Part 113: Episode 4, Final Day, Trial: Phantom Bullet Ok that isn't what I was expecting. I thought we'd be using the last page of the DL-6 case file. But I'll show you why later. Anyway, there are two gunshots pictured in this photo - one to Gregory Edgeworth's heart, and one through the elevator glass window in the door. Music: Silence So, there was only one gunshot? Yes. I'm sure of that. Then everything faded. I see... Sound: Realization Music: Objection! ... And in it, lies a clear contradiction to Mr. Edgeworth's testimony. But what do you mean, a "contradiction"? Ouch, harsh. In case you picked the photo by accident, the game wants to be really sure you know what's going on here. Sound: Desk Slam As should be obvious, the contradiciton is here. Sound: Desk Slam Your Honor! Sound: Objection One shot hit the victim, the other hit the elevator door. I ask you, then! quote:The only other item of interest in the photo is the victim, Gregory Edgeworth himself. quote:Clicking anywhere else in the picture gets a generic failure: You know Karma isn't going to let us get away with that one that easily. However, when was the hole in the elevator made? It might have been there before the incident occurred! Sound: Fwa-Shing 2 Urk... Sound: Light Bulb Mr. Wright! We do, but this option is funnier. (Grr... I didn't think of that.) I, uh, don't have proof. Hah! As I suspected! Hmm... Nick! Take a look at this! Sound: Light Bulb The Court Record...? Wh-whoa! (She's right! That is strange!) Sound: Realization quote:I like that branch just because Maya gets to help out. If we claim to have proof from the beginning, we just skip the prior lines and continue straight to the next scene. Sound: Desk Slam Music: Silence Your Honor. I think I will be able to show you proof. Wh-what!? Impossible! Sound: Whack Music: Logic and Trick Very well, Mr. Wright. Show us your proof. What do you have that proves the bullet hole in the door was related to this incident? All right, this time we're using the last page of the case file. You do enjoy dragging out that file, don't you? I don't accept this evidence! Unless... you can tell us what page it's on! Another penalty here, but it's the only page we haven't shown so far. In fact, I'll display it again here since the Court Record is available. Look at the "Victim Data" in this file! Sound: Realization quote:Either presenting the wrong evidence, or picking the wrong page from the case file, results in some mild scolding from the judge and a penalty. Sound: Gallery Edgeworth must be so confused right about now. Sound: Gavel Sound: Desk Slam Music: Silence Miles Edgeworth only heard one gunshot! Sound: Objection quote:By now, you've probably realized that this entire sequence can play out in reverse by presenting the DL-6 case file first, and the incident photo second. While a lot of the dialogue is repeated, a lot is unique as well, so I'll play out this alternate timeline for you: Music: Objection! Sound: Gallery Wiggle your way out of that, Karma! Sound: Gavel x 3 O-order! Order! Sound: Whack It's simple, Your Honor. At the time of the incident, two shots were fired. The other hit the elevator door. Sound: Desk Slam In conclusion... M-Mr. Wright! But who could that someone else be!? Sound: Realization Music: Silence ... Mr. Wright... Try the "Case Summary" page. Look what is written there! Okay, fine, I'll look! ...? Sound: Realization Music: Suspense ...! Sound: Light Bulb If the pistol had indeed been fired two times... This logic seemed pretty tenuous when I was playing through it, but thinking about it now, it makes sense that after they discovered that the pistol had been fired twice, the police would have torn that crime scene apart looking for that second bullet. So where did it go? He does have a point. That second bullet has never been found! Sound: Fwa-Shing 2 Why? Because the second bullet does not exist! That is the truth of this matter. The whole truth. Sound: Gallery Sound: Gavel x 3 Order! I will have order! ... Mr. Wright has proven one thing to us quite clearly... However! It is highly unlikely that the police merely overlooked this second bullet. Music: Silence Sound: Gavel So, all we have is the single bullet fired. Bullshit! No one found the bullet fifteen years ago so we have to pretend it doesn't exist! Now what!? Tsk tsk tsk... Oh, gently caress you. You probably stole the bullet and falsified the case file. (Gah! How did this happen!?) (Was I wrong?) (Have I been wrong about this whole incident?) What are you doing, Nick!? Music: Suspense ... I'm sorry, Maya. Sound: Realization What? Sound: Light Bulb I... It looks like I was wrong. Nick...? N-no... Sound: Whack ... I'm sorry... I was so certain of it. I thought I'd won! But now... I was wrong to think it could be that simple. Nick... Sound: Gavel Pay no attention to the second bullet, it must not exist, the gun fired a blank or something. That somehow put a hole through the elevator door. Argh! Only one bullet was found at the scene of the crime. That shot was fired by Miles Edgeworth. Precisely. Have you been paying attention to the trial so far? Yes, Your Honor. Do you have any objections? No... No, I do not. ... Yes, I did. ... Oh no... Music: Silence ... Very well. Therefore, I must pronounce a verdict on the defendant today, right here... Sound: Fwa-Shing 2 Music: Suspense Right now! Indeed. (I've been here before...) (It's just like my first day in court...) (But my mind's gone blank, I can't find the words...) Uh, I've got nothing. (This is really the end.) (Edgeworth... I'm sorry.) What was it that I had been doing all this time? Wasn't my whole life leading up to today? Mia... I'm sorry. Music: Silence !!! Sound: Light Bulb Sound: Wipe Music: Suspense Maya...? What? Music: Silence Sound: Wipe Music: Suspense (What's happening to me...? I have to think...!) (Wait... Don't think... Act!) quote:If we had decided to object up-front, we would have skipped all that fun and moved straight ahead. Sound: Objection Your Honor! Sound: Desk Slam I... I object! Tsk tsk tsk. Oof! Nick...? (I... I don't know! His case is perfect!) Oh no... Grah! Music: Silence !!! Sound: Shock 2 Okay, sure. Let's reason this out a bit. We know the gun fired twice. So that second bullet must exist. But... where did it go? Sound: Wipe Music: Suspense What did you just say? N-nothing! (But where!?) Music: Silence Is Karma enough of a perfectionist that he found and stole away the second bullet to cover his tracks? ...Of course he is. ... Sound: Desk Slam Music: Telling the Truth Wait, Your Honor! Hmm? Sound: Light Bulb I, uh... What!? Sound: Stab 2 I-I realize that, Your Honor. (I'm really grasping here!) Sound: Desk Slam I'd kind of hoped Mia wouldn't have to bail Phoenix out this time, but I guess this one is minimal involvement at least. But... Who!? Sound: Whack Th-th-the murderer! Sound: Objection I'm... still thinking about that one. Hmm... Huh? It's not easy to find a stray bullet, Mr. Wright! Uhh... I'm lost here, you decide!

