i don't think it's unbelievable ukraine destroys 4 guns for every 1 they lose, they have a very target dense environment

in the same way german fighter pilots racked up insane kill counts in 1945 because it was hard to shoot at the sky and not hit an allied plane

Their argument, to use that analogy, is that the Luftwaffe Experten were so good that they achieved air superiority over the Reich in 1945.

And also, it's very well established now that the Luftwaffe lied their loving heads off.

Admittedly, the big claim on the Ukrainian side is 32 guns which is…kind of nothing compared to the Russian artillery park and is probably higher than that. It is just ridiculous to pretend the Russians have a handful of guns when 5,000 of assorted types were taken from reserves to be processed.

On the level of narrative or whatever, Russian artillery superiority presents an unsolvable problem, so I guess they needed a story that provides some hope that the balance will tip.

Most of the Russian artillery is tied up in efforts to bomb their own prisons, bridges, nuclear plants, and cities.

In retrospect it was a foolish plan but in for a penny....

Putin Gives Zimbabwe Leader Mnangagwa a Helicopter, and Grain

Russian President Vladimir Putin handed Zimbabwean leader Emmerson Mnangagwa a presidential helicopter, according to the African nation’s government, as a show of their close ties.

Zimbabwe is also among several African countries that were promised free grain from Russia, a donation announced by Putin during a two-day Russia-Africa summit. The Mi-38 helicopter “will soon be gracing our skies,” Information Secretary Nick Mangwana said on Friday in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

In May, Moscow gave Mnangagwa’s government 18 helicopters for medical use and air policing, according to the Harare-based state-owned Herald newspaper.

Like Putin, the Zimbabwean president is sanctioned by the US and the European Union. Mnangagwa was one of 17 African heads of state who attended this week’s gathering in St. Petersburg.

Russia says drone downed over Moscow
1h ago
06.20 BST

Russian air defences downed a Ukrainian military drone before it could attack its targets near Moscow on Friday, the RIA news agency cited Russia’s defence ministry as saying.

The ministry said the incident has caused no casualties or damage to buildings.

I think I heard this! The other night I was up pretty late, and then there was a distant sound very similar to fireworks, but very regular (maybe 10-15 seconds total, with explosions at regular intervals). Thought to myself that it's unlikely there's random fireworks in the middle of the night on a weekday, and it might be AA. North East of Moscow.

Not a war nerd though so I have no idea if they actually sound like that.

No clue why Ukraine keeps trying to blow up poo poo in Moscow, unless they literally believe Russia has committed everything and everyone they have already.

Like, if you need a populace to be cool with a draft, "these people are capable of & are attacking our most developed cities far from the frontlines. Nobody is safe." Is a good way to do that. As Ukraine should know.

The status quo (a drip feed of western support to Ukraine enough to hurt Russia but not enough to enable Ukraine to meet their strategic objectives) is keeping them in the fight but the end game is still territorial concessions because the current level of support will eventually be reduced unless Ukraine "wins" and sues for peace under favorable terms. Problem: "favorable terms" for Ukraine's president is "Russia gives back all our territory" which is unlikely. So the war will continue and that drip feed of support is not going to get bigger under the status quo. On the other hand, an escalation and widening of the war makes it more likely that other countries will commit more to Ukraine or enter the war themselves, so Ukraine is going to take every opportunity to do that.

The general question of who is winning is Ukraine. They are extremely unlikely to lose self governance and become a client state of Russia. They have had major victories at Kyiv, Kherson, and Kharkiv. That said, the war is still being inflicted and fought on their country, to great loss of lives and resources. Cities are being leveled and Russia is stealing everything it can. Grain, oil, washing machines, children.

Oryx and Ukraine reports of Russian casualties (wounded and killed) seems to be in the right ballpark. And the general consensus is that Ukraine is losing less people than Russia. Of course, Russian leadership cares less about its people than most other countries. But there are consistent signs Russia is having trouble putting bodies on the front lines. They are always scrounging up more troops, and there are big hints that they lack reserves. Not being able to rotate and rest troops, not being able to add recruits to damaged units, and not being able to rush fresh soldiers to enemy breakthroughs are all huge problems.

That said... Russia largely just has to keep holding on to 'win'. Nobody really wins a war. It's a stupid sick waste and a horror. They failed at their initial goal , but still have a lot of Ukraine territory the elites consider important. Staying defensive plays to Russian strengths. The West can't supply Ukraine forever. It's almost certainly not a good idea for Ukraine to surrender places like Crimea, especially since Russia has a tendency to take parts of other countries and keep them as long as possible. There is a coalition against Russia currently, even if the support of Ukraine could have been faster and more effective. But politics can and do change.

So my money is on Ukraine. Russia has proven unable to make significant advances, while Ukraine has the bulk of the victories. The momentum and control of the battlefield, the logistics and morale all point to Ukraine. I just hope they can win the war instead of winning most of the battles but still losing the overall war.

Your money is on Ukraine to accomplish what, exactly? Not getting completely conquered or having a puppet government installed but losing a big chunk of the Eastern part of the country (even if they don't lose all access to the Black Sea) is not a strategic outcome the Ukrainian political class can or will accept as an end state to the war. What's the end game that Ukraine can reach from here that's actually palatable enough to enable a peace deal without an immediate CIA-backed right wing coup - or simply a popular nationalist outcry that brings down the government?
