Yes, that isn't a real man. The turtle had a puppet made to legitimize its tourism business

Well, for indigenous folks a plague of locusts was really good news because it was easy food in enormous quantities. You could just hold up a net and gather up your family or band's weekly food requirement in moments.

The Mormon settlers thought this was barbaric, of course, and couldn't stomach the thought of eating a tasty desert lobster. So when a plague of the bouncy little guys threatened their crops shortly after they, uh, stole Salt Lake City from the people who already lived in the area, they freaked out and thought they were doomed. The seagulls that appeared and happily ate said crickets were then greeted as saviors sent by God himself and the California Gull is still ironically the state bird of Utah.

What the settlers didn't know was that they were actually being really dumb, and that that plague of crickets represented the easiest calories they had ever encountered in their lives. They should have been chasing the seagulls off and gathering up the crickets, but alas.
As a native Utahn (born here, not indigenous) and lifelong resident, the worst part about this story is that we have a lot of amazing native birds and we chose goddamn seagulls as the state bird. Not even a cool kind, just plain California gulls.

How about grasshopper pie? :v: For those not from here, there is a state holiday on July 24th to celebrate when the Mormons arrived in the Salt Lake valley, called Pioneer Day. Those of us who are not Mormon really don't GAF and have Pie N Beer day as an alternative.

They're the same age, right? :v:

I wish they had videos of when they had the little kids ride sheep at rodeos when I was younger. No saddle, just hang onto the wool until you fall off and the last one still on got a trophy. I still remember the kid who must have really wanted that trophy because he was sitting like you would on top of a horse that you were riding, but on the side of the sheep as he'd slid 90 degrees over but hadn't let go yet.

My local rodeos would do this as well. I have vivid memories of a tiny child who had slid all the under a sheep and yet was somehow still hanging on for dear life while it ran around the arena. They would release several sheep and riders at once, and after they got over their initial panic the sheep would form a flock and go trotting around aimlessly. This kid ended up still on (“on”) his sheep after the flock had formed, and essentially disappeared inside it, so that the adults had to go digging through a bunch of sheep to find him.

Needless to say, he won, and I hope he cherishes whatever little trophy they gave him because he earned that poo poo.

One the dogs that lives in my home does this regularly because he would like some people food please, but I would not expect a snake to do so.

My girlfriend has a ball python who is every bit as attached to her as a dog would be. I call him The Love Sausage because he is -all about- her (and the fat little tail ball pythons have is hilarious and adorable). He's escaped his enclosure once and immediately made his way to her bed, where she was, to demand cuddle time.

I think even the mostly domesticated ones still pee everywhere, which is a pretty inconvenient trait to have in a free-roaming house pet.
