Seems like the cope cage worked against the RPG round too, before it was disabled.

Against simpler older style RPG rounds the cages can work. In that ones case the fuse just didn't go off though.

Typically they cause the warhead to detonate prematurely so it can't pierce the armor.

Doesn't work against the more modern tandem warhead ATGM's though. I think even some of the 80's era munitions can go through cage or slat armor too.

Yeah, it's basically a worse torpedo, slower and interceptable by an alert crewman with a machine gun. So not something that anyone with an actual navy with modern weapons would bother with. But it's a good improvisation if you don't happen to have any 100k aircraft carriers and nuclear attack subs.

What sort of aiming modes do modern torpedoes have*, anyway? Are they aimed like AA missiles where you feed them some target info to head towards and their own seekers take over as they get closer, or do they have a ground attack like "follow these waypoints and pick a target with these specs within this area; self destruct if there are none" mode? Aim by wire all the way to the target?

Basically, I'm wondering if the drones have an advantage in the roundabout routes they can take to the target.

* According to publicly available data etc

Yeah kind of, the advantage of the drones is their range, you can launch these from 500km away. With a torpedo you have to have a ship relatively close by. They can also just sit in the middle of the sea for a while (at least I'd assume they have some power reserves) and wait for a target to show up.

No, that's not how they work. The little bit of extra standoff distance does not meaningfully impact penetration. The way they and the slat armor used more in the west work is by mechanically crushing the warhead before detonation, making it not work, or even just stopping it without fuzing. RPG rounds need to hit something solid with the tip or they won't go off, and if the side hits an obstacle first while going very fast, it will just break the round.

Right, these days the function of slat or cage armor is to add the possibility of the warhead being mangled or simply caught or bounced without an impact fuze being triggered. Reasonably modern shaped charges are muuuuch better designed than the stuff from the 40's and 50's and you may actually increase the effectiveness on target by adding a bit of distance. On top of that you have explosively formed penetrators (used in many top attack munitions, for example) that effectively give zero fucks about standoff distance because the shaped charge is just throwing a hyper velocity kinetic projectile - a bit of air or even a thin metal plate thrown into its path by ERA aren't going to present much of an obstacle.

In general, I find that he's good on US domestic policy, but, like many left leaning commentators, his foreign policy takes are pretty bad. I think it stems from a desire to lower the global influence of the US which, in general, I agree is a good goal. However, it leads many to think that if the US is supportive of something, it must be bad.

Edit: I think my statement that his overall foreign policy takes are pretty bad isn't accurate. I think it's more accurate to say his foreign policy takes are a mixed bag.

In a more pragmatic/practical sense, it's unlikely that the influence of the USA can be realistically lowered to the extent most left-leaning/leftist commentators would like to see barring black swan events like the 2016 election of Trump.

The thing about capitalism capturing all possible critiques of capitalism is people start making those critiques with the express intent of getting paid for getting captured by capitalism. One of the unspoken tenants of leftism, "you're going to stay poor, or, at least uncomfortably, perilously, lower middle class, and you're going to refuse all offers to sell out for a more comfortable life until everyone can live that life" is pretty much a no-go. This is also why leftist movements, at least in america, a land where grifters are idolized, gets devoured by hucksters almost immediately once they grow to statistically significant sizes (Black Lives Matters Inc, etc). The mentality is basically that a vast pool of people working toward a communal goal is just free money some fools left on the table for you to steal for your own.

The phrase "these things seem impossible, until they happen" comes to mind. I cannot look at the past twenty years and say ANY source of power remaining stable is a sure thing. Trump may or may not go to prison, but the dozens of millions of assholes who would like to see the libs get owned remain*.
