is standup crowd work really rough and unfunny in NZ? just judging from your story, and how my partner once got ripped to poo poo at a show till she left. her crime was sitting quietly and not laughing at stuff she didn't find funny. i only have those examples but i've literally never heard somebody talk about any other standup show in nz.

chch is the home of standup in nz

idk why someone said it so it much be true

I used to go to quite a bit a few years ago. it was quite variable. I got to know some of the comedians a bit, audrey porne was popular on twitter and finding out she was a kiwi and in fact in chch was what got me to my first show.

people generally go there to have a good time and be in the mood to laugh. sometimes it works and is contagious, but not every time. and if you go enough you'll hear the same jokes over and over

I've been too a few comedy nights. James Nokise is always pretty solid.

Ben Hurley didn't quite hit the mark,
"No one laughed at my climax joke."
I didn't realise he'd finished.

The best stand up comedian in the country is without a doubt Guy Montgomery and if any of you fools still haven't seen his show on TV3 (which recently got picked up for a second season) I pity you.

e: He's also bringing his (award winning) set from this year back to the Q Theatre on the 25th of this month so I'd also implore you to see that if you missed it in May.

Both parties went to arbitration on the condition that they would accept the recommendations. I think the union still technically has to ratify it, but yeah it's pretty much a done deal.

I hope the dumbasses in NZEI who voted to accept our deal enjoy knowing that PPTA are getting $2k more than them in the payout. We should never have voted to accept.

When the NZEI and PPTA strike, aren't they competing for the same limited pool of political will to achieve their goals?

Surely it's only fair that our secondary teachers get the better end of the stick given the dire state of our high schools and the nature of the work they do.

Can't tell if you're genuine or trolling, but that's literally the opposite of how solidarity and collective action work, and it's pretty hosed to suggest primary teachers or ECE deserve less pay than secondary teachers.

PPTA deserve a better deal because they pushed for it collectively. Fortunately for NZEI we have a pay parity clause so that the higher pay conditions in one collective agreement are automatically applied to the other. It just doesn't include the lump sum payments that PPTA are getting, which are about $2000 more than what NZEI negotiated.

Also it's a real sign how hosed our society is that teachers (while still underpaid) could easily be making 100k now which is a lot more than many other jobs. Purely because they are one of the few professions with a somewhat functioning union

"improving convenience of movement" aka more cars, since all the actual projects promising convenience of movement are coincidentally those that also deliver modes of transport that are more climate friendly.

The perennial question in transport: what if we made it drastically easier to move around our cities AND significantly reduced emissions?

Unfortunately that would require people to change their habits slightly. So it is unfortunately a political impossibility.

Also it just makes me so mad that they want to spend billions on saving people a few minutes in travel times, when they could be spending billions on the health system to save people minutes on wait times. They could fund ambulances or something. Give the teachers and nurses all their payrises. But no just roads roads roads.

The pro road argument comes from people that don't actually live in the cities and talk about urban planning and transit systems literally like they're culture war. One guy was arguing that Wainuiomata was going to be turned into a 15 minute city.

Firstly, stop threatening people with a good time.

Secondly, no they're not. There's not going to be a point where you can't move to the burbs and drive to wherever. It's urban planning, key word being urban. Personally I'd prefer if suburban sprawl was kept under control, but we already know that's not going to happen.

They think it's a conspiracy to take away people's freedom of movement. They strawman policies around like, congestion charging, low traffic neighbourhoods, pedestrianised areas and poo poo to claim that governments have a wider agenda of banning cars completely or preventing people from travelling outside their neighbourhood at all

The conspiracy is that once you are in a 15min city (((they))) will limit your freedom of movement. You will be trapped in your local area and will need permits to travel into different ones.

People will also point to China's social credit system as something that will also be implemented.

Just seems exceptionally tenuous and contrived and incoherent even by the standards of these things. Makes me wonder if it's just a case of conspiracy brains having nowhere to go when society is very explicit about immiserating everyone and making everything worse; all the evil poo poo is just ordinary and out in the open now so there's no longer a need for a nefarious conspiracy you can feel special about knowing. So you have to come up with some truly wild and senseless poo poo to feel smug about.
