the appropriate stance from workers for any tentative bargain is skepticism. votes have to be earned. that said, if I were voting, I’d have to hear a pretty compelling argument to vote no on this one.

I was excited for the strike to play out, even for a little bit. Seems like an actual labor strike on that scale that had ripples across sectors had the potential to shake things up and maybe other people would realize their power and organize or join up. I know that's not exactly the point of a strike, so if the deal is good then fine, but still.

If it improves a lot of lives, even if its not the best deal possible, then good.

strikes are immensely costly, stressful and difficult for workers. every strike represents a failure: capital has failed to meet workers’ needs. in an ideal world, strikes would never occur because they wouldn’t have to. I like going out to the picket line as much as anyone but strikes, and labor organization in general, exist to protect and empower workers, not to entertain us or act as some kind of abstract anti-capitalist rallying cry.

i will say i hate how the messaging from the teamsters is "IT'S OVER WE'VE WON!!!" instead of being more reserved pending the actual votes of its members. not sure what the benefits are here to this sort of "marketing" message https://twitter.com/Teamsters/status/1683867683845021697

The message is that there will be no strike because the bargaining team whipped the corporate paypigs into submission. Topic locked.

yeah but why would that be the message the rank and file would ever want out? I can obviously understand why leadership wants to get out there and talk about how great of a job they did etc.

DAD LOST MY IPOD posted:the wage increases are actually pretty good, especially by historical standards (an absolutely subterranean bar, I know). the starting wage for part-timers is getting a lot of play among the disaffected, but 1) part of the contract is that there will be 30,000 new full time jobs, and 2) $21/hr is literally exactly splitting the difference between where the parties were at the last round of negotiation so it’s hard to argue that the union caved there. yeah it seems like getting rid of two-tier employment is a huge win. The other stuff seems like fairly solid incremental changes but abolishing two-tier employment means in the next contract they can go for even bigger wins without having to deal with overturning that. DAD LOST MY IPOD posted:strikes are immensely costly, stressful and difficult for workers. every strike represents a failure: capital has failed to meet workers’ needs. in an ideal world, strikes would never occur because they wouldn’t have to. I like going out to the picket line as much as anyone but strikes, and labor organization in general, exist to protect and empower workers, not to entertain us or act as some kind of abstract anti-capitalist rallying cry. yeah I'm always sympathetic to the idea of striking to get more, but it's important to remember that striking can be risky and if the strike goes badly there are never guarantees that you're actually going to win a better deal. When there's an imperfect but decent deal on the table, that decision looks riskier than when management offer table scraps. We won't know how the UPS workers feel about this one until the vote but from the outside it looks like they might have won some significant victories here and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of workers think striking to try and win more is too big a gamble.

There was an interesting bit that I heard brought up that the no forced overtime is also probably a bigger deal than usual. In early negotiations, UPS brought up that they'd like the option to transition to a 7-day delivery schedule relatively soon. They think that they'll need to do it to keep Amazon's own shipping down and stay competitive. Union said it was fine, but that it'd need to be set schedules and not just everyone having to pull an overtime day to make it work (which is what I'm sure UPS wanted to do). So getting fixed work schedules into the contract will let them stay ahead of that mess.

The two-tier system at UPS is older than I am, so getting rid of that is just inherently impressive to me. If memory serves, the John Deere workers who did go on a pretty long and grueling strike had removing the tier system at their plants as one of their demands and eventually had to back down on that. I believe the current UAW leadership is also talking a big game about removing them as well.

Current president has been pretty adamant that they will strike if they don't get tiers removed at the table.

the personal vehicle driver categorization really should have gone, I consider that to be a genuine downside of the contract, but saying that the distinction between FT and PT or inside and drivers are the same as “two tier” is stupid beyond belief and confirms that the author really doesn’t know what they’re talking about. it’s like saying that a universal national health service free at point of use isn’t really universal healthcare because some people won’t be able to make time to go to the doctor. that’s just not what those terms mean.

As frustrating as it is, I haven't seen any evidence that strategy isn't effective against newly-established unions. My store had its high-incident status stripped from it between the filing and our vote, costing us a whole person on the floor for opens and closes, and trying to file a ULP about that seemed to be entirely shut down by the company going "nuh uh".

UAW President announces Members' Demands this detail is cool quote:In past negotiations, the UAW’s core contract demands have been called the President’s Demands and the union’s president often delivered them to the company behind closed doors without even our elected National Negotiators present. This year, President Fain shared them directly with the members on Facebook Live.
