I tried to buy a new phone recently. New, not refurbished, not restored, not "new in box" condition. The used Samsung phone I bought earlier this year failed completely for no apparent reason, so I wanted something brand new with a warranty. Amazon made it impossible - no matter what search filters I used, it kept trying to point me to a used phone reseller. Eventually I went to Motorola's website, sorted by the largest discount, and bought the first one on the list. It's great.

It was long ago I tried sell something new on Amazon so I can't remember the specifics. But they have a deterrent to selling new items. It was something like you had to show tax compliance for new items, some sort of red tape that just made it easier to sell items 'as new' instead of 'new', even if they were new.

I think you're underestimating how much people want to have those status symbols. A normal person doesn't see an expensive watch or car or whatever and go "man this person ripped off countless workers and this is the dumb poo poo they spend their money on", they just daydream about how cool it'd be to have one themself. Media constantly markets this stuff as a good thing we all should aspire to not an egregious display of wealth.

I’ve seen doctors and executives have watch-offs with each other. They’re 100% for showing off. It’s like the business card scene in American Psycho

they actually care about the economy, unlike the tankies in this thread. try going to china and buying a giant gently caress off truck with bad credit, you'll get the secret police coming to your house to ship you off to a kei car re-education camp to learn about how the glorious leader wants you to take the bus like some kind of homo (this isn't a slur, people do gay stuff on the bus I think, my nephew keeps talking about "bussy" and loves troye sivan)

Paid off the rest of my student loans. I qualified for reduced monthly income but it pushed my overall end date of payment up 8 years.. and added about $3,000 in interest. I have been trying to save up what I can and this was the month that I could finally get the rest of it paid down.

Bidenomics hard at work and that should reduce the overall inflation down to a -% you're all welcome.

I wonder if they could have permanently paused interest in an easier to push through way than full on forgiveness? I mean obviously the latter is way better but lack of interest would end up helping a lot of people.

Yeah, I looked at consolidating my loans and getting on a lowered income monthly payment plan. I have roughly 6 years of non profit work during my student loan forgiveness, and was wondering if I could just limp it out for a few years and then qualify for PSLF, but that would just be an additional monthly payment and additional costs tacked on to it. I'm incredibly fortunate that I was able to save a bit these past years and I can get this "debt weight" off my chest. My loans were small in comparison to many people, so I consider myself very fortunate, and hope that a lot of people will get some relief with the poo poo "plan" that was given to loan holders after the supreme court decision.

One of the things that was a nail in the coffin for me being fully done with working in tech was every god drat product has stupid loving names like "make" or "save" or other super standard words so googling for "how do you fix X in make" brings up absolutely nothing useful and the products themselves are utter dogshit for their own documentation.

The other horrible thing is when the answer DID exist on the companies website - like I was looking for some obscure issue that only occurred with like a 4k monitor and some logitech product - but at some point logitech purged their KB and now all that exist are echos of the site in googles cache but not the whole page with the answer. IT ROCKS.

It was bizarre seeing this stuff on tiktok. I watched some Professional Watch Seller one time so I kept getting his videos in my feed. It was just constant arguments with customers about how their $32,000 watch had the wrong color second hand or something.

"I know I said I'd pay 42k but with taxes and fees this watch is 45k so why wouldn't I just step up to the (whatever bullshit edition) at 51k?"

They have to hire armored cars to transport any of their watches in the $100,000+ range.

Hell I don't even buy books from Amazon anymore. Haven't for many years. You want a decent online bookstore? Plenty.

If I'm willing to wait 1-3 months, I find better items for better prices on Aliexpress. Might as well cut out the middle man if I don't need it in two days.
