Is the Russian plan now to just let Ukraine destroy its army against its defenses? It does seem like political support in the west is starting to fail and Russia could hold tight a year or more and the aid might get cut off. It really only takes a few EU countries to want out for Ukraine to be screwed.

Controversial Legacy In Germany, under §189 of the criminal code, defamation of the memory of a deceased person is a criminal offence which upon conviction may attract a fine or a prison term of up to two years. The Burianek case hit the headlines again in 2012 and 2013 on account of a former Stasi officer, Colonel Wolfgang Schmidt, who used his internet site to describe Burianek as a "bandit" and as the "leader of a terrorist organisation". On 27 September 2012 Schmidt was convicted under §189 in respect of the matter by a court which evidently accepted that Schmidt's characterizations of Burianek had been false and defamatory. The court ordered Schmidt to pay a fine of €1,200. The action against Schmidt had been triggered by Hubertus Knabe, the director of the Hohenschönhausen Memorial Museum on the northern edge of Berlin. It was not the first time Knabe and Schmidt had come across one another, Schmidt already having been fined €2,100 in 2009 for calling Knabe himself a "publicly unrestrained rabble rouser" ("öffentlich und ungestraft als Volksverhetzer") in connection with Knabe's earlier work on the Stasi. Schmidt appealed against the €1,200 fine, imposed under §189 for defaming the memory of Johann Burianek, but on 18 March 2013 the District Court rejected his appeal.Knabe welcomed the court's verdict: "I am pleased that the Justice System stands up against historical revisionism from former Stasi operatives. Even today, we must not allow the perpetrators to denigrate their victims in public." He also stressed the significance of a court decision which, for the first time, extended §189 of the Criminal code to include negative portrayals of those convicted by the German Democratic Republic.

Its not like the west is going to "Give up" on ukraine, its just that what they can offer is already scaping the bottom of the barrel. The pentagon having to do accounting errors to finance large scale equipment transfers to ukraine points to them not being able to get things transferred legitimately through congress. A lot of the money thats being earmarked for ukraine is just to keep the country running and not transfer more equipment, and a lot of the money thats being set aside for equipment is to make it, often times from 4th tier MIC companies, just purchasing anything they have available at the time to send down there. Terrible time to announce the counter offensive part 2 with the weather loving up any pushes and letting russians entrench themselves better. Saw a video of trucks going through a line with the guys dropping anti tank mines from it. Not even burying them, just tossing them at the edge of shrub line. Like an hours worth of work that will end up loving up millions of dollars of western armor.

I'm always so curious what the characterization of that stuff was, because judging by the wider forums my best guess is there were a bunch of mods who decided the forums were a front for the war and they were gonna fight it by god. Which I'd think would be a bigger problem for the site and its community than a thread taking a neutral position on a US proxy war. Especially given how many of that group got hit for stealth editing posts and abuse of admin powers like a year or two later. But like, welp, what're you gonna do. I get why Az was annoyed, just... ugh.

The other forums genuinely think this thread is hootin and hollerin for genocide and that we crave the deaths of Ukrainian babies. Theres occasional debate as to whether or not we're actively on the Kremlin's payroll of if we're doing it freelance. And, yes, some of them seem to think posting on SomethingAwful.com actively helps Russia... somehow. The IKs have clamped down on the most wild eyed accusations, but the sentiment is still there. Although I guess that is fair considering I work in US defense policy and I'm the guy actively fighting against giving Ukraine F-16s. I'll see them all dead before they get one of our precious jets. Also I regularly funnel intelligence to my Russian handlers.