I can't say I'm an expert at these physics, but I dunno if that one little bullet hole would be enough ventilation for 2.5 people (two full-grown adults and a child). But also as mentioned before, elevators aren't supposed to be airtight in order to prevent exactly this situation from ever occurring, so who knows what would happen in Japanifornia.

Remember that Edgeworth heard a scream before passing out? I'm guessing that the bullet hit someone through the door, outside the elevator. The person who got hit didn't need to find the bullet as it was already embedded in their wound. Further conjecture: the person who got hit through the door is the killer, they entered the elevator after the doors started working again and shot Edgeworth Senior as he was passed out from oxygen deprivation.

Did Mia actually bail out Nick this time though? Not a fan of the bullet hole photo as evidence since from the way it's positioned, it could have hit Edgeworth senior while he was standing and he'd just have collapsed to where he was. Thankfully they make you go to the file anyway so you know there was a second shot.

Part 114: Episode 4, Final Day, Trial: Long Shot Pretty clear direction there. But why? (I haven't got a clue!) What's wrong, Mr. Wright? Uh... Um... You don't want to admit it, but it's true! Urk... quote:Well that sure doesn't look like the correct choice so far, does it? So what happens if we select that the murderer did have to find the bullet instead? No health bar showing, so no penalty attached to this decision, right? Music: Silence Music: Telling the Truth Music: Silence Oh! Duh! The first shot struck the murderer! So the murderer didn't need to go looking for it, and just took it from the crime scene with them! Wait, didn't Karma take a long vacation after the DL-6 Incident for no apparent reason? Was he... recovering from an injury, perhaps? Mr. Wright? Music: Telling the Truth Sound: Light Bulb U-uh, well, the murderer had no intention of taking the bullet from the scene. Sound: Realization "Had to," Mr. Wright? What do you mean? Well, for instance... (For instance WHAT!?) Sound: Stab Sound: Realization Here's my one problem with this theory - where did all the murderer's blood go? Karma got hit by a stray bullet, wandered over to the elevator, saw his enemy lying vulnerable and unconcsious, picked up the pistol and shot him, and didn't get any of his own blood anywhere? Remember the case file said there were "no clues found on the scene". The killer's blood would be a pretty big drat clue. (Maybe he really is a vampire; they don't bleed, right?) Music: Silence The bullet... hit the murderer? J-just saying, for instance. It's not like you could perform surgery right there. Y-y'know? ... ... ... (Wait a second...) Sound: Realization Let me get this straight. Grammar nerd note - that might be the first time I've seen the word "themself" actually used correctly in media form. And they left with the second bullet still inside of them!? Thus leaving only one bullet at the scene of the crime? But there's a problem with that! Sound: Whack The other two people rescued from that elevator... So that would mean... Sound: Realization Music: Investigation - Core Sound: Gallery I've been thinking that the murderer came from outside the elevator so long I was surprised that the crowd reacted here. Sound: Gavel x 3 Sound: Weak Gunshot Are elevator doors easier to open from the outside or something? Weren't they stuck in there for like five hours? What was the murderer doing hanging out in the courthouse for five hours after an earthquake had knocked out power? Sound: Weak Gunshot Hmm. Uh, thanks? Sound: Fwa-Shing 2 What are you saying! Deny it! Deny it! Sound: Whack There was no "murderer"! Sound: Whack Hmm... (He's right. I can't think of anyone...) Hey, Nick. Sound: Light Bulb Huh? Crazy? Sound: Realization Wait, Maya figured it out? Wow. It must have been quite a shock for von Karma. Yes, an unusual event for the man. Red text apparently means we should have paid attention to it. Music: Silence But took it because he was injured! Sound: Realization Music: Suspense Which would mean... It could only mean one thing! He was the man who shot Gregory Edgeworth! It was... von Karma! Sound: Guilty I like how they're having this crazy sidebar discussion in open court. (Oh man!) Sound: Realization Phoenix the guy just tased you to steal DL-6 