Heck, if I lived on a little island just offshore from the mainland, I'd get this boat for grocery runs. I'd decorate it with colourful lights and kitschy poo poo, and be locally famous as the mysterious and eccentric recluse.

The Boomin' Beaver beavers booms. It's the waterborne equivalent of a short bed, single cab Dodge dually with a Cummins 5.9l turbo diesel and a dozer blade on the front.

A curious case of the logging industry and the military having different definitions for the same word.

In logging parlance, boom means log boom, a collection of logs floating within a chained up perimeter of other logs for transport in assembly in collection/sorting areas and transprt down river/cross bay. In this case, a boom boat is a small, very buoyant tugboat (usually) with a propulsion system that allows it to spin in place and be used as a battering ram/lever to stack and sort logs.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXIrr7D_v8k

The military originally defined boom as a floating barrier to block access to an area, or a torpedo boom which is the floating component of a torpedo net designed to entangle torpedos. In that case, a boom boat is a larger but still small, and powerful tug boat with facilities to move and anchor the booms. Now they are used for environmental protection duties, as a all-weather work boats, and to clear areas of debris as needed.

I will not shut up about the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I talk about them all the time and work them into every conversation I have. I built a shrine in my room for the yellow one who died because sadly no one noticed because she died around 9/11. Wanna see it?

So to tie all the booms together. :v

The oldest use for boom as a word is a horizontal spar for either rigging a sail or a crane. But boom also would be a barrier across something like a river.

Now sailing ships would also have spare spars and they might lash them together to make a spar deck. That spar deck, that’s where your logging usage of a bunch of logs getting lashed together called a “boom” is coming from.

So if you have a bunch of big spars and you want to make a barrier across a river or harbor you could lash them together to make that, a boom.

So a long and horizontally oriented spars (booms) is where all these usages are coming from.

Spar decks are where people used to go get some sun too before tanning salons. It's why you would hear a bit about Spartans.
