Corgis love bread. And Puro

We've got some interesting stuff coming up this week. The G-1 has the final block matches & then the Quarter Finals, 5★STAR Grand Prix rolls on, All Japan have another Triple Crown defence in a city that isn't Tokyo (they aren't unknown, but the last time there were 2 back-to-back was 2018 when Zeus was champion, he won in Osaka & then defended in Nagareyama), Ice Ribbon's top belt is defended on a Ganbare Joshi show, Marvelous have a fun looking show marred by the presence of Mayumi Ozaki in the main event, BJW are at Korakuen. But. The show I want to single out is on Friday the 11th, a national holiday in Japan. Pro Wrestling FREEDOMS, the world's premiere deathmatch promotion, return to the Yokohama Budokan for the first time in 15 months & they bring a fairly stacked show. We have Junior & World Title matches, we've got a barefoot Lego deathmatch between Fujita & Ueki, we've got a BJW deathmatch guys vs FREEDOMS deathmatch guys match which is pretty exciting. And then we've got special guests as Hiromu Takahashi tags with former New Japan junior Tatsuhito Takaiwa against FREEDOMS young boys Dragon Libre & Takahiro Katori as well as a big deathmatch to celebrate Jun Kasai's 25th Anniversary in wrestling with El Desperado teaming with Kasai against Takeda & Yamashita in what is a match of the year candidate on paper. Weird enough as it is having 2 New Japan guys on this show, weirder still is how you're going to be able to watch this. Yes, it'll be on Samurai TV eventually (not until September 2nd, & it'll be cut down to 2 hours), but it's being shown live as a Pay Per View on New Japan World. New Japan is in the deathmatch business baby!

Sorry, but I'm really tickled by this fact.

Caught up with yesterday's GLEAT show and as always it was very good. Top two matches were sweet, even Ibushi being a step slower it's still cool to see him, completely eating Ishida's shots in order to submit Shimatani was loving awesome. Both Gleaters that got thrown into kickboxing/MMA made a far better accounting of themselves this time around. Only downer for me was the ladies stable making their big debut and featuring a bunch of people I like only to get beaten in 6 minutes, maybe they had to cut time because they weren't expecting Izuchi to last the distance against old man Gono

A couple of years back the N-1 gave us Mutoh going to a time limit draw in two-thirds of his matches which really soured me on following it show to show. I'll just be watching stuff that seems good to me, so maybe 4 or 5 matches from night 1

I do that with most shows i'm catching up with but am resistant to doing it during tournaments because I like getting as clear a picture as possible what each person's story through the tour is.

If it's like 2AW or Big Japan I usually only watch one or two matches a show from guys I know are guaranteed to bring it every time

EVIL in the G1 taught me it's OK to skip Tournament matches.

I'll watch everything in a tournaments which only has 4 matches a night, like the Tokyo Princess Cup or the BJW tournaments. But the trend for shows of 8 tournament matches a night is I bit too much if you're not just watching one promotion

Pheromones haven't had a match in NOAH in at least a year. I should know, I've looked at every card and they appear nowhere in the line-ups. Now, there IS a comforting impenetrable void of utter blackness on every card that I'm surprised I don't hear more about, but we're getting off-topic now.

We need more women in STEM, and by that, I mean skateboarding, television, esports, and magic.
I'm going to be in Tokyo for the back half of September, and I'd like to see at least one (possibly multiple!) wrestling shows while I'm there.

I saw the OP recommend the Puwota website (ty!), and I used that to find a few shows happening in Tokyo that are probably compatible with my other plans.

- 9/21: P.P.P. Tokyo "Re: Party" at Shinjuku FACE
- 9/24: DDT "Who's Gonna Top" at Korakuen Hall
- 9/29: Stardom "New Blood 11" at Shinagawa Intercity Hall

I know that DDT is a comedy promotion, Stardom is a women's promotion, and that Korakuen Hall is one of the more famous venues, but that's kind of it.

What should I know about these? What on earth is that 30,000 yen ticket for the P.P.P. show? Is the Stardom show's concept like an all-rookie thing? Puroresu goons, I would appreciate your knowledge and insights, thank you!

Jul 27, 2006

New Blood isn't all-rookie but it's definitely a rookie showcase. If you have to choose one, choose DDT at Korakuen.