evidence, is it that hard to imagine he was the killer? Uh, n-no, Your Honor. Well? Can you give us the name of your suspect? Let's wait until after Edgeworth is declared guilty again. (Wait... I don't have enough proof yet.) Mr. Wright? Something the matter? I-I'm fine, Your Honor. Tsk tsk tsk... In other words... the verdict! Wh-what! Not yet! Sound: Realization Think, Mr. Wright. Yet you cannot suggest anyone as a possible suspect! Which means your conjecture... is worthless. Do you think Karma has any idea we're about to turn around and accuse him? Nick! Sound: Whack The trial's almost over! Sound: Stab quote:Like the last few choices like this one, the other option just skips all that content and moves straight ahead. Music: Silence Sound: Desk Slam Your Honor! Music: Suspense ... Well, this is certainly interesting news. Very well, Mr. Wright. Who is your suspect? (Urk! My h-hands are shaking!) V-what? Oh, this is going to be great. Settle in for a show. Music: Silence Sound: Desk Slam Sound: Drama Pound Sound: Objection Sound: Stab 2 Music: Pressing Pursuit - Cornered Bah. You... don't object? Hmph. Sound: Desk Slam Yet you pride yourself on a perfect record! Fascinating! Prove it. Sound: Realization Sound: Fwa-Shing 2 Karma's real cocky there. Did he take out the bullet himself? Or... is it still in there, after all this time? Urk... Nick! Sound: Whack It's no use. E-Edgeworth!? He's perfect. He wouldn't leave clues. That would leave a doctor as a witness. Not if you kill the doctor, too! Leaving a bullet wound untreated seems... risky. So... so what, Nick? That's insane! No... he couldn't have. ... Sound: Realization Music: Silence (What does that mean...?) Sound: Light Bulb Music: Suspense Tsk tsk tsk... Well, Mr. Wright! Uh, I don't know, can we? (Even if von Karma did undergo surgery!) Hmph! It seems you have finally come to your senses. (Urk!) Nick... Music: Silence Music: Suspense quote:Once again, choosing to show evidence from the start just skips Mia's ghostly intervention. Music: Silence Sound: Desk Slam Alright, von Karma, I'll prove it. Sound: Realization Music: Pressing Pursuit - Cornered Wh-what!? The evidence that proves von Karma was shot is...! Probably not the Attorney's Badge, though I'm sure it will garner a few votes anyway. So if it's not that, then what evidence is the proof we need?

Man I gotta be honest I didn't remember the ghost of Mia popping in as much as she does. It's not like she's spelling out the entire case or anything, but it would still be nice to figure it out on your own. Then again, it really sucks to be stuck. I think she only shows up the one time if you pick the right options? Most of these appearances seem to be on the goof branches. I also don't think this is the actual ghost of Mia and this is just Phoenix' imagination as he goes off on his wildest tangent, dunno if the game ever clarifies one way or the other.

Von Karma's outfit looks like it has a bunch of layers, maybe his clothes just absorbed most of the blood and he cleaned up the rest? The police probably didn't test the outside of the elevator with luminol just in case there was someone's blood there.

I mean the guy literally assaulted and mugged you inside a police station just yesterday, I half figure that even if he'd left a massive blood trail and was caught on camera, he just berated a local gumshoe to clean it up and then dismiss it. Or less hyperbolically, if someone found luminol traces of his blood outside the elevator, arguing that that is not on the crime scene and there is no way to tell when it got there, he's in the courthouse every day and conceivably human enough that he might have once had a nosebleed.

Ok, I have read the update now. I agree there are some holes in Phoenix's supposition. But it isn't hard to believe a crazed perfectionist like Karma would keep a bullet in him as a reminder of a past failure. If he's been smart enough to take it out somehow, we're screwed. But if he's not that smart... let's use that special thing Gumshoe loaned us a while back to find out.

I suspect Mia showing up on the goof options is to keep the momentum going. Although some of the clues for DL-6 show up in investigation, there's a legitimate chance some people weren't thinking about how they were going to solve DL-6 in this case and weren't thinking about the clues as much for it here than Yanni Yogi directly.
