The AC/10 and the PPC have the same range in AS? The gently caress? You can wander around with an AC/10 and shoot people who are 20 hexes out?

No, but there are Urbies with PPCs. There are Urbies with anything under the loving sun, at this point.

For anyone who is unfamiliar: range in Alpha Strike are divided into Short/Medium/Long, they're the same ranges for everything (within 6", within 24", within 42"), and you either do damage in a given bracket or you don't. AC/10s do damage in short/medium, PPCs do damage in short/medium/long. Roughly speaking, if a weapon only does damage at 1-3 hexes it only has short range damage, up to 15 hexes is medium range damage, and 16+ is long range damage. I'm kind of fuzzy on whether it's actually 16+ or if it's 18+ but I also can't think of any guns with a 16 or 17 hex long range in the first place off the top of my head.

The Urbanmech UM-R63 and UM-R69 both do long range damage in AS.

Yeah the big thing here is just that Alpha Strike is a very different game. I can't remember all the composition rules (was going to do that on Tuesday), but I think I can just take a bunch of Inner Sphere mechs and probably be ok. Having recently played a lot of MW5 (and having been a 2013 MWO oldvet) I'm of the opinion that the CGL mini aesthetic, while sharing some design language with PGI (Alex Iglasias) designs, is distinctly different.

A whole bunch of artists stepped in for Brent Evans's CGL art team to provide the basic concepts for minis, including folks like David White who hit some home runs for MechWarrior 4 a couple of decades ago. Though I think Anthony Scroggins does a lot of it?

The fact that players are reading the designs as a single aesthetic is a testament to how well the art direction has gone, while PGI's designs have been hit-and-miss despite being directed a different way altogether.

e: oh wait does Scroggins lead the art team now?

Scroggins does a lot of it, but if you look hard enough a couple artists have styles that somehow manage to be distinct still within the larger new design aesthetic. Scroggins' patreon is probably a pretty good indicator of the ones he's worked on personally, for anyone curious.

Sidesaddle Cavalry posted:

Brent Evans is still the art director as of like three days ago when he was doing "What's up with Catalyst" stuff at Gencon. Whether there's a separate "art team" that Scroggins heads within that organization I haven't the faintest clue.

Do any Battletech experts here know if there would be a major change in size and shape between the regular Blackjack and the Omni version, or how you'd convert a model for one to the other? The BJ2-O looks really similar on Sarna (although the art styles of the images used are a little bit different), but it's 5 tons heavier and carries a lot more gun.

The Omni version is only 5 tons more, so while BT now does all their mech (re)designs in digital renders first and makes sure that scale is consistent as weight climbs, the difference between 5 tons means that whenever an official model of the Omni appears it's not going to be much bigger than the original.

Formally, Brent is the Catalyst art director, while Anthony is the BT art director. However, in practice BT art redesigns are hashed out via a committee of Brent, Anthony, Ray, and Randall (along with the artist who is assigned to do the work on any given design, who might be Anthony but is sometimes a freelancer).

Scroggins is mostly in charge of the redesigns of older mechs while another team handles the new Ilclan era mechs.

I think then an arm swap and bulking out the torso/shoulders/lower legs with some plasticard might be enough to differentiate it properly then, just give the sense it's a bulkier unit. Otherwise just making sure it's clearly distinctly armed as something the 45-ton version can't have will do.

I think the starter boxes has 50ish ton mechs for a reason. Tough enough that a random leg shot won’t end the battle, but light enough that it doesn’t drag on. More than one weapon system but not so many that you’re confused of what you’re supposed to do.

One thing I sincerely like about BT is that I won't have to learn how to play it again every few years. As a busy adult it's obnoxious to have to deal with the rules changing every few times I have to play, and the units "rebalanced" withlut a proper edition change before I even finish learning what they all do.

Not a lot of games keep standards half as well.

3/4 is where the game does start to shine.

Without Pulse weapons, 4/5 pilots often have to Walk or Not Move just to get that magic 7 to-hit, given a medium 'Mech's usual movement mod of +2 or +3.

And that's even if their weapons are in Short range and there's no intervening Woods in the way. It gets much worse if the weapons can't even make it to the +0 bracket in the first place.

Just 1 lower Gunnery (or a Targeting Computer, or AES in arms) allows a 'Mech to make the most of their ground speed and get the same chances to hit, if not easier due to better positioning.

Having your cake and eating it too in regards to moving and shooting in the same turn is part of the reason why Clan unit loadouts need to be balanced they way they are--3/4 pilots/crews are often assumed, and the machines don't have to pick between firepower and maneuverability.

Pulses definitely help out a ton, and a gunnery 3 pilot with pulses feels like aimbot (I can only imagine for clanners). I was also fortunate enough to have the Thunderbolt with the targeting computer, who managed to trade equally with a Warhammer for several turns and mutually destroy each other in the end.

May end up writing down the piloting/gunnery change BVs on my record sheets... lot of work but easier to use on the fly than printing whole new sheets or running it all off MUL.

Another match with the same four mechs on Sunday - this one was just a practice round. BLR-4S (3/4), SDR-8M (3/5), WVR-9M (3/4), TDR-10SE (3/5). Still learning the new tech as a normally 3025 player, but I'm sure it'll go fine. No idea what the other guy is bringing, or even if it's IS or Clan, so this ought to be an interesting surprise.