PPP Tokyo is a newer company, no idea why they're priced that high, and STARDOM's show sounds like a rookie showcase (the company itself is good in general but that's probably not a good live introduction to it). DDT's comedy but has a fair amount of serious matches mixed in too. In terms of quality and in terms of entertainment, I think the move would be to go for DDT

They've actually got the cheapest normal tickets at 6,000 yen (the other two are a little higher), but there's also a 30,000 option and I'm so curious because I can't find an explanation of it anywhere.

Jerusalem

DDT is a lot of fun with the more serious matches on the top of the card (and they're usually really drat good) plus their new champion - Chris Brookes - loving rules. Just be warned that they have an act called Pheromones which is basically Gay Panic: The Stable which generally opens or appears early in the card. It's treated as a comedy gimmick and is very popular with the fans, but it's pretty hosed up, wastes a lot of talented wrestlers, and the "comedy" is "what if these guys sexually molest their opponents instead of wrestling them!?!"

fez_machine
Nov 27, 2004
DDT tends to have early comedy matches then an intermission then high work rate serious matches. Generally it's good quality stuff. Who's going to top is one of the larger shows they do.

If you can catch a Chocopro Show in Ichigaya, the production quality might not appeal but it's an in person experience like no other. If Emi's there they'll heap on value adds for an international visitor.

The same goes for Baka Gaijin and friends although tickets may be impossible to get.

What should I know about these? What on earth is that 30,000 yen ticket for the P.P.P. show? Is the Stardom show's concept like an all-rookie thing? Puroresu goons, I would appreciate your knowledge and insights, thank you!

The first thing to know about PPP is that they use Joji Otani, who was found guilty of the Japanese equivalence of statutory rape. He slept with an underage fan, & he knew she was underage to top it off. He's served his time obviously but still feel like this is useful information to consider. Putting that aside, it's a pretty standard Japanese indy that uses a mix of their own talent & some excellent outside & freelance talent. Well, I say standard, they have men's & women's divisions so that's still fairly unusual in Japan.

Stardom is obviously a fantastic promotion, but New Blood shows aren't exactly normal Stardom. But they aren't just rookie shows, there's an nice mix of veterans for the youngsters to face, & you'll probably have 1 or 2 title matches, with the Future of Stardom Title & the New Blood Tag Team Titles routinely defended on those events. Obviously you won't get any matches on the level of Giulia vs Tam Nakano or Syuri vs Utami Hayashishita, but you'll get a really fun mix of talent, the most recent New Blood show had Nanae Takahashi (Stardom's original trainer) bullying Mai Sakurai which was very fun, Rebel X Enemy team of Ram Kaicho & Maika Ozaki, AZM, Starlight Kid is one of the tag champions & Rina is the Future of Stardom champion.

DDT is a hard promotion to categorise; it's roots are in comedy, a pastiche of sports entertainment turned up to 11 but they have some absolutely tremendous talent too. Their Korakuen Hall shows are always worth watching for me, there will be some sort of title match on there, probably two (not likely to be the top belt though, the KO-D Openweight though, that's defended on the 9th September). Saki Akai is currently on the road to her retirement in November so there will be a fun match involving her, probably with her stablemates in Eruption who are very cool. But yeah, DDT have a lot of great talent like Yuji Hino, Chris Brookes, Kazusada Higuchi, Yuki Ueno, there's a bunch of really exciting talent trained by the head of their dojo Jun Akiyama, a lot to like. The downside of course is Pheromones who are really crappy gay panic stuff that the fans seem to think is hilarious but it's one match on the show, probably 2nd or 3rd. And they might not even exist by the time you go because there's a Unit Dissolves match at the 9/9 show with Akito vs Yuki Iino. There will still be Danshoku Dieno though.

Obviously I have no idea of the other plans you have but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that All Japan, my Promotion of the Year, featuring my top 2 wrestlers of the year, run Korakuen Hall on 23/9. Hard to say what the card will be this far out as they have the Royal Road tournament this month & then the winner of that, I assume, will face the Triple Crown champion (who is currently my #2 WOTY Yuma Aoyagi, who is actually defending the title on a show that starts in under an hour from when I write this) on the 8th September. But there's a good chance there will be a Tag Team Title match, & you'll probably get to see New Japan legends Yuji Nagata & Satoshi Kojima too. Should be great, but then I am an unashamed AJPW booster right now.

