Plus some kind of contest involving playing the full game early in a Swedish prison or something. Gives me hope we'll get more live action vids though:

I know Payday is very based on Heat but I watched The French Connection with a friend last night and we couldn't stop laughing at how Payday the cops were behaving (unnecessarily escalating in ways that got tons of bystanders killed and just made the situation way worse than "gently caress it just let em have it").

-8 unique heists at launch
-unique gameplay mechanics for each heist
-breaking stealth is not necessarily a failure every time anymore
-different security levels for different areas of the heist
^- This sounds a lot like how it works when you're caught trespassing in the new HItman. You get escorted out without sounding alarms and can try again
-Lots of objectives can be done without putting the mask on
-There's a differentiation between different civilians, workers/employees and customers
-Enemies will change tactics depending on whether you have civilians nearby, eg shotgunners change to more precise weapons if civilians are nearby, use more flashbangs, etc.
-This means civilians can be placed strategically instead of just being able to be traded to lower heat
-Different security firms cycle between mission attempts, sounds like some may be more high tech with more cameras?
-Hacking has more uses now and can be expanded to more functionality post-launch
-New gadgets are ways to de-escalate situations or approach security complications
-New audio cues called 'coordinated voice lines' that references things happening like SWAT reacting to dozers showing up by saying "Make way for the dozer", lines for civilians as well.
-New defense mechanisms like laser grids, alarm floors, moving sensors

Edit: Apparently there's a beta/playtest starting today. You can request access from the Steam page but I have no idea how selective they're being about it.

tuned in and the first thing i heard is "i wish this game was better. i don't find it very fun. at all."

e: though in the game's defense, almost directly after saying this he went on a curmudgeonly rant about how he doesn't know what he's supposed to do, which i definitely agree is a fault in the game. the onboarding experience for payday has always been stupid as hell. the fact that the Long Guide exists and is considered a must-read for so much of the community is proof positive of that. but going from "the game has a lovely learning curve" to "the game just isn't fun" seems like an unjustified leap.

Jeff's predictably being a bit dramatic because I assume he tried to play payday with randoms once before and never figured out what's going on and from then on it became a series he hated. He's mad at this because he doesn't know how to play the game and it's hectic trying to learn the ropes with everything going on, which it definitely is, but this really isn't Jeff's kind of game because it requires cooperation with friends.

The music definitely sounds bad tho

yeah he's now said like 4 times that "it's really hard to have a good time with matchmaking" which is just not true at all. it's true that the learning curve sucks rear end but you don't need any learning really to shoot cop.

Yeah I like Jeff but he's been leaning into his curmudgeonly ways more lately. For instance I'm not sure why he's surprised that Payday 3 is similar to Payday 2 but also why he feels like he's familiar enough with Payday 2 to dismiss this as "just the same thing".

Jesus christ, between the complaints of always online, denuvo, "game's just a reskin", "graphics: BIG OOF", bad performance, "why didn't I get in the beta I have 1000 hours in payday 2", UE4, devs are stupid and lazy, etc etc I think I'll just log off from this game entirely until it comes out. It certainly doesn't look like a huge change in the formula and there isn't reason to think much of what you see will change by launch but people are being insanely negative about everything involving this game based on a technical test everywhere I look.

Isn't this basically every beta, ever? Especially sequels? It effectively boils down to "The devs didn't read my mind on exactly what the previous game needed to be improved, therefore, new game bad."

That's not to say that Payday 3 is good or bad - I haven't played it and I don't know. But I'm 95% going to buy it unless the reviews are awful, just based on the sheer number of hours I got out of Payday 2.

Honestly that's kinder to gamers than I'd be. Most of the time the complaints aren't even that reasonable, they're "this consumer product doesn't transcend the limits of time, space, and logic" level stuff. Really the issue is that when social spaces exist for the purposes of complaining, unreasonable complaining becomes a social competition that rapidly becomes incomprehensible to any person who engages with reality.

And I'm a pro-complaining guy! Kvetching is a great thing to do, it feels good and binds people together and there's no way its less healthy than refusing to share your feelings with the world. But it's salt, and you can't bake a cake out of salt.

