What are they even doing? The boards look too far from the building to be useful, and if they're just erecting the scaffolding doesn't it have slots/impressions that are just as fast to toss them into?

Lock tight erector set scaffolding supports unfastened boards that are still slotted in but you need to hit them with a mallet/when you're done separate them with a crowbar. Left to their own devices, and because they always have scaffolding boards for odd fits, they'll use the scaffolding boards to skip the mallet.

Seeing the hilarious rock mill video has reminded me of a terrifying thing that happened recently involving a wood chipper. I chopped down a tree in my garden and was going to rent the wood chipper from the local hire place, but due to circumstances I couldn't immediately. When I went to the hire place a few days later the wood chipper was not in the yard. I asked where the wood chipper was. A few days earlier -- when I originally planned to hire it -- another customer was using it when the wood chipper "exploded". The spinning chipping wheel took off upwards out of the chipper, smashing through the steel enclosure with great speed. They haven't been able to find all parts of the chipper. Somehow nobody was hurt. The one that exploded was roughly equivalent to the Hansa C27: https://www.hansaproducts.com/nz/product/commercial-nz/c27/ 2 knives attached to an 81kg cutting disk, 610mm in diameter, spinning at 1,800 rpm. You don't want to get in its way.
