At my work we have a new self assessment tool that's apparantly very "lean." One way in which it is "lean" is it autosaves each field separately whenever you type and it blindly trusts this will always trigger, to the point of not including a manual save button since adding a button to do what it automatically always does isn't "lean" enough. Guess what happened when I had connection issues while filling out my self assessment...

Self-checkout is fantastic, plus it makes it easier for people in need to steal fresh things by measuring as the cheapest item in the store lol Plus you can always identify the boomers who are worth staying away from via self-checkout bc they always say poo poo about 'doing [someone's] job for them'. I can't imagine that any of these people would survive outside the US, or even in some of the larger US cities, where people also are expected to bag their own groceries. Meanwhile a lot of America has employees whose only job is bagging things for you.

Total motherfucker if you have 4 items and one of them is booze.

They deliberately pick the bad produce and expiring items for curbside + delivery orders because even if only half of people claim a refund it's a lot cheaper than throwing it out. Grocery Store Profits.txt

that all makes sense but just going in the store it's obvious that's rarely the real problem. the quality is shittier across the board because of supply chain poo poo/exports, and when ordering pickup have to decide whatever specific brand/format you want. and generally if all of that specific, say, bagged salad mix is grody, theyll still grab you one instead of picking a similar kind that doesn't look like poo poo. and i doubt the kid pulling the items is taking extra time to check all 3 shelves all the way back of them in some cases for The Worst One

I think this may depend where you live. Not having a car I like to get a large delivery of staples every 2-3 weeks or so -which delivery is just great for if you have the refrigerator/cardboard space- and never had a problem with this. Produce and expiry dates have been pretty much what you'd expect if you grab the item at random. Always completely average. I put this down to the packers really not caring and just grabbing what ever easiest, which is what you'd expect unless managment says anything otherwise.

Self checkouts have gotten considerably worse here in Australia over the past 6 months. You are now filmed from above and AI decides whether or not you have other stuff in your trolley (like say, shopping from other stores or a baby change bag) and won't let you pay and leave until you are checked by an attendant. They've also just upgraded those cameras in my local supermarket to scan whatever veg you put on the scale and select it automatically so that you can't put it through as something cheaper. This is very annoying if you prefer to buy things like meat at a proper butcher, veg from a nice greengrocer, etc and then go to the supermarket for staples only. I've heard the reason for this isn't to prevent theft, but moreso to change people's habits and get them to stop at the supermarket first to avoid this inconvenience (and hence be more likely to just buy everything there).

Self checkouts arent actually any faster than a reasonably competent checker they're solely there to cut down on staffing and increase profits. Self checkouts make your supermarket increasingly crappy because there's fewer actual people to help run and manage the store but you gotta eat so gently caress you. Also gently caress having a qr code menu at a restaurant I don't go out to eat so I can stare at my phone like a goddamn savage.

Instead of going straight to the menu I had to find it on their terrible mobile-unfriendly website and it was in a .docx file.

Self checkout is okay if you're just grabbing a bag of müsli or whatever. But somehow a pimply kid half my age has to swipe a card and approve that I scan a sixpack and then swipe to approve my payment. It's completely ridiculous. Not to mention the scale that weighs the items you put in your bags and flips its poo poo if you need to rearrange some stuff a bit.

As of yet, self check outs here are still great. You grab a hand scanner, you walk through the store with your shopping bag or backpack, and put stuff right into your back as you scan it. You pay at the check out, and walk out without touching your groceries more than once. Sucks a bit if you gotta wait for a random check if you scanned everything, but overall it's quicker and more pleasant than waiting in line. But i think one of the supermarkets already reverted back to old school check out. Another chain of sports goods has RFID tags on *every* product. You walk up to the register, put your stuff in a bin with a reader, and it'll automatically recognize them with pretty good reliability. Can't do it all in one go sadly, but it still feels like magic. Scanning a whole trolley of groceries at the self check out is just stupid
