Jesus I'm glad I accidentally spoiled myself before watching the replay of CAN-AUS. How is a top 10 team this mentally weak?

FIFA rankings are utterly meaningless and Canada is only up there because they won a fluke COVID gold medal.

They've won 2 games this calendar year.

Canada has been a top 10 team for about a decade actually (fell out in 2015).

And went 11-3-3 in 2022. They've clearly had poor form in 2023 but are still a good team.

They're by definition not utterly meaningless, flawed i'm sure, but clearly Canada is not in the top 10 only by virtue of winning a gold medal in Tokyo (against healthy full squads)

How about ELO rankings then?

No rankings have enough of a recency bias to actually gauge the current form of a given team. Canada has been terrible for 9 months, but they were decent in 2021 and 2022 and those results are heavily weighted into their current ranking.

Canada has always had an inflated FIFA ranking due to the fact that they're the second best team in a weak confederation. CONCACAF sucks outside of the US and Canada so Canada is only losing to a team that is almost always above them in the world rankings during qualifying and regional tournaments. They're good enough to go beat a UEFA minnow like Ireland but are in no way competitive with the elite teams in Europe who are consistently beating each other like France or England.

I already conceded that their current form was bad and if 2022-23 was the only time they were ranked in the top 10 i'd agree with you, but they've been ranked top 10 for most of a decade. Also, Canada has never played a majority of their games in a calendar year against CONCACAF opposition so your second paragraph is incorrect, except for the fact they're not likely to beat the elite teams in Europe or the US (which I never said they would).

Canada is a good team who is in poor form this year. Not sure why this controversial for you.

Even on this I see at least 4 teams I would rate to beat canada or at least run them drat close even though they're ranked lower. As other posters have said the fact that rankings by their nature have to go back a ways hide how rough canada has looked recently and how turnover has hurt the squad

The argument was that Canada was ranked in the top 10 only because of winning the gold medal in Tokyo, which is empirically not true. Or later because they beat up on CONCACAF teams (except the US) to juice their ranking, this also seems to not be true.

A dip in form doesn't necessarily mean they don't have the talent of a top 10 team or shouldn't have been considered a top 10 team in the past.

I think the fact that they got dumped out in the group stage in a bloated World Cup is pretty good evidence that they're nowhere close to a top 10 team in the world.

I'm not sure what part of 'poor recent form' you don't understand.

And I think i'll take the opinion of someone who creates flimsy arguments that are easily proven wrong and insists on a vibes-based system, with a grain of salt.

sure, but I do not believe they have the talent and organisation to be considered one of the top 10 teams in the world anymore, and haven't considered them a top 10 team for a while. We can look at ELO or fifa rankings or whatever but it's all subjective assessments.

I think Canada was a top 10 team and generally advanced in women’s football like a decade ago but this poo poo has been moving so fast in recent years. Lots of countries have caught and surpassed them, probably for good.

I still think a lot of the success ages ago came from the fact that canada had more opportunity for women to play, but as you say other more football dedicated countries have caught up. top 10 then, but sadly not anymore

How long is awhile? Tokyo was in 2022 and to win an elite tourney you usually have to have a good team, some would even say top 10 (Euro 2004 notwithstanding).

I agree with most of this, though not necessarily with the "for good" part. Soccer is more popular as it has ever been in Canada and hopefully the infrastructure will be improved in the future.

Fair enough, the CSA has shown an astounding level of incompetence. I think all the poo poo now being in the public consciousness as well as co-hosting the 2026 WC will force positive changes

No I don't, that's why I asked what you think awhile is because going 11-3-3 in 2022 and winning the gold medal in 2021 are objectively things a good team does and should make them subjectively good for most anyone during that period of time.

The rest of the world is improving at such a rapid rate that I doubt Canada’s ability / willingness to invest at the level that is necessary to be a consistent top 10 team.

Royalty is a continuous shitposting motion.
Canada's neither small nor poor. This was a poo poo tournament from them, and they might be toast as a major contender in the women's game, but I don't see how they're less likely to be good 8 years from now than Sweden or Norway. Or, gently caress, England. Because all the players on that team will have to deal with starvation under the second BoJo government.

e: More seriously, many of the arguments you could make against Canada you can make against Japan. Not a major traditional soccer power, lack of investment from their FA, seeming to be on the downslope after an excellent run when many nations weren't as competitive, etc. Yet Japan utterly styled on every opponent including "top contender" Spain in the group stage.

Might be something that could be 'fixed' with a change of manager or something. Australia was garbage at soccer until they got Gustavvson who revamped how they did everything, and then they were garbage again after they got pumped by Nigeria, whereas now they're the best team in the world and about to go undefeated for the rest of the tournament.

I chose to believe you worded it specifically this way because going to penalties is officially recorded as a draw even if you lose there, so you'd still be technically correct.

We’re like that with the men’s team too, Arnold was a genius when qualifying was going well, then we hosed up against trash-tier shitters and he was a dumbarse who didn’t know one end of a football from the other. Until we qualified for and were successful at the World Cup, when he was a genius again.
