The Zones of Thought books by Vernor Vinge are my go-tos. It's a toss-up as to which you'll prefer to read first. A Fire Upon the Deep has the galactic scope, A Deepness in the Sky the more character-based story.

In terms of things that I'm looking for:
  • I want something that really grabs me. Something with interesting characters, bizarre/creative/clever depictions of technology, clear and engaging descriptions of space combat.
  • I want to "feel" the scale of things, but not be overwhelmed with tonnes of characters.
  • I don't want anything too depressing (if possible).
  • I don't mind if it's one book, or a series.

Yeah if you like children of time then Vinge’s A Deepness in the Sky will feel very comfortable for you, CoT was definitely inspired by it.

I always recommend the Paradox series. Lots of ships and space marine action, with really solid character work and a neat plot. It's a fun read without being stupid.

For cherryh, The pride of chanur is a good entry, she's peerless at tense politics, fairly hard sci Fi and interesting aliens.

Gideon is Gideon the ninth, which is basically indescribable in a way that won't make it sound awful but is actually phenomenally good. Three books written, fourth and last coming next year probably.

These aren't great. It's okay for reading about space battles, but the prose isn't great, the characters are paper thin, and while I adore well-executed competency porn - this really isn't.

I did just finish KJ Parker's Siege trilogy, and that really is well-done competency porn. If smart, sarcastic, competent protagonists are your thing, read these books.

A Deepness in the Sky, Children of Time/Memory/Ruin, Revelation Space, Chasm City (only, not sequels), the Three Body problem. To my knowledge none of those have FTL or FTL communication. Of those Deepness is probably my favorite, but all of them are pretty grand in scope at least in terms of the setting. Note that Fire Upon the Deep does have FTL etc, and is the same setting. Charles Stross’s Iron Sunrise (which just came up due to a gratuitous and really gross scene) has FTL communications with logical consequences.

Royalty is a continuous shitposting motion.
Finished Light Bringer, the 6th and latest entry into the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown. It was typical of the series. Propulsive, tense, space opera with some still hanging on bits of the YA trappings it had from the first book and which it's increasingly left behind. And a bunch of swerves in the plot that make sense, but make me sad. Major spoilers because I need to vent and my brother hasn't finished the book yet: Lysander au Lune cannot die a painful enough death.I should have known Cassius was going to actually die when he and Darrow had made peace and agreed that they were brothers until the end. gently caress that Pixie.

They're very good yarns about ridiculous space Romans and Vikings, especially the second series which sheds pretty much all the YA stuff and goes entirely with "So you beat the big bad running the system. What happens after that? And, btw, you and your closest compatriots are wracked by the trauma of what happened to you when you were in your late teens and early twenties."

Strong recommend, regardless of the copypasta about the first pages of the first book. If you really can't stand YA stuff, skip the first book. I appreciate that the second book follows up the first's sequel hook of "similar poo poo, but ON SPACESHIPS" by having the very first chapter be the final day of that naval academy.
