead by a few minutes whenever I unpause a video. The amount of time seems to be random but always between 1-10 minutes or so. It happens regardless of if I press the given play button in the toolbar, press the play/pause button on my keyboard, click inside the video frame, or press the space bar. It happens regardless of any variation in the state of the video I've tried, including position in the video, resolution, theater mode etc, or airplay status. It also happens whether using YouTube's normal video player or something like Vinegar. Where do I even start with this?

I definitely don't have an answer, but some other troubleshooting suggestions: have you tried a different browser? And does it still do it if you're logged out of your YouTube account? Or if you're logged into your Mac as a different / guest user? After you've disabled all your Safari extensions (assuming this is in Safari)?

Maybe enable Keyboard Viewer and make sure that something isn't silently sending keyboard commands??

Safari. Besides 1Password I'm running 1Blocker (which has Youtube-specific functionality, I think) and Vinegar (which is literally an extension for Youtube). I was having this issue before installing Vinegar and it still happens if Vinegar is disabled. It also still happens if all the 1Blocker extensions are disabled). It doesn't happen in Firefox. I'm not sure what Safari settings are relevant but I haven't generally gone deep on them. I haven't turned on block javascript for instance.

Incredibly, this has fixed the issue, and in the three minutes of testing done it has not reoccurred since signing back in again. Thanks but also what the gently caress?

I’m having a weird issue with my work laptop that I don’t get. I’ll be connected to wifi fine on Friday, shut down my laptop and Monday morning the machine connects to wifi gets a valid ip address but doesn’t work for any network activity. I have to forget the SSID, reboot, and then wifi will work. Anyone seen similar issues? My first guess is it’s zscaler as that seems to be the cause of most issues.

Arc browser gesture suggestion:

If you use BetterTouchTool, setup four finger gesture swiping left and right to switch between your different spaces by binding Option + ⌘ + ⬅️/➡️ only for Arc Browser, and now you can swipe anywhere within Arc and switch between spaces.

Here are all my BTT gestures for Arc (and most other browsers):

No judgement zone networking question!

So we recently upgraded our internet at work. Switching from Cable to Fiber.

The rest of the infracstructure that serves up everything (hardware firewall, switches, wifi APs) did not change and basically every device experienced no noticeable side effects when the internet came back up.

EXCEPT Macs connected to our Wifi.

They can connect to the internet and surf just fine. But they can't connect to any non mac device they could before (Printers and our NAS) through the wifi.

All of the PCs, hardwired and on wifi, can continue to connect to those devices just fine.

No IPs have changed for the Printers and NAS.

Thanks Ants

Did your new ISP provide you with IPv6 and your firewall was previously configured to use IPv6 where available so is now announcing IPv6 prefixes into your network?

Thinks It's All Real
I can't figure out the answer to this question.

So in the Find My app you have the People / Devices / Items tabs. With Family Sharing setup, it looks like in the Devices tab I can see all my family's devices and the location of them all. How can I prevent this from happening? I'd much prefer to have full control over who can see my location under the People tab, and turn it off when I want to. And if I understand it right... I can stop sharing my location under the Me tab, but my family can still see where my phone is under the Devices tab.

Basically I don't care if my wife has access, but I want to prevent my kid from having access to that information. Also, even though the "erase this device" requires my Apple ID password, I feel weird about that option even being on someone else's phone for my Mac and Phone.

i don’t think you understand this right. if you stop sharing your location with someone you also stop sharing the location of your devices. see the text at the top of Settings > Apple ID > Family Sharing > Location Sharing. but, as to the second half, they will still be able to see which devices are associated with your Apple ID, and have the “Erase this Device” option for them, but that requires your Apple ID password as you say, so is relatively harmless. if they do know that then they could just directly log in as you on icloud.com and do whatever they like, anyway

Is there a menu bar app or similar that can show you what, if any, badges are on your dock applications? I have to use Do not Disturb mode when sharing my screen but wouldn’t mind seeing an indicator so I can at least check on my second monitor sometimes.

I could move my dock to an inconvenient monitor but would rather use it where I always have, just hidden. I really rely on seeing an unread message badge to not accidentally ignore something important.

The notification center doesn’t really tell me anything passively.

Hi, I have a problem that's been plaguing me for the past three days. If this isn't the correct thread please feel free to point me to the right direction because i'm frankly not sure whether i can salvage it

TLDR: I cannot install osx on my parents' 14 year old Mac

I found out that my parents have an old 2009 mac hidden in their spare room. I had assumed they had thrown it away, but it's still in workable condition. Its hard disk died once many years back, probably 2013, but it got replaced and fixed. Based on a search of its EMC no. 2308, this is the model in question:

I turned it on and it's of course extremely slow, and I quickly backed up the documents and pictures/videos folders. It was last turned on in 2018. Discussing with them, we thought it would be a good thing to place in the kitchen so they can have it as a youtube / media player and also to watch their alarm bell CCTV.

