The question of exact age is something of a moot point given that Millium and Altina are literally artificial people. With that context in mind it stands to reason that since they look and act like children they are, functionally, children.

I mean the age give to them is not the age of how long they have been alive or whatever. Millium is 13 in CS1 because she is a robot child, not because she's been around 13 years. And just like how Rean's like 3 years older now same with them because I don't think the writing considers them really less human than the rest of the gang.

This doesn't make the Jusis stuff any better of course, that still sucks!

People appear to have finished porting the Xseed translation and fixing most of the bugs caused by doing so if you have a hacked switch though.

GUNDAM!!!
Trails of Reverie - I just finished Chapter 2 and the big reveal was good, but I sort of figured it out - His voice and speaking cadence is too specific and unique and the voice modulation didn't do enough to hide it. When Nadia said she had figured it out and it didn't make sense yet that was sort of it for me. It's a good one though and I'm glad of it. Rufus is a cool bad guy and it's nice to see him fleshed out a bit more. His group really needs access to the Reverie Corridor though, all of their sequences seem way harder to me.

Digging the game! United Fronts are great. It's nice to have another source of BP generation. It really does feel like a cool send-off before whatever comes next, though I hope some characters like Joshua and Estelle show up again in at least one of the parties. Since one of their group did join up it makes sense they would too but more of them is better than less.

I don't think that it was supposed to be completely unknowable. I think it's supposed to be possible to figure it out based on those things. I myself came very close to figuring it out based on that myself. It would be an interesting experiment if you could give a whole bunch of different VA's unique, but in-character lines, run the clips through a modulator and see if people could tell who they were anyway.

hot take on end of CS4
Millium should have stayed dead, or at least stayed as a sword. So that there could at least be a cost to everything. Can't believe they even revived Crow after him being dead forever, and the crap he pulled.

I don't find this to be a particularly hot take, the end of that game seems to really hate the idea of there being any kind of consequence for anything. I don't have anything against Crow or Millium, I'm not like rooting for them to be dead or unhappy or whatever, but I wish something had stuck, y'know?

Disagree

The true ending of CS4 is Class 7 finally getting an unambiguous win and a happy ending for everyone, after having downer or bittersweet endings in their previous 3 games.

edit:

Reiterating my take on the ending:

SgtSteel91 posted:

I feel like the point of CS4’s ending and general vibe is that you’re supposed to have this dread about everyone being okay, worried about the fates of Rean, Crow, and eventually Millium and what will happen when the Rivalries end. Because nothing has really worked out for Class 7: in CS1 they lost the school and became separated, in CS2 they lost Crow and Rean ended up being conscripted as a Government lapdog, and in CS3 they failed to stop the Twilight from starting, Millium died and Rean was lost in his out of control power. But the True Ending of CS4 subverts all that. As they characters say a miracle happened; with the combined power of heroes from Crossbell to Liberl they defeated the malice of Ishmelga that plague Erebonia since it’s founding, and with the godlike combined powers of the Divine Knights, freed from the Rivalries they also saved Crow and Millium from their fates. Osborne said at the end of CS3 that they were going to write the ending to this dark fairy tail with ink black as despair. But Rean and everyone else said “gently caress that” and wrote their own ending with hope. I feel like you’re supposed to look at the ending as not “wth what an asspull” but “holy poo poo I can’t believe Rean and Class 7 actually won their happy ending that’s amazing.”

Very lukewarm take. Cold Steel 4 is terrified to an almost comical degree of anything having anything resembling a consequence.

[Includes spoilers through the main ending of Reverie]

The problem with the CS4 ending and the series in general is that I am no longer capable of feeling that dread in any way, shape or form because they have demonstrated such a thorough unwillingness to let anything bad stick. Yeah, Crow and Millium died, but they got better. Yeah, Ilya was hospitalized for a few years, but she got better. Yeah, Angelica got shot, but she got better. Yeah, Emperor Eugent got shot, but he got better. Yeah, Valimar and Ordine went away, but it turns out they've still been fully conscious and watching from Robo-Heaven or whatever. As far as I can recall, the literal only two bad things that have happened to good guys that didn't get rolled back (outside of sad backstories that happened before you meet a character) are Victor Arseid losing his arm and Olivier losing his eye, and even the event that precipitated those turned out to mostly be a fakeout.

At no point in Reverie was I ever worried about any further harm befalling anyone. When the surprise Railway Cannon fired at Gaius's family or when Rufus set himself up to die in Babel, I just kind of rolled my eyes and waited for the Deus ex Machina.

SgtSteel91 posted:

I don't need the story to be dark. I'm 100% OK with everybody surviving and getting a happy ending, but I'm a little tired of the story wringing its hands and clutching its pearls pretending that anything else is even a remote possibility. It gets tedious (though it was kind of funny seeing that Lloyd had basically figured out that they all have plot armor). One reason I liked the Daydreams in Reverie way more than any of the main story content -- they were mostly honest about their stakes.

SgtSteel91
Oct 21, 2010

Can't really retort to any of that; even I know things work out okay in the end, and it's been a thing since Trails in the Sky, but I'm able to adjust my willing suspense of disbelief and 'play along' when the story says there's stakes or gets serious.

Cold steel goes for fakeout deaths way too often but I’m not going to hold that against the future of the series.

MythosDragon
Jan 3, 2016

At the very least, everyone's gotta do two things.

One, stop pretending Cold Steel was in anyway the start of these tropes. If it wasn't Crossbell, it was Sky. For example Mind control started in arc 1, game 1, and has been in every arc but arc 3. So if anything Cold Steel avoided it longest.

Two compare Trails to its actual contemporaries. Every 10 plus year shounen battle series and fellow recurring plot RPGs Suikoden and Kingdom Hearts. Please do not actually compare to Kingdom Hearts. An example of a series that gets around this a lot more gracefully would be One Punch Man. You know from the start that Saitama is never going to lose or even really struggle, so that's never treated as a key element of the drama. Like I said, I'm not asking for stakes, just honesty.

One thing I'd really like to see in a future game is Nadia realizing that Lloyd was right about the tendency for everything to work itself out, and abusing that to her advantage somehow, since she's supposed to be the clever one of her group.
