the party in power who the coup leader was affiliated with anyway was theoretically the leftist one but lol this is really just kind of infighting between the songhai elite about foreign policy and trade (and personal ambitions), and the coup guys are firmly in the right on that front

PawParole posted:Abyssinia is the dark orange region also known as Habeshas (ie. Amhara, Tigray,). The eastern, central, and southern regions of Ethiopia are Cushitic (ie. Somali, Oromo, Afar, Sidamo, etc). The western and southwestern regions belong to Nilotic Ethiopians. Wait, when was the British punitive expedition to Ethiopia? Weren't the Ethiopians bounded by the Red Sea as a British lake, the Sudan and Kenya? I'm not doubting it, I'm just surprised that they were expanding, since the expedition to Abyssinia that destroyed Magdala made it sound very similar to Tibet. The accounts of it read like the expedition to Tibet too, in terms of geography, remoteness, resistance encountered etc. It seemed far flung and not particularly threatening. tbf those parties really can't do anything because they came into power and were told that their economic transformation policies would have to be ditched.

madame secretary episode five the opening is that iran is continuing to do construction work on a heavy water site that looks indistinguishable from a walmart the chief negotiator in vienna suggests we bomb it since iran promised to stop doing construction on it madame secretary wisely and sagely asks what iran was supposed to get in exchange for this and is told they were supposed to get aviation imports none of which theyve received yet madame secretary suggests we give them aviation imports in exchange for their stopping construction this is immediately criticized as appeasement and noone seems to notice that the sequence of events appears to imply that we simply never bothered to attempt to hold up our end of the original deal im just noting with some irony that this whole plot was written years before the collapse of the real world iran deal for nearly identical reasons and that the hardline position in madame secretary (which to be clear isnt what prevails in the show) is actually an escalation over what trump did because it involved bombing raids lol her argument for negotiating is literally they could get a bomb any day now been awhile since ive seen that trope and definitely not in the service of that particular argument Some Guy TT has issued a correction as of 05:15 on Aug 8, 2023 |

yeah that's what kinda sucks about these shows: they try to present the US as this peaceful, reasoned state that will come to the table, and that any extremist, militarist elements will get outfoxed by the smart guys before the balloon goes up, but what reality tells us is that it's the militarists that win pretty much all the time like, the closest we've got to a Sum of All Fears scenario where a war-triggering strike is prevented at the last minute is Tucker Carlson calling up Donald Trump to tell him to stop the retaliation for Iran taking out a drone, and Trump not only listens, he cites the principle of a proportional response in doing so.

Ultimately either the country splits up or less likely Arat Kilo learns to not rule by the gun. Frosted Flake posted:I really should read up on this, it sounds interesting. That’s very religiously chauvinistic of you, but that would be the Tigray-Tigrinya, before they split. also 1. John was basses on a Nestorian Mongol king, 2. Axum only controlled Yemen for like 5 years before Abraha rebelled and set up an independent kingdom 3. They never Christianized Arabia. PawParole has issued a correction as of 06:21 on Aug 8, 2023 |