I determined that a reformat and reinstall would be the easiest way moving forward, which was my first mistake. I reformatted it by restarting into disk utility and erasing the whole MACINTOSH-HD hard disk.

WHAT I HAVE SINCE ATTEMPTED:

1. I cannot reinstall OSX the usual way:

When I tried to install High Sierra (the only option available), this happened:

2. I turned on the wi-fi and it still didn't work:

I turned on the wi-fi, and the same error occurs. I restarted and turn the wi-fi on first, but this still happens.

3. I try to download High Sierra from Apple's website:

Going online, I found that I can create a bootable installer into a USB stick.

https://support.apple.com/en-my/HT201372

This requires downloading High Sierra's installer into another mac. My parents have a 2021 Mac with these specs:

I followed the instructions here: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT211683 to download High Sierra at macappstores://apps.apple.com/app/macos-high-sierra/id1246284741?mt=12 .

This doesn't work on the mac. It plain out says in the app store the 2021 Mac does not satisfy the requirements of High Sierra.

Not a big deal. I opened the website on my windows laptop and download the DMG file.

The DMG file opens to a PKG file.

You need the APP file in order to build the bootable USB (see here).

The PKG file cannot be opened on the 2021 Mac due to the 2021 Mac being "incompatible" (???).

4. I downloaded an app file via nefarious means:

I :filez: an app of High Sierra because, I can't find this app file anywhere else (if anyone has a legit app file link, this may actually work - see below).

I found out that Apple's instructions are actually bad because you cannot execute the following on a 2021 Mac, because "we can't create bootable disks on Macs that aren't capable or too new to run the older OS" (see reddit link below), and that terminal will automatically kill this command:

(MyVolume being the USB stick volume name)

code:
sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume
Doing some searching, I found a reddit post that advises the following code, which worked!

code:
 cd /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/
codesign -s - -f createinstallmedia

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ High\ Sierra.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume
Triumphant, I took that USB stick to the 2009 Mac, booted it up... and the screen says

"The installer file is damaged"

After that, it refuses to even acknowledge the USB stick even exists anymore

5. I try to get Sierra instead

Nope, this isn't on Apple's website and even the :filez: place I found it gave me an ISO which requires doing strange things on a windows pc and I would rather not do that.

quote:

Please format the USB flash drive HPUSBFW.exe (in the hand), installed on the hard disk using the GPT scheme
Create flash cards:
1. Mount image macOS Sierra 10.12.310.11.6_usb.iso
2. Set the R-Drive (in the hand)
3. Format the flash drive, run the R-Drive.
4. Click the "Restore from an image", select 10.11.6_usb.arc (located in the image), click on, select the image and the stick
click "Next", a window will pop up - we agree, "Next" and "Start".
5. Prescribe sector (required !!!!)
Start BOOTICE (in distribution), select the flash drive, we press Process MBR, hereinafter referred to Restore the MBR, choose boot0af and hit Restore
6. Boot from the stick.
Begin the installation.
After installing the new boot from USB drive and choose the set max.
Further, after a successful zagruki Mac OS X ustnavlivaem from a folder! PostInstall !.
choose KernelBooter_kexts_title as in the picture, the rest of the default
and copy the Extra folder from the USB device to the hard drive with

I'm currently at my wit's end and I genuinely have no idea how to make this stupid 2009 Mac not a brick. Like I can of course just put it back where it was to languish in perpetuity, but I'm having Mad Personal And Irrational Reasons Having To Do With Me Feeling Inadequate for not allowing that to happen. What would be the best solution for this?

Here's a link to an Apple page with the various OS downloads, completely legit from Apple.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683

The Sierra link is here: http://updates-http.cdn-apple.com/2019/cert/061-39476-20191023-48f365f4-0015-4c41-9f44-39d3d2aca067/InstallOS.dmg

I would also try older versions of the OS. Maybe try El Capitan or Yosemite? Based on https://lowendmac.com/2009/21-imac-late-2009/ it should be able to use Sierra but maybe back up a bit just to see. Can't hurt.

Also if the terminal way isn't working, download the OS package and try https://macdaddy.io/install-disk-creator/.

Tried that, but any DMG file that opens to a PKG file will give me this error (save the os version) when opening it on the 2021 Mac:

Caught me after my edit, can you try this app to make the bootable media?

https://macdaddy.io/install-disk-creator/

Or can you use something like unpkg (https://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/) or something else to unpack the PKG file?
