Mercury_Storm posted:Twitter used to be more popular in Japan before Musk took over, also the X symbol generally means "fail" or "do not want" over there too lol. Something weird happened in Japan with Twitter last night. Loads and loads of people got suddenly suspended, for seemingly no reason (myself included). Trending last night were keywords like "account suspension" and "suspension festival" and "shadowban". Musk has managed to shake one of his biggest userbases that was largely ignorant of and didn't care about all the drama he has been causing.... until now.

"X" was focus-tested and bombed but Musk was so wounded by focus groups he went ahead and did it anyway. https://twitter.com/esjesjesj/status/1683523953094979584?s=20 Edit: Business speculation believes he wiped out anywhere from $4 billion to $20 billion in brand value (Elon Musk laughs for a moment) At last record, Twitter was worth $15 billion in May, about seven months after he bought the company for $44 billion. Elon Musk, like Donald Trump, is a loving moron who does things because he is - and I cannot stress this enough - an extremely unintelligent and impulsive person who is a slave to their most base instincts. Some Republicans and other fascists may indeed do zany stuff to distract from things, but not them. They are neither that intelligent nor that self-aware. Nothing about this was calculated or planned in advance, and nothing about it is driven by any factor beyond Musk's ridiculous obsession with the letter 'X' and his farcical desire to create the Western WeChat. This is the completely wrong regulatory environment to launch a new superapp (and has been since about 2016), Twitter is a bad platform for it anyway, and Musk is totally incompetent. Big things coming.

Not to break up the X-a-thon, but a quick note that the Kids Online Safety Act, a classic bit of overreach which is the first step in forcing every platform being discussed here (and presumably this one) to card you at the door, is going to be discussed in committee on Thursday. It has 39 cosponsors in the Senate, so if one of those Senators is yours, you might want to get in touch with them. And if not, just check in anyway. Apart from the issues the EFF bring up--like giving certain state attorneys general a new tool to hold the rest of the US hostage--the endgame is totally stable X/Twitter owner Elon Musk sitting on a government-mandated database of every user's real name, address and photo ID. A power I'm sure he'll use responsibly.

Musk has been painted into a corner since he committed to buy twitter for 52.40 a share, more than it was worth and more than he could afford without financial shenanigans that made all future proposals involving Twitter nonviable. At this point he has opened the paint can and he is huffing it.

Some absolute insane poo poo broke this afternoon: Far-right influencer and QAnon promoter Dom Lucre posted CSAM on Twitter. The imagery stayed up for FOUR days and had at least 300K views before the account got suspended. After getting suspended, a gaggle of shitheels from Kari Lake to the Krassensteins lobbied Musk to reinstate him, who did it within hours of the suspension after deleting the offending tweets. Musk is saying that it was a misunderstanding regards the suspension and that no one actually saw the imagery thanks to their Child Safety Team, but there's hundreds of replies in the original thread commenting on the original post. BTW, Dom Lucre was one of those guys that Musk paid out a couple weeks ago. Edit: apparently, they didn't get all of it, so Twitter will now download child pornography to your device without your knowledge. Great. I am probably going to significantly reduce my use of Twitter now. Edit Edit: poo poo gets worse and worse... Young Freud fucked around with this message at 01:38 on Jul 27, 2023 |

This really reminds me of that media person lamenting that people were mean to her, getting support from all the usual suspects in the New York City social media landscape, whatever their supposed ideology, where a bit of digging turned out that people were mean to her because she kept defending her parents, the convicted human traffickers; except it's the griftosphere and CSAM.
|
# ? Jul 27, 2023 02:21 |
I misread that as CSPAM at first and was confused then horrified. In regards to Thorn, I wonder if they stopped paying them not out of the usually obstinate "too big to fail" arrogance but because they are assuming that a company that makes CSAM-detecting programs cares enough about kids that they wouldn't just cut the license and let it run rampant just because twitter stopped paying them.

I'm not going to even try to confirm since it's sickening even as a concept, but that thread mentions a "daisy" as one of the child survivors, which is a name that also cropped up in Josh Duggar's trial as perhaps the most reprehensible of all the vile horrors that monster repeatedly got off to.

From a lot of the conversations that have come up regarding this, it is in fact THAT video. Which makes things stranger because a lot of CSAM-block-and-report algorithms are meant to compare hashes and visual data, since that video is well-known and documented among anti-CSAM-proliferation and CSA researchers, and should have been blocked. The simplest explanation, however, is that Elon has simply turned that off when he was cutting costs.
