I've brought it up before, but Section 31 could be an excellent anthology series with a Sloane-type lone actor as the perspective character being the only consistent cast member. Just an adventure of the week, "helping" out where Starfleet can't and seemingly doing good or ill. And finishing the season off with the interstitial actions all culminating in dominoes falling into place for a finale of a greater plot in play.

Col. Flagg from M*A*S*H doing Col. Flagg things for an entire series. Whatever alias he uses that episode is the role the actor is listed as in the credits. One episode he uses the actor's actual name as an alias.

Not even necessarily always being the protagonist of the episode either, but you see them pop up at some point as "Ensign New Transfer" and you know poo poo's about to go down someway or other.

Also many, many challenges to the ship are solved with diverting power somewhere.

I don't have a problem with it; the ship's power is finite. It's just a really common theme in TNG that some system needs more power to get the job done.

Episode starts with him talking about breaking out of a Cardassian interrogation center. Then end of the episode reveals that he drove all the cardassians to suicide by giving the most frustrating and contradictory answers. When confronted with this, he says "Nobody can get the truth out of me because even I don't know what it is. I keep myself in a constant state of utter confusion."

don’t worry, when they turn out not to be trustworthy they’ll send two really tall security guys we’ve never seen before to walk really slowly down a hallway at them

then a really incredibly unrealistic slow motion fist fight will break out, and one security guy will get punched and fall down

the ship’s doctor (who is standing there along with the entire leadership team) will run and kneel next to the guy, wave a glowy thing, and say:

“He’s dead captain!”

Data did it once by emulating Picard's or maybe Riker's voice.

A voice type and a small string of numbers and digits: THAT's your root level security?

fear that your console rocks will explode or that you will be assigned to an away team where everyone else there is a main character

or worse, a one episode romance b plot

Starfleet Academy, however, just does not need to exist. Least of all because Prodigy does (or rather, did... :sigh:) and it's functionally the exact same sort of show you'd wind up with anyway.

I always wanted to see Section 31 in conflict with Starfleet Intelligence or some other actually-legitimate, public-facing Federation intelligence organization.
