I get a subscription to Jacobin every year for Christmas (from someone who absolutely, unquestionably would not read it themselves; I assume they close one eye and shield their faces from god as they order it) and I’m happy to tell them to switch it to something less hit-and-miss. I just don’t know what is better, and it has the nice effect of riling up my brother-in-law when he sees “capitalism is a conspiracy” or whatever on the coffee table ask for a lifetime sub to Socialist Worker and The Burning Spear

tokin opposition posted:this might be some kind of meta goon faceblindness but she looks fine, idgi just looks like another hollywood hottie. what's challenging about it? From the article - quote:Holland discussed pushing for Chalotra to land the Yennefer role in the Netflix fantasy series in an interview with Variety. "Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is the showrunner [on The Witcher] and we work so well together and she's so open to conversations," she said. "In the book, [Yennefer's] described as the most beautiful woman in the world. This was a few years ago and I'd like to think things have changed. But when you think about people's unconscious bias -- especially in the fantasy world, it felt like these worlds were predominantly white. And I remember saying, 'I feel like we need to challenge what people think of as the standard of beauty. And having a woman of color in this role does incredibly powerful things to the people watching.'" So basically they are challenging beauty standards of having a hot woman play a role that another hot woman (white) may have otherwise taken. Basically the headline is clickbait nonsense

IIRC she was hunchbacked and made up to be ugly and deformed at the start of the show? IDK, I'm not a witcher guy and didn't watch much of it but I do remember they did a pretty good job at making her seem unattractive before the big transformation (honestly don't remember if I even got to that part.) They went beyond the usual media portrayal of unattractiveness where they just add a couple of signifiers but the person is still obviously super hot, like in those romance flicks where the hot actress just wears glasses and a ponytail, you know? Maybe that's what's tripping the bigots up, aside from the usual racism and misogyny of course, because obviously she's beautiful. These 2 minutes of thinking about it is already too much thought and effort than those bigots deserve lol, gently caress em

IIRC in the books it was that it was easier to get parents to give up a daughter who they thought wasn’t going to be very marriageable. not gonna check though!
