this feels way too broad to be accurate. we have cooked many times without power, and showered with hot water, but obviously our gas clothes drier didn’t work.

yeah the automatic ignition on a range won't work but if you've got matches you can cook

You can actually shower quite a bit with hot water with any kind of tank-style water heater when the power's out because you still have a big tank of already-hot water that takes a long time to get cold. But the water heater will not actually be heating water up unless it's from the 70s.

Ranges and fireplaces are the exception, yeah. You can generally light those manually.

I have hot water radiative heat. It owns. You don't dry out the house trying to keep warm, and you can even set the wash next to them for drying clothes when an outdoor clothesline is infeasible!

it sounds like they have a plot of land they moved from that’s in a really nice place and they could sell it, remediate the bat problem and have like $100k left to blow

yeah its funny how he says he doesnt want to sell it due to losing his 'last vestige of security'. a savings account is security, friends/family/government housing is the last vestige. not a 2nd home with property.

Looking a little further and it isn't even a Victorian, it's a "victorian-style" built in the 1980s