ZERO1 start their Junior Heavyweight tournament on 22/9, their Junior ace Shoki Kitamura is in it & he is fantastic. So far the other confirmed names are veteran Kenichiro Arai, Hikaru Sato (ex-MMA guy, Minoru Suzuki disciple, really good), Astro Black (ZERO1 junior who debuted in 2021, high flyer) & Makigo (who may be an MMA guy? I might not even have the name right, Google translate is what it is).

On the 23rd there's a Tokyo Joshi Pro show in Yokohama Radiant Hall, which is about a 45 minute train ride from Tokyo Station, but the biggest show around the days you're in Japan is at the Yokohama Budokan: The finals of Stardom's 5 Star Grand Prix, on the 30th September. As well as having the winner of the Blue Stars block vs the winner of Red Stars block, there's a bunch of block matches too, including the mouthwatering prospect of Giulia vs Utami Hayashishita, AZM vs Momo Watanabe, Mayu Iwatani vs Starlight Kid & Natsupoi vs Tam Nakano. I have no idea if you have other plans or are going home by then or what, but god, that card will be absolutely fantastic.

There's also a New Japan show on the 28th in Tokorozawa, which is in the Tokyo suburbs & is a little further out than Yokohama, between an hour & an hour 15 from Tokyo Station. It'll be a Road to Destruction show so I can't imagine there will be anything special, but it's a chance to see your favourite New Japan wrestlers.

And yeah, fez_machine is right, when Gatoh Move put up their September schedule have a look at seeing a show at Ichigaya, it's a unique experience.

We need more women in STEM, and by that, I mean skateboarding, television, esports, and magic.
Well, that's a ton of useful info, thank you all (and extra thanks to fork)!

I did see that All Japan is having a show too, but I've got tickets already to a Yakult Swallows game that day instead. Unfortunately, I'm also leaving the morning of 9/30, so the really big Stardom show isn't an option. :(

The DDT show is the hardest one to make work schedule-wise, but I'll prioritize it. It's also good to hear that the Stardom New Blood show isn't only a rookie thing. If I can, I'll go for that too (unless the ChocoPro thingy works out).

Not knowing what the 30,000 yen ticket to the PPP show is will haunt me for the rest of my days.

I did some googling since the name of this expensive ticket piqued my interest; the Harenchi Seat or in English, "the shameless seat."

This promotion appears to have some type of connection to the adult entertainment industry and has created a few options for customers that are inspired by host/hostess clubs.

I found this official tweet about the Harenchi Seat and the machine translation and accompanying photos explain it well enough:

Basically, you get to sit with some bikini models and drink champagne with them during the show. Similar to the hostess club experience of buying a bunch of drinks to enjoy the company of a hostess. Probably not something you really want to opt for unless you can speak Japanese well or are up for the challenge of navigating a remarkably awkward and potentially expensive night at the wrestling.

Okay, dodged a bullet there. I thought it might be something like a meet-and-greet before the show or grabbing dinner afterward. That's very different. Thank you!

Aha, that checks out, PPP do indeed have ownership connections to the adult entertainment business. Possibly pornography IIRC?

I suppose in the rich history of pro-wrestling companies rinsing marks for every penny they can this makes sense.

Congratulations on not getting fit in 2011!
I'd love to be able to say that Yuma Aoyagi totally won't lose the belt to Suwama; leading to even more Kento vs. Suwama. But, current times have me very jaded. :gibs:

Yuma's going to lose the belt to my boy Takuya Nomura, or possibly his partner Fuminori Abe

I may be an incredibly stupid mark who is incapable of learning from the past but I don't think that'll happen. If it does All Japan will sure lose a lot of good will with me.

Saito Brothers aside the Royal Road lineup is real fun. Abe vs Suwama will be kind of fascinating, tall tag partners in Ayabe & Ishikawa colliding it fun, nice to see Hayato Tamura, Atsuki vs Kento is some real good poo poo, & Omori vs Nomura will slap.

Atsuki Aoyagi dragged HAYATA to a pretty decent match back on the 20th July in NOAH
