Like I said, the last time the Americans let us build under licence before destroying our aviation industry. e: the joke is that they're stacked up in front of the glass doors btw.

This might just be some blogger, i dunno, but it has some details on the CF-116 specifically. https://www.silverhawkauthor.com/post/canadian-warplanes-6-jets-canadair-cf-116-freedom-fighter The Arrow's big problem, aside from people becoming enamored with missiles, is that it was arriving just slightly late to the interceptor need while also being expensive. If it had been earlier or cheaper, maybe the UK would have bit on the arrow instead of pursuing their own domestic designs.

http://www.joebaugher.com/usaf_fighters/f5_21.htmlquote:In the 1960s, Canada unilaterally gave up its nuclear capability, and cut down its European presence to only three Starfighter squadrons. Because of fiscal restraints, the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) had been unable to procure CF-104 Starfighters and CF-101 Voodoos in sufficient numbers to replace all the Avro CF-100s and Canadair Sabres in service, and the RCAF had a need for a more affordable supersonic fighter.

The CF-5 occupies an odd space of being an improvement on the F-5A's late 1950s origin and 1960s fielding, but inferior to the F-5E (1972), which makes sense given the CF-5 was a late 60s design. By the time of the F-5E, the engines were more powerful still than CF-5s, the nose strut was standard, the engine louvres were standard, etc. And the CF-5 had some kind of questionable cost savings over the F-5E, like simply having no radar at all. The radar on the F-5E isn't amazing, but it provided gun solution as well as assisting with locating targets, providing lead to heatseeking missiles, and providing the operator with a good idea of whether or not the heat-seeking missiles were in proper range. Once you have a hard lock with an F-5E, the radar display guides the operator to achieve a boresight lock to enable heatseeking lock, even if picking up the target visually is challenging. And while the F-5E radar isn't excellentt for finding fighter sized targets at range, it can spot stuff like bombers at plenty of range to let a pilot plan an intercept and attack plan. Also lacked some of the leading edge flap design that is in the F-5E, though Canada fixed that in the 1980s. So where the F-5E is still a daytime fighter, it possesses significantly more ability to get itself on target rather than relying entirely on GCI plus eyeballs.

Does US MIC still let client states built their own version of the weapon and assign a different name? Like the Japanese version of F16 and Black Hawk? Also something super hilarious, N Korean just announced their clone version of Reaper and Global Hawk. They look exactly like the US versions. The Juche MQ9 is call "Morning Star 9", the Juche RQ4 is called "Morning Star 4".

You remember that scene in Idiocracy where the main character looks out the window of the doctor office, realised he was in the future and saw cars unthinkingly drive off a broken overpass, onto a giant pile of other crashed cars that formed a small mountain? It's that but NATO tanks.

Well the Leopard 1 was developed as a MBT so yeah I don't think you can get out of that one. I guess they could use it more for infantry support but it is probably going to be put in much of the same position as the other tanks.
