Or they send to anyone who is slightly interested. I signed up for a trade association about 10 years ago, paid a membership fee for a year, then stopped. I still get their print magazine a few times a year in the mail.

If you realize and accept it for what it is, a framed article or trophy can be something you put in a glass case in the lobby of your business to give you slightly more cred or at least the appearance of cred

I’m at a union conference and there is a table for our insurance company offering a pretty good chance of getting a $100 giftcard… except you have to agree to give a blood sample. My Wrong Detector started going off and I refused because I remember a goon once posting that you should never give your insurance company any more information than required. What is the deal here?

I assume they use it to deny you coverage in the future due to 'pre-existing conditions'. Or kick you off the plan if you have genes that make you susceptible to (expensive disease).

Insurance companies have discovered the treasure trove that information on their clients gives them and are now collecting as much as possible because who knows what in the future it'll show. It used to be that they had to look at a group of people and do statistical analysis to guess how many who would have no/some/lot of issues and set rates averaging that out across that group. That's no longer the case and they are increasingly drilling down the dataset to singleton levels and dropping the "expensive" people. (additionally the "expensive" payouts are also getting higher these days too).

That's what I assumed it was. You could always ask them specifically what it was for, then ask your union (assuming they are good). Inexpensive genetic testing and lab work if they don't have any from you is probably the answer, though, along with "maybe it's not as useful now, but in the future, who knows?"

goatsestretchgoals posted:Why is this happening at a union conference? No, it’s a labour union. It was explained to me that it was for the benefit of members, who could be told more information about their health in order to improve it and that it’s illegal in Canada to remove expensive members from insurance, but I still don’t trust it.

I expect the way it will work (in future) is that it's all fed into an incredibly expensive black box machine learning model that tells them to drop all the expensive claimants "Sorry your honour our process is just to follow the computer, you can't prove it drops expensive cases because no one understands it except Dr Blofeld from IBM"
|
# ? Aug 17, 2023 17:14 |

I wouldn't do it for the aforementioned reasons, but in principle I think companies should always pay us for the privilege of recording our personal information. So they are doing one thing right.