I effectively haven't played in 3 or 4 years, and I don't think any game will ever top it's play time. Even if I took 30% off the top. From what I've heard, I like the direction payday 3 is going, but I don't play with my friends often enough anymore to buy it right away.

TOURISTS SPOTTED, TWELVE O'CLOCK
Got into the beta this afternoon and played a few rounds with pubbies while waiting on my usual crew to be around.

I'm enjoying it so far. Not sure if it's just being low level again but combat feels a bit more substantial. Less portal to the cop dimension in terms of numbers but everything is a bit tougher to take down. The damage difference from headshots feels a lot higher too so they feel very satisfying and important.

Not done much stealth yet; still kinda hard with a bunch of randoms.

As someone who got TO the vault in full stealth, you kinda need someone to leave casing mode. Gotta Human Shield the cam guard now in order to use Takedown properly, apparently. Not to mention that fall damage will force you out of casing.

That said, you can still get the keycards in casing. Just gotta touch two guards' butts for it. And I guess find the exec and take him to the vault.

Either way, randos will make sure you might not get all the money un-dyed. It's Rats Day 3's money but you can still get it even if it blows. It just won't count I think.

Also lockpicking is INSANELY faster than before unbuffed. It's now timing based, and the safety deposit boxes only take like two timed hits to pop. Only three boxes are really worth opening: the documents and two extra bags of money.

But still, here's what you get on Normal:

Gotta wrangle the pubs a bit, but it's possible.

And you press G to stealth now. Don't ask me how I know.

Got into the beta somehow. Felt like something was missing until I unlocked the shotgun, and now everything is good again. I like the lockpicking minigame, especially since it doesn't punish you that hard even when you mess up. Still haven't done a lot of stealth, but it's not like I play these games for the stealth anyway lol.

Not sure how I feel about overkill weapons yet, the grenade launcher is fine but I wish the grenades would always explode on impact, not just when you hit an enemy (but I guess that could be a different GL in the future).

Feel pretty positive about the game overall! It's obviously difficult to get a good feel for the gameplay loop when you only have a few weapons and one map, but I'm still having fun running around and shooting cops, which is what matters most.

Another thing I dunno about yet is that you might be limited to equipping four skills? Or it could be just a UI limitation.

I got Aced Mower, Basic Medic thingy that gives me two more charges on Medic Bag, and Recoil Control. Aced skills now count as two slots taken? No idea how to go about that other than just going for very few skills or even forgoing acing Mower... which I dunno if I wanna do since it gives Grit (+10% Damage boost) for either every 35 bullets fired OR empty mag reloaded.

Where it only shows four skills. I might have to get a fifth skill point to see it better but yeah it looks like I can only bring in four skills.

Also each skill right now is a single point a piece.

I don't care what you say about this post, but if anyone steps on my bunion, I'll kill them!
Got into the beta, and since I deliberately haven't looked too much at Payday 3 prior to playing I was thrown off by the fact that by default, Mark Target is set to middle mouse button instead of F. Of course, I didn't know this the first time, and wondered why F wasn't letting me mark a guard, so instead I hit G...which is still "throw frag grenade." Whatever, I came to SHOOT COPS anyway! Apologies to the people playing crossplay on Xbox who are just running through stealthing whatever objectives as I have no idea how they even got in.

I've only tried on Normal and Hard so far, but the CAR-4 felt less effective than the pistol in that it's harder to land headshots. The Renfield feels a lot more solid.

Reminder that the beta happening now is explicitly a netcode stability test more than anything else. We know that the version in active development is much further along, including a completely different UI.

But the default for that in PD2 is "3" :v:

Yeah but I've seen a lot of people throw grenades when trying to throw bodies or bags, because you pickup with F, but throw with Q, unike PD2 which put throwing bags on G.

The total rumors I hear are that Payday 3 is going to try to be a return to a more grounded, grittier, less ridiculous game, so I guess I'm asking, how long should I wait post-release for the DLC to get it back up to a good healthy Saints Row level? 2 years?

Depends on sales, tbh. If sales = good, then grounded == true. Else, game += dildos or something.
